Ultra Stick build-a-long

I Know there are millions of threads on the ultra Stick 60 so instead of asking for everybodies advice I'm going to put up some pictures of the assembly process for all the experts to make sure I didn't screw up. I decided against doing every single little mod there is for the plane b/c I would like to keep it simple since its only my second plane. I Have a .61 FX going into this one and I'm going to be purchasing a new radio very soon for this plane. I plan to mostly fly sport and maybe a little 3d but like just profile not too advanced. I really liked the 7CAP but I Found the 6EXA for $90.00 @ Bruckner hobbies and I think this will last me a good long while for my kind of flying. Also I need to know what size tank the US 60 has. I noticed that a dubro tank will most likely not work because the have that little flange sticking out the front and then the stopper won't get through the hole in the firewall. I was looking at the Sullivan flex tank, becasue I measured the hole to go in the fusealge and most won't fit. I don't think i really want to cut a hatch. If its easy emough to do I woulld like to mount the servos in the rear. I'm also ordering a a sullivan tailwheel. I have already used the stock CA hinges and wing dowels which I will monitor closely. I also put some extra Epoxy on the rear wing hold down the LG Block and i need to find a way to put somee E-Poxy around the firewall.
I'll load the pictures later when I have a chance but thanks for looking and sorry for the long post.

Check out my Ultra Stick Lite build for some tips. On the tank, the stopper doesn't have to come through the firewall just run a little longer line. Also I know the Usl 1.20 has a 22 oz. tank. so the 60 must be around...... 12-16 oz. maybe?

RE: Ultra Stick build-a-long

Lol I wish my dad would install hinges for me.. Worst part of the whole assembly.

Thinking ahead, Have you worked out how to make the tailwheel steerable? What I did (Sullivan unit like yours):

1.) I made an ,aircraft ply, mounting plate the extends about 2-3cm out from each side of the tailwheel mount. then epoxied it to the horizontal stab so that the brass piece on the tailwheel cleared the elevator.

2.) Mark and drill your holes and temporarily mount the tailwheel bracket. Measure the distance from the hole in the top of the brass piece(On tailwheel) to the elevator.

3.) Cut a slot in the fuse/stab to line up with the tailwheel. Make it pretty big so that a 2-56 wire has plenty of room

4.) Take tailwheel off and insert a long (12" or more) piece of 2-56 wire into the top of the brass piece, and put a LOT of solder on it.

5.) Now bend the wire 90 degrees lining up with the actual taiwheel so that the wire points STRAIGHT back. If you don't get it straight the plane won't go straight with out rudder correction.

6.) Now looking at the BOTTOM of the plane, set the tail wheel assy. in place and eyeball where the wire goes over the slot you cut earlier. Make a 90 degree bend so that it goes through that slot.

7.) Now with the tailwheel set in place the wire should stick straight up(with plane on its wheels).

8.) Now make your final 90 degree bend so that the wire runs along the bottom of the rudder.

9.) Now slide a thin piece of tubing over the rudder, fill the tubing with somthing (we used fuel tubing) so that it fits snugly over the 2-56 rod.

10.) Finally, bend a small scrap piece of 2-56 or 4-40 rod into a tight "U" shape so that it fits snuggly over the brass tubing. Now mark where u want the "U" to enter the rudder and drill two SMALL pilot holes, then just insert the "U" and coat with Ca or Epoxy.

Total time: 1 hour.

Thnaks alot ICE haven't gave it much thought. Your instructions seem pretty clear but i bet they'll sound even more clear once I'm holding all of it in my hand.

RE: Ultra Stick build-a-long

It's a really easy task, and yes it'll be easier once you have it in your hand. Also have you bought the 61 FX yet?

ICE_MAN 01-17-2005 06:44 PM

RE: Ultra Stick build-a-long

The reason I ask is because, if you haven't already bought it then go with a super tigre engine. I like them much better than O.S. They run/start like clockwork. Also they have plenty of torque and power. You could go with the St .75 or .90. If you do be sure and order a Bisson pitts muffler for it.

fasterthanlife 01-17-2005 07:38 PM

RE: Ultra Stick build-a-long

Sorry ICE. The engine has been bought for close to 2 months reason being is that it was going on a Four Star 60 that was meant to be a Docile sport flyer b/c my dad liked it ( He was funding it):D so ya know whatever HE wants. then the 4*'s got backordered for something like 4 motnhs so I canceled it and ordered up the US.

