Hey Suitcase, all you have to do to make the wind blow is finish a new airplane. Maybe we can fly your Big Boy tommorow afternoon if the weather is OK.

RE: jerrys big boy by morris hobbies
:DRR,
Fuel all over the bottom of the fuel tank compartment? What a novel concept! Just kidding.......... I heard something years ago that for such an instance as yours you could spray K2R spot remover in the affected area and then heat it with your heat gun. The dried out K2R would absorb the oily residue and then you could blow it all away with compressed air. Well, I was notified that K2R is now off the market. (Guess I haven't had a fuel line blow off in a long time!) I was recently told that corn starch, baking soda or self-rising flour pretty much does the same thing. You might give it a try. RE: jerrys big boy by morris hobbies
I really want to here more about the flight characteristics! I have been eyeballing this plane for a couple of months now and for some reason haven't jumped on one.
I have a Saito 100 ready to be mounted in this puppy! I have also been looking at Hitec HS-475HB Servos 76oz @ 6V. If the Quad Aileron/Flap conversion is not too difficult I would be interested in doing that. Does anyone have the length of Flap, in their Aileron Quad setup? ICE 32 ICEMAN what is the deal with this video of Jerry Smith and the Big Boy? If I buy the Video and then buy the Plane I get my money back for the Video? I see that Morris Hobbies is also selling on E*** is that the best deal going right now? |
RE: jerrys big boy by morris hobbies
thanks ice, i did use K2R. we have a store in town that hade 5 cans on the shelf. i bought them all. it seems to work great the wood look good and i think all is well. i am flying mine with a OS 91 FX with a jerry smith moose can pipe and it has unlimited vert. i am using futaba 3010's every where and 9151 on rudder. 3010's are $24.00 each 72oz @ 4.8 . i have a ultra stick 60 w/ 91FX and love it but the big boy is on the next level if you want to 3D. mine come in at 7lbs and 6 oz. give it a try you will love it.

;)Hi RCB,
Put a 15-6 or a 16-4W on your Saito 100 and use your Hitec 475's and you'll have a great combination. As I have stated before, I wasn't really excited about this bird until I got my hands on one! This thing has some great flying characteristics. It's slow and controllable when you want it to be but when you crank up the throttle on the motor you will find a plane that bores holes in the sky with the best of them. It has a roll rate more like a fun fly plane would have. It has fabulous snapping ability with a predictible recovery every time! Covering and hardware are excellent. It needs some beefing up if you are going to hang a gasser on the front end but is structually sound for four-strokes up to 1.80's or two-strokes up to 1.60. I have heard some guys like the pull-pull set up and others do not. I myself went with carbon fiber arrow shaft with Dave Brown inserts (4-40 on the back end and short 2-56 with a Z-bend on the servo arms.). I can't say that the flap set-up did anything for me or the flying characteristics. I do have the ailerons set up to work in conjunction with the elevator on my 10X radio. Since the plane is light on the sticks at slow speeds I didn't see much of a difference in the flap issue. (My flaps were split 50-50 and now reside on the work bench...... I put the original ailerons back on.) We have experienced a ton of carnage over the last few weeks with our flying click........ Really stupid stuff! Have you stepped on your JERRY'S BIG BOY wing in the dark as it was lying on the gameroom floor? Have you ever assembled the wing halves with thick C/A only to have the assemblies stick about 1 1/2 inches away from each other? (The guy uses only EPOXY now!) Has one of your best buddies had a brain glitch and dorked a JERRY'S BIG BOY full bore into the ground about 20 feet from you?? Have you threaded still another JERRY'S BIG BOY through a pine tree to check out the factory applied structual integrity of the wing? No? Yes! I haven't seen this much balsa and ply rain down on our field in forever! Oh well......... MORRIS HOBBY DIST. is knee deep in replacement kits and parts. (We love to sell 'em but it's becoming a chore listening to grown men cry over there favorite plane, ME INCLUDED!) Videos or questions about E-Bay issues? Call me at MORRIS HOBBIES and get an explanation and a great deal! (Ya gotta ask for me!) Terry SR. V.P. SALES MORRIS HOBBIES DIST. |
RE: jerrys big boy by morris hobbies
Hello Mr. Ice, ordered Boy on Tuesday, received Boy on Thursday, or at least it's at our office. I'm still stuck in St. Croix, finishing an Airport Project. I spoke with you when I ordered. One quick question, I'm installing the First Place 1.3 gasser, weighs about 45 ounces with Muffler. Will I need to install the elev/rudder servo's at the rear of the plane? I'm very anxious to get back & build and fly the Boy.
|
RE: jerrys big boy by morris hobbies
Suitcase used a G-26 on his and to balance he put the rudder servo Hitec 645MG and the battery in the tail. Needed 1 1/2 oz of lead to balance.
|
RE: jerrys big boy by morris hobbies
The G26 is a lot heavier, about 56 ounces with the Muffler, I think. That's about a pound more than my motor. What do you think ICE?
|
RE: jerrys big boy by morris hobbies
Have you used your FPE 1.3 before? One of the guys at our club had one on a Ryan's Rebel and it was a real dog. Another Rebel had an old ratty looking G-23 and it ran circles around it. I love the FPE 2.4 but the 1.3 didn't look like much.
|
RE: jerrys big boy by morris hobbies
KD,
The only G-26 I've seen had electronic ignition and therefore was lighter. He had the rudder and elevator servos in the tail and the battery was at the rear of the radio compartment. (at the trailing edge of the wing) With your FPE motor, I would suspect that moving the battery to suit and mounting the servos in the tail will more than likely be just the ticket. You need to hurry and finish the JBB and take it to the island with you to make your after work time more bearable........Did I just say that?? You're on an island more than likely in eyeshot of bikini-clad babes and sand and surf. All you need now is the plane and I'm coming to fly with you!! Terry[8D] |

