Venus 40
I just purchased a GP. Venus40. I am considering using an OS704cycle for power. I fly off a grass field and was wondering about prop clearance? Is the stock landing gear strong enough to support the additional weight of the 4 stroke? And should the engine be installed inverted? Any information would be helpful.
Thanks, wingsnh. |
venus 40m w/4stroke
a clubmember of mine is currently running a Venus 40 with an 80 size 40stroke. I don't know which brand. He hasn't had any probs. Hope this helps. I wuold think you could do it.

You will be very happy with this plane an the os 70!
12*8 is also a good prop! |

I agree os70 4-s 12x8

I'm curious, why not a 13x6 with a .70 four-stroke?
I have a Venus almost ready to go (after how many months! :)) with a Saito .72. The manual (well, the box actually) says to go with a 13x6 if using a four-stroke. I know that the 12x8 will give more speed, but I always have "heard" that a 13x6 is the "right prop" for a .70-size four-stroke... |

The right prop for doing what? There is no right prop for a certain size motor! It all depends on what you want out of the motor! As long as you stay with in the max RPMS any prop could be the best for what you want! rickC2009 |
Why a 12x8
Wih 2 strokes I tend to use 5 or 6 pitch props because I have a wide range of rpm's I can run them at.
With 4 strokes I pretty much limit the motors at 10,000 rpm so I tend to run 8 and 9 pitch props to grab more air at the lower rpm's. Just my $.02 There is no reason you can't run a 13x6. To me a Venus looks like a pattern plane and pattern planes usually fly at higher speeds. It comes down to a matter of personal preference. Run what works best for you and the plane. Enjoy your Venus. Tom :D :D |

I think you will find the landing gear is weak pretty quick, especially for grass.

Thanks for the replys on props, guys. Not a big deal, I was just curious...
One more question: I finished everything up this weekend, and finally got to balancing. Ugh! It needs the battery ("standard" 4x600mAh) over halfway to the tail to balance! I am seriously considering chopping open an "access panel" in the bottom of the fuse for the battery (just so I don't have to add weight). Anybody else have this problem? (Again, I have a Saito .72 in the nose, but I thought that it weighs about the same as a .46FX?). The only "non-standard" thing I did was to use an HS-81 for the throttle servo (mounted in the throttle-servo slot). Standard JR's everywhere else. As for the landing gear, I agree that it looks pretty flimsy. Anybody found a good replacement? |

I had the same CG problem with an OS 61.
I replaced my gear with the same gear that cames with Sig SE, works for me. |

Robert,
You may want to mount the engine back about 3/8 inch if you can and not hit the carb. Cowl will go back that much and mount better. Saito 72 and OS 46 FX or 50 SX weight about the same. Surprised that you are having to move weight that far back. Helped with one the other day that has a Saito 65 (brick) in the nose and the battery did have to go behind the servo's to balance. Sure you are measuring the cg in the right place. The landing gear looks light, but he plane lands lighter. Ed M. |

Unfortunately, I have already mounted the cowl. Moving the engine back might be possible (not much, though) but I have already spent so much time carving the cowl (for the Saito, remote-glow and fuel dot). I would hate to have to fill those holes, re-paint, and then do it all again!
Would moving the engine back 1/4 - 1/2 inch really make that much difference? Seems easier at this point just to locate the battery back (way back!) in the fuselage. Anybody know the location of the formers? |

The gear is not weak. It looks weak but it's not. How do I know? Well I pancaked mine in from about 3 feet high when it stalled during a high wind deadstick into the weeds. The gear block ripped out but the actual aluminum was hardly bent at all. Don't worry about replacing it.
As for the CG issue, mine came out noseheavy as well with a Saito 72 and AAA 720nimh/RX just infront of the servo tray. I used Hitec 225s instead of standards. I will move the battery just behind the servos soon. The plane flies awesome and is plenty fast with an APC 13x6, plus you cant beat the rocket like climb rate with this prop. Filip |
