WM Midget Mustang. What engine?
 

Who has a World Models Midget Mustang? What engine do you have on it and do you like it? What engine do you wish you had on it?
I Liked the looks of this plane ever since I first seen one so I finely broke down and bought one "Yellow" and ups just dropped it off at my front door.
The manual says 60 2 stroke or 90 4 stroke. Sounds a little small to me. I normally take what they say and add 10 then multiply by 4, If you know what I mean! :D
By the looks of the model I'd say at least a 90 2 stroke or a 120 4 stroke.
Just looking for some Information from the people who know, Midget mustang owners!

I just got back from flying my WM Midget Mustang this evening. It is an excellent model, you will no doubt love the way it flies!

I have a Saito .91 (four-stroke) in mine and think it is the perfect engine for this plane. It has virtually unlimited vertical and is very fast. I tend to overpower models also - as long as they don't get too heavy. What ever you choose, keep it light!

The only thing I don't like about the Midget Mustang is the landing gear wire. It needs heavier wire as it will easily bend backwards upon landing and then nose-over (no matter how easy the landing is on grass). Other than that it is an outstanding model. One trick I recently discovered is the use of spoilerons on this plane really help as it tends to float forever on landing. After I am over the runway and a few feet up I deploy the spoilerons upward 10-20 degrees. The plane will settle nicely onto the runway without the float which tended to use up too much runway. I will be flying off of grass, I may bend me some heavier wire for the landing gear if it is a problem. I have an extra YS 91fz on the shelf. I might use that.

I have alot of "poop" for you so take a seat.

I have the white version for 3 years. Flown it only a handful of times. Not because it is a bad plane but white turned out to be the worse color to fly. I have several hotrods. I mounted a OS 1.08 sideways with a Pitts underneath. The original first choice was the 91FX but could had problems.
* First off I glassed the whole firewall area. You cant see it anyways with the cowl and it adds extra strength.
* Take a good look at your servo tray. Two of the slots in the back of it-One for the rudder and one for the elevator. I changed it. I cut out the wood between the two to make one big slot to hold 3 servos. The middle would be for the rudder and the outside for each elevator. I ran two elevator servos.
* I also change the landing gear (recently) I removed the struts for the wings and bought the regular aluminum type you see on trainers. Painted it white, put on the wheel pants and Kavan wheels and the entire appearence of this plane changed for the better.
* I mounted this aluminum piece to the front of the wing. I glassed it up and made a hard point for the gear to go in. I also use Nylon 1/4x20 .
The plane is sweet but a handful. I find landings should have a shallow approach or it won't slow down. I also set up the flaperon function. It is a good plane

I used a OS 91fx with a14X8 on mine and it was clocked on radar at 112mph in calm winds.

never had any problems with this plane,and I rate it as a must fly.
I had a house fire and lost mine, but it sure was always fun. :D

The OS91FX weighs the same as the OS60FX that is what I would use.

About the 91fx. I had two over a one month period and returned them. later on I found they were having problems with seals in the remote needle valve. Either way, I dont fool with it. The final solution was a OS 1.08. I have two of those engines. They are the most consistent and reliable engines around. G90 is a good engine or maybe try a Magnum Fourstroke. Whatever! See ya.

I fly mine with a 91fx and love it. I am running a 13-8 and it is pretty fast. I haven't tried propping it for speed. What would you guys suggest if I wanted to prop for speed. The only problem is it takes long enough now to bleed off speed. I replace my gear with heavier wire. It helped, but I still get noseover in grass.

Great plane though, solid as a rock in the air.

If you are on a budget the MDS .68 engine is perfect for this plane. With a 12x7 prop it is incredibly fast, reliable, and easy to run and only 99 bucks new!

Think "thrice" about an MDS. If you like the plane, get something else.

I fly mine with a GMS .76. For the price, I don't think you will find a better engine. Easy starts, great transition and powerful. More than enough to pull the MM around.

OS .91FX
 

Try the K&B remove needle valve assembly, PN 9255, $15.95 on your .91FX. Works great. No more air leaks and leaning out.

As an alternate, try the Magnum .91XLS. It is an OS clone, but ABC. Exact same bore & stroke. runs well and is strong.

I'll stand by what I say with the MDS .68. It is the best kept secret out there.

Cyclic Hardover, the changes of getting a bad running MDS .68 are much better than a irreversible valve going bad to cause an actual cyclic hardover in a heli, meaning very slim.

Cylclic H, go ahead get yourself a NIB MDS .68 for your next .60 sized airplane. Follow a couple of tips (flush out engine before first run, take the time to break in the hard chrome cylinder, never run more than 300 rpm shy of max lean rpm, use 10% nitro for first couple of gallons, use an OS 8 or idle bar plug) and you'll be extremely happy or I'll buy the engine off of you. I don't work for Horizon (the MDS distributor), just a satisfied customer who'll put his money where his mouth is.