Here are some weights of a G26.
The first pic is a stock G26 with factory muffler, 59.1oz The second picture is same motor after convertion, with Abell muffler and ign. battery. 51.5oz Ron |
RE: jerrys big boy by morris hobbies
Thanks Ice, I would prefer to place the Ail/Rudder servo's in the back anyway. You're right, lots of bikini clad babes, but none of them will have anything to do with me, unless I flash big bucks. I'd rather spend that money on planes (did I just say that!!). Mr. RVator I know you meant well, but have you seen enough of these motors to submit that harsh of a judgement? The first place motor is a little smaller than the G-26/G23. It's also nearly a pound lighter than a G26 with an electronic ignition, more than a pound lighter than a regular G26. I'm getting this motor at a very good price (225$ with muffler & ignition) and based on my research, it should fly the Boy just fine. I also like the compact size of the FP motor although I would never pay more than 400 bucks for a new one. I'm just looking for an aggressive sport flyer, not a 3D hover machine. I love the G23/26, I have a G23 on a Hanger 9 1/4 scale Super Cub and it flys that plane just fine.

Here's mine. It's running in the photos. I've only had the chance to fly it once but I'm sure it will hover with no problem. I'm using a 17X6 APC prop with the supplied spinner. Also notice the ply engine mount. It weighs half what the aluminum plate weighs.
|
RE: jerrys big boy by morris hobbies
I just wanted to give my experience with the 1.3. The guy that had it is our club's gas engine guru and he sure didn't like it. For the price you stated it would be great and fly the Big Boy fine. It flys great and you will love the plane. I just wanted to tell you if you were spending full price on a new to check it out first.

RE: jerrys big boy by morris hobbies
Thanks RV, I run into a lot of guys that must have the biggest, baddest, fastest, hoveringest plane around. That's OK, but sometimes they insist thats what I want as well. I have couple of planes that hover easily (although I'm still perfecting that manuver). I also have planes with a 1 to 1 power to weight ratio or less and I have just as much fun flying those, depends on my mood. The 1.3 FP was on a friends plane that weighed about 12 pounds (an extra I think). It flew that plane alright, but wouldn't hover it. It has only a couple flights on it and comes with a brand new ignition(still in the box). This motor has an advertised static thrust of 10 pounds. I feel like I can build the Boy and keep it around 9 to 10 pounds. I'm looking forward to building and flying this plane.

