Recently finished and flown this plane and thought I'd share my thoughts on it.I would say this is by far the nicest building and flying arf I've had in a very long time. The plane came with very nice accesories(spelled wrong). Some of these included actual rubber wheels! The tailwheel unit is top notch(Klett). The covering job on this plane is flawless,I admit I could not do better myself. This is one very easy to fly,but also very aerobatic plane.I would highly recommend one if you've been thinking of getting it.

DECATHALON

Been looking at this kit, noticed there is not a stated fuse length anywhere in their ad's, or in any of the current forum's, could you please provide this ? .

my father has a dynaflight decathalon, that is very close in size and we just wanted to compare the two size wise .

will a saito 91 fit intirely inside the cowl ?, if so i will likely get the kit ( goldberg arf ) .

regards , scott

very cool, i take it thats from tip of spinner to tip of rudder ?
one more question, is the wing flat bottom or symetrical or semi ?

regards, scott

Thats spinner to tail, and its a semi symetrical wing

I've been looking at this kit along with the H-9 Taylorcraft. I may just buy them both if I can do some convincing of the wife. I am curious as to the engine size vs. performance. I would like a little authority for some vertical. Is the Saito .91 enough or can I get away with less?

go for the saito 100....it is same weight with more kick,...

Goldberg Decathlon

A great kit with quality accessories. A well engineered ARF with attention to detail.

One suggestion is to use 4/40 blind nuts to attach the cowl. Another is to re-solder the tail bracing wires at the bend in the tab. This area has been cleaned up with a file and is definately a weak point and will fatigue and break in a short time.

A Saito 91 will fly it very well. I am using the new Saito 100 and it is a power house. It is not a bored out 91 but an entirely new engine. Seems to be a fuel miser also.

Tracks straight as an arrow on take-off and lands the same way.
Definately a keeper.

hi jim,

i to have been looking into one of these decathalons for a play plane inbetween jet flying, but i think at a street price of 40.00 shy of the new great planes 1/3 scale pitts, i will likly go with the pitts, kind of too bad though as i really like the decathalon.

i think it's a shame that goldberg allways over price thier kits, as they have great kits but other manufactures offer a better bang for the buck for a similar plane .

for instance, take the great planes cub arf, almost identical measurements, and likley similar proformance, and it costs 170.00 LESS,

jim, hope to see you at tucson jet rally, and i will be bringing a saito 180 powered yellow a/c cap 232 arf plane to fly after 5:00 .

see ya there, regards, scott

Is the new pitts only going to be $340?I paid $299 for mine from my hobby shop, didnt think it was that bad of a price. Now the sig somethin extra arf at $199,thats a little steep.

SKYPILOT 12-26-2001 06:45 PM

pricing

thats closer, in truth, i had not seen any street ( shop ) prices on the decathalon, so i only had the 359.00 price point they list it for, so the 299.00 you quoted is deffinitly better, but i feel still not worth 110.00 more than the cub .

the 399.00 i quoted refures to the price point for the 1/3 scale great planes pitts .

merry xmas. everyone !

Well,I've got a h9 cub with almost the same identical measurements as the GP cub and can tell you these do not have the same performance, the decathalon is a very aerobatic plane compared to the cub,the wing loading on these planes is quite different.

Does this make the decath hardedr to fly...My little 54 in w/s cub can be a handful at times...I want a good ground track, and slow easy landings...

Thanks...5

I can just say this, the biggest difference is the responsivness of the controls in these two airplanes. The decathalon lands very slowly and is very steady, but also gets up and goes. The cub lands very, very, very slowly and is very, very, very steady, but doesnt really perform when it comes to acro, unless you clip the wings then you do have two very similiar airplanes.I think as long as its not yourfirst airplane, either one would make a great second airplane. Both are tons of fun to play with.

Hi FiveSquare!

>>I want a good ground track, and slow easy landings... I just do not want another cub...<<

I'm looking for the same for my daughter... I'm going with the new Hangar-9 T-Craft...

JBH,Fivesquare I dont know if you read in my other post but I've also got a T-craft for christmas I'm now just waiting for the engine, hopefully it gets here today and I can get it in the air for the weekend and do a little comparison for ya.I've got admit, that although I absolutly love my decathalong, for 70 bucks more the T-craft is a much bigger airplane since it is clipped wing.I figure if it wasnt a clipped wing adding 10 -12 inches to each wing panel would give you the standard size which makes for a big airplane.

What engine are you going with KAJ?

For gas I'd go ZDZ-40, BME-50, or Taurus 3.2. I might even go glow (Saito 1.80 or OS 1.60).

Well, since I was surprised by this one for christmas and hadnt really put aside any finances for it ,I'm going to have to go cheap for now.I'm going to try a 1.20 2 stroke for power and see how it goes,I would rather have this plane fly closer to scale then see a Taylor craft hovering, but thats just me,lol. But on the other hand this thing is supposed to be capable of 3D type manuevers,we'll have to see.

excellent,I've got an os 91II pumped in mine and it flies really well, matter of fact, for some reason this plane does some of the best tailslides I've ever seen.

I got my Decathlon out yesterday for the second time this year. I have a Magnum .91 on it. It has plenty of power. I love it. What a beautiful plane. Here are more pictures.
