Is Magic Extra a flat bottom wing like the Magic
I have a Magic and the wing has an almost flat bottom which makes it lousy at outside maneuvers. Yes, it does basic outside stuff fine and flies inverted great; but during those stalled or near stalled outside maneuvers (ex a waterfall) my Magic drops a wing real bad.
Does the Magic Extra have the same airfoil or is it fully symmetrical?? I want one as long as it is not just a low wing Magic. :) Anyone out there have one yet?? |

Yeah, it's the same wing type

I just hope it rolls and loops like the old magic. As a beginner, that fat (slow) wing should help me out when it's time to land. Rich<> Update: They are coming! Middle of next month. :( |
Magic Extra
Saw the ME at the RCHTA show. Wing is the same as the Magic, but is shortened a few inches. Fuselage and tail is very different than the Magic. Overall the plane appears very similar to the Somethin' Extra but is 40% less expensive ($119 vs $199).
Looking at the wing and the wing saddle cutout shape, my Magic wing is clearly not flat bottomed. It's either semi-symmetrical, or nearly symmetrical. Mine does Waterfalls easily, as well as knife edge spins (without losing altitude). |

After taking a closer look at my Magic's wing it is definately semi-symmetrical. The wing and low weight does make it a real floater which can be fun in a breeze. I tried some more tight outside loops the other day and my Magic just drops a wing and falls out of the loop (stalled). For $120 it is really tempting to try one :)

geoharry, try mixing in some flaperons on your outside maneuvers and waterfalls. Mine will waterfall within a fuse length with flaperons enabled (max aileron throw with max elevator).

I assume you mean down aileron with up elvator and up aileron with down elevator. I already have it mixed but haven't tried it on the outside stuff. Next time out I will give it a try. As for the waterfalls how are you doing them. Would you describe your method. Thanks. |

Thats exactly what I mean geoharry. I go into them a couple of ways. Easiest is to pull straight vertical, throttle back while hitting the high rate and flaperon switches. Just as the plane begins to slow to a stop (or from a hover), I apply full down elevator, and bang the throttle. That sets the plane in motion, and will pull fuse-length loops. I can get it to go from hover to waterfall to hover, on a pretty consistent basis. Sometimes I will mess with the throttle during the rotations, to see if I can get them to remain at the same altitude, or descend slowly, like a true waterfall in a river. You do have to work the rudder and ailerons after about the 3rd or 4th rotation to keep it straight, and it will walk along with the wind. If you let the wing flop over to one side, and counter with opposite aileron and same direction rudder, you can get a nice inverted flat spin.
Another really neat maneuver I've been doin lately is to pull up to vertical, and as the plane slows almost to stall, take the sticks to the outside corners, and apply full throttle. The plane will tumble to the outside vertically, and then spin around the fuse, nose high, tail down, at about a 60 degree angle. You can either climb, hold altitude, or descend at a controlled rate by working the throttle rudder and ailerons. Looks reallllly cool. Steve |