Plus everyone on here sais that they love the ST's but you have to tune them and my dads the kind of guy that beileives in paying for something that is proven and reliable and easy to tune so The 91 FX was too much so we got the .61 FX.

Ya never know I might get a twist later on and since there supposedly tail heavy then I'll slap on the .61 which everyone sais is great for balancing and extreme power then step up the engine on the US 60 since I can handle the price of just an engine but not the price of an engine and airframe + electronics. .

Anyways my dads going on a hunting trip (wasn't invited:eek:) and I'm own my own this week, kinda would like to have it up for next weekend b/c my flying buddy is gonna maiden his .91 FX Corsair TF kit (yea I know a 2 banger on a warbird[&o]) but the kit took some while so this should be intresting.

I really need to decide on a tank for this bird so I can make the order. So far the order has receiver/battery latex foam to wrap them up. An Inline fuel filter. a ______ tank Sullivan tail unit. and an exhaust deflector. Anything else I should include in this order? I'm also hoping to purchase either a 6EXA or a 7CAP I have the money to get either one but I'm wondering if I should get the 6EXA and out the $60 towards an engine for my trainer so I can kick out the LA.
what do yall think?

wow you just start typing and woa now I'm already all the way down here.
Thanks for looking

Oh yeah and what prop? I got an APC like an 12x4 or something what would you reccomend. also what size spinner? Might just go with a Du-Bro propnut. Also I'll probally just go with the stock motor mount because I really don't want to drill new eholes. ETC.

ICE_MAN 01-17-2005 09:04 PM

RE: Ultra Stick build-a-long

Hey,
The St Engines are great.. You have to tune every engine, but in my experience the ST's have been the easiest.

Go with a harry Higly prop nut.. Tower should have them in stock.

I'm not sure on the prop but my 51 turns an APC 11x6 so your 61 would definatly turn a 12x4. I'd probably try a 13x4-5.

Did the ARF not come with a fuel tank? If not, to get an Idea of flight times(I don't know how long you like to fly) My buddies O.S. 91 Four Stroke runs about 5 minutes on 12 oz. of fuel.. The O.S.'s tend to chug the fuel. In comparison my ST 51 runs 44 min. on 8 oz. So I'd say for 10-15 minute flights a 12 or 14 oz. tank would be good. The tank compartment (At leat in the 1.20) Is big and should acomodate the 12 oz. tank.

I have the Futaba 6EXA radio and its a good one. Easy to program, reliable, cheap. The S3004 servo's that come with it are excellent and I'm using them for ailerons and throttle on my USL 1.20. The reciever is seven channels which opens several doors for diffrent mixes ect.

I don't know if you plan to continue flying your trainer or not but with the extra $60 you save on the 6EXA you can sendd to me! Lol only kidding.. Seriously you should look at the Bisson pttis mufflers. They're light and really sound good. Plus No more goo on the side of your plane. Also if you stay with the stock muffler DON'T get the exhaust deflector! People around here have experience 12-15% Power loss! Get the Bisson and solve the problem, lose weight, and sound better!

Good luck on your maiden! Next weekend you say? Well then that makes two Ultra Sticks! I hope to get mine up, but the ST only has 120 oz. of fuel though it! I'm hoping it'll be broken in by the weekend! Good luck to your buddy on his maiden too! Oh and good luck to your dad hunting! What's he hunting for again? Regards, Cody

Me and my dad hunt ducks.

Well I made the order and the .12 oz was the biggest that would fit without a hatch.

Heres a list of what I got~

Sullivan Tailwheel Bracket 40-60 5-12 lbs.
Dubro In-Line Fuel Filter Blue
Hobbico Latex Foam Rubber 1/4"
Great Planes ElectriFly Futaba Tx Charge Adapter
Great Planes ElectriFly Male Univ Conn Charge Adptr
Dubro Spinner Prop Nut 5/16-24
O.S. #8 Glow Plug Standard Long Medium Hot
Dubro S12 Square Fuel Tank 12 oz.

Tommorow night I will hopefully order either a 6EXA or a &CAP
leaning towards the 6EXA.