RE: jerrys big boy by morris hobbies
Ok I need another plane! I have/had a Hanger 9 Twist until this weekend. I really liked this plane and for $100 I am considering another one. I would however consider the Big Boy in its place.
One concern that I have is how to transport an 80” wing! I am sure I will figure it out if need be. I want to know if the Big Boy has any known WEAK POINTS. Coupling issues, weak airframe? How long does this normally take to assemble? |
RE: jerrys big boy by morris hobbies
hi rcbozo, i have a big boy and it's the best all around plane i have. so far i have not found any weak spots but i did pin the firewall and beef up the landing gear area . this is a good idea on any arf. i also set up a mix in my radio for knife edge flight it didnt take much but it makes it fly straight on KE . give it a try i think you will love it. also a 80 inch wing is a pain to haul but it's worth it. just my 2 cents.
good luck randy |
RE: jerrys big boy by morris hobbies
Rcbozo I'm gonna bump this thread back to the front page. I've got several flights on my BB with the G26 and the plane flys very well. I haven't put flying wires on the tail as suggested so I don't do any fast stuff. My G26 isn't running up to snuff right now for some reason. I noticed a short crack in the carb insulator. It doesn't run all the way to the engine body but it still may be sucking air. I need to do the carb side plate mod to run the tube inside the fuse also.
RCBOZO, you live in Ohio, where abouts? You see the post above from Forestrokeron? He lives in Iowa but has family down here in VA where I live. Well, he came for a visit last week and brought a couple planes and we got to fly together which was very cool. The net ain't all bad! So anyway I used to live in Ohio, where do you live? |
RE: jerrys big boy by morris hobbies
suitcase I live in northwest Ohio. Napoleon - about 35 miles west of Toledo. I am pretty lucky; I have quite a good bunch of guys that I fly with.
I smacked my Hanger 9 Twist in half on Memorial Day and I though that I was going to get some sympathy from the wife and get a new plane but one of the "Great Guys” at our club told her that it was an easy fix maybe 2 hours or so. Well he was right but I would have sacrificed the Twist to be able to try the Big Boy! |
RE: jerrys big boy by morris hobbies
Thats funny! Not the crash, the way your wife did. I must say my wife is my biggest supporter. After each crash she tells me to keep on keeping on, the learning curve thing and all. She's great.
I lived in southern Ohio, near the Indiana line out of Cinci. Harrison, Oh. I still have family there and they used to farm but turned it into a golf course. Circling Hills Golf Course. Would make a neat flying field.lol ORIGINAL: RCBOZO suitcase I live in northwest Ohio. Napoleon - about 35 miles west of Toledo. I am pretty lucky; I have quite a good bunch of guys that I fly with. RE: jerrys big boy by morris hobbies
Thought I'd revive an old thread. Got my plane today. Talk about an excellent quality ARF. THis is my first ARF, and I can say it's a lot better than anything I could build. Even got some free stuff with it. A set of wheel pants and an extra ounce of thin CA. Was missing the gas conversion stopper, but I guess that's a good tradeoff:) Terry, let me know if I owe you guys for the wheel pants and CA. Overall, I'm incredibly pleased with the airplane so far. Nothing at all that I could see a problem with, and I've been accused of being a perfectionist:) Hopefully it flies like everyone describes it to. I'm sure it will. Gonna power it with a 25 cc weedeater engine conversion with an ignition of my own design. Perhaps there will be some more news on my ignition if things go well. Like there needs to be another ignition system on the market:) Anyways, mark me down as an incredibly pleased customer so far, and I'll check in with a flight report after I get it in the air.

RE: jerrys big boy by morris hobbies
Hi Dan. You'll love the BB I promise. If your engine has enough power. The plane doesn't weigh as much as it looks like it would. I've landed in the tall grass three times already due to engine problems and all it did was bend the gear a little. I absolutly love flying this thing and wish I could get my engine problems worked out. You won't need any flaps believe me. This plane lands as slow as you could want. With the G26 I mounted the rudder servo in the rear and still had to add 1 1/2 oz weight but the G26 doesn't even notice. If I could just keep it running,,,,,, that would be great. If I can help let me know.

RE: jerrys big boy by morris hobbies
How does the BB handle flying at full throttle with say an OS 1.20 4 Stroke. I like 3D planes, but I also like a plane that will groove while carrying a bit of speed. In 3D I always worry about flutter, in situations like this. I don't want to Pylon Race it, but I would like to be able to do some fairly high speed passes.
|
RE: jerrys big boy by morris hobbies
When I was considering the plane, I did alot of reading and it seems very many guys fly it with the 91fs. I believe the 120 would be a beast on it. I did glass the firewall inside and also the landing gear area inside the fuse. I haven't had a bit of trouble with the landings in high grass. It always has hung and flipped over on it's rudder. Only once it bent the left gear out a little. My engine problems are solved and it's flying great again. This thing lands very slow with no tendency to drop a wing. I love it.

RE: jerrys big boy by morris hobbies
RC Combat - the kit version allows 2 different sized ailerons to be built. Not sure which size came with the ARF. The larger ones, as I built on my kit version. are 4" wide and fullspan. This is DEFINITELY NOT a speed plane. It's a funfly/3D plane and a terrific gentle sport plane when you want low stress flying. However, even with the stock 2 servos per aileron half, it has a 3" thick wing and huge ailerons. I believe you would be asking for trouble to attempt to prop it for speed. Flutter would become fairly likely, even with strong servos, as the ailerons are stick-built like a funfly craft. That's one reason it's so light.