Thanks

Get the 7 CAP radio. In the long run you will be glad that you did. I have gone through several different computer radio's and I finally got me a 9 CAP. This is the best radio I have ever had. The futaba CAP radio's are very easy to use and program and have many more features than the older 6 channel computer radio's. You may not need all of the features right now but if you keep on flying you will need them sooner or later. My advice to you is if you have the extra money get the better radio. The super tigre's are great engines for the price. I have had several of them all the way from 40 to a 3000. I have had several of the 61 and 90 size engines. I recently had a 90 on an ultra stick 60 and it was a very good combinatiion. The 91 is only 119.00 at tower too. These engines are every bit as good as the OS 91 FX and they last a long time. I put a 16 oz sullivan tank in my plane and it fit perfectly. I just used the stock tail wheel and it works great. These planes land so slow that the landing geat doesn't take a beating. With a 91 on it the 60 size is a lot of fun to fly. I liked it so much that I am building a ultra stick lite 120 with a 3W-24 gasser on it. I am almost finished with it and should have it ready by this weekend.

In my Ultra Stick 60 I have a 15 ounce long square tank that was on the shelf at my LHS. If fits perfectly. The back end comes through into the radio compartment just a hair. I can't remember the name brand because it wasn't mainstream but the owner of the store said that it was very good quality. It's been doing great for the past 5 months. If you look and ask you will find. I'm getting around 18 minute flight times with my Saito 82.

I used a 14 oz great planes tank and cut a hatch it the top. I also used the stock tail wheel with no problems. With a year on it and over 300 flights it hasn't had any damage. I fly off of grass.

You get any more work done on the plane?

RE: Ultra Stick build-a-long

I just got back from school did homework and now I'm goin to a basketball game maybe tonight. need to fix the wing hold down plate where the screws go and put on the rudder/hinges. Hopefully the 12 oz. will be enough fuel. I would like atleast 12 minute flights if not more.

Thanks

RE: Ultra Stick build-a-long

CF,

I used the Sullivan tailwheel assembly on my US 60. I just added a piece of ply between the Sullivan base and the fuse as a spacer. Otherwise the install was per Sullivan instructions and it has performed fine. If you want to see a pic let me know.

Initially I had a Saito 100 on my US60. Awesome performance, but with the 11 oz standard fuel tank, I had 5 minutes of flight time max. I could never have any fun with the plane because I was always deadsticking in - taking the walk - and refueling. I put an OS 61 on mine and am enjoying the plane much more. I haven't checked the flight time, but I'd say it's 10 minutes plus.

Even with the OS61 I have a couple of oz of weight in the tail. I could remount the engine farther out on the mounts and eliminate some, if not all, of the extra tail weight. I suggest you drill the engine mount last.

RE: Ultra Stick build-a-long

rcJon I'm a bit confused on how mounting the engine farther out on the mounts would make it less nose heavy resulting in having to use less *dead* weight in the rear? wouldn't that just make it more nose heavy?

I'm gonna finish assembly but my order from tower won't come in till thursday or Friday.

Oh yea If I -Y- the Ailerons could I fly the US 60 with a skyport 4 radio? or is too responsive? thanks again

-CajunFlyer-

rcjon 01-19-2005 07:38 AM

RE: Ultra Stick build-a-long

Duh... you caught me in a major BF. Correct, engine farther out requires more tail weight. I should have just said adjust the engine in the mounts.

Yes you can fly the US with the 4 channel radio using a Y connector.

I understand that it is possible mechanichly for it too work. But I'm asking if its too sensitive and needs D/R , Expo. Or is that what you were talking about>?
thanks

RE: Ultra Stick build-a-long

The step in the front of the fuel tank is designed to prevent the tank from sliding up to the firewall and blocking off the fuel or vent lines. Especially when using retracts as the fuel tank butted up against the housing. Dwayne

That will depend on how you set it up. Without the benefit of a computer radio you will want to set throws conservatively. Sensitivity can also be somewhat controlled by set-up. I fly mine with very little expo and don't have any trouble, and on high rate I have the throws maxed out.

RE: Ultra Stick build-a-long

I undetsand now. I'll probally use this for the first few flights because I don't know how long radio shipment will take. Now I'm looking at the OPTIC 6 Decsisions Decsisions.... Wheres the cheapest place to buy these radios? www.servocity.com ? www.brucknerhobbies.com ?

thanks Now I'm going up to work on the plane right now.
Also when I put my wing and and tighten down the wing screws there is a slight gap between the wing and wing saddle and I heard this causes dowl burning exspeically since I used the stock dowels. Can I just use saddle tape or should I get some caulking and put wax paper on the wing and put a line of Caulk. down the saddle tighten screws and let dry overnight?

Thanks again for the help.
