.30 Waco question

Where did you get the Focke Wulf from? Who makes it and what was its wingspan?

I got my focke-wulf through ebay but you can find them at Hobby-warehouse.

http://www.hobby-warehouse.com/focwulfwarf0.html

They are for a .09-.15 size engine. 35" wingspan, 220 sq. inch wing area. I started off with a os la .10 engine and was trying to hand launch. This tought me two things. The os la .10 sucks, and hand launching is always better with a good 5-10mph head winds to throw into. The la .10 was down on power (real down). It was ok up in the air but still weak. So after about 20 hand launches into the ground (no head winds) I then modified the plane to have a rudder/tailwheel so I could ROG. It comes with the instructions to do this and there really is nothing to it. I then went with their recommended engine the AP yellow jacket .15. What a difference. It was lighter than the OS .10 and swung the 8 inch prop with no problems (the .10 was limited to the 7 inch prop). This was my first lowwing gas plane so it got some abuse but they built this plane for combat so it took everything I could dish out (almost). Besides the hand launches into the ground initially (btw the .15 hand launched ok) I also had a sero fail in the wing and came straight in from about 30 ft at half throttle. I walked up and the tail was pointing straight up in the air like a perfect lawn dart. Motor was completely buried up to the firewall. Nothing broke until I tried to pull it out of the ground where I pulled the plane off the firewall. :D Some epoxy on the firewall, clean out the motor and I was back in business. Also sprialled it in from about 50 ft during a windy day (about 15 mph) when I ran out of gas while heading down wind. Tried to bank back around into the wind and she tip stalled (my fault). Luckily it rained the day before and the field we were flying over was really soft. Yep it lawn darted. Cleaned out engine at field and 5 minutes later I was flying again. Flew it for about 8 months when I had a extra .25 engine that I put on it. It was insane. All the great flying qualities of the plane were sacraficed for speed. Fastest plane I have seen to date. However the extra vibration eventually caused a inflight failure which lead to its death.

I don't suppose you have any photos do you?
Sounds great.

Here is a pic of the focke-wulf with a honkin' magnum .25 hanging off the nose. I only flew it with a cowl while it had the 15. The 25 got the big spinner and I liked showing off the engine. :D
I put some red/orange flames on it that I cur out of monokote because initially it was hard for me to keep track of it in the turns without some identifiers on the wingtips. Once I looked away for a second to see where my buddies plane was (he had a p51 and we would chase around) and looked back and couldn't find my plane. After a throttle down and about 3 seconds (felt like 20) of panic I found it. Lesson learned. Never takes eyes off of flying plane.

Next to it is a Herr Engineering AT-6 Texan that was meant for .049 to .061. It had a AP .15 on it. Great flyer even with the oversized engine. Later went to a norvel .074 and that was an even sweeter combo.

Neil,

Sunday I flew my de-electrified Waco for the first time. I did not check the weight but I am sure it's lighter and it flies so much better.

I now power it with an older OS 40 FS. Power wise it's a lot the same as the electric version I had, but because of the lower weight it flies much better, what a nice flying plane, no more tip stalls, nice slow landings. This plane really flies great.

Marcel.

MMallory, I bought the same engine for mine. I was wondering how you liked it after a summer of flying? How about balance issues? What is the flight time with the standard tank? Last question is did you go with the 2 micro 3 standard servo setup or did you use all smaller servo's? I'm putting one together more for a novelty then anything else but it would be great if it turned out to be a good flyer too.

I used HS81's in mine, but one of the wing servos has stripped. Take a close look at the control set up here and see if you can improve on it. The current arrangement puts alot of strain on the servos.

Re the Jamara Bipe is this a Quality ARF?
Is it strong? What engine is best 2 or 4 Stroke? Size?

Anything else you can tell me would be appreciated.

RE: .30 Waco question

A 2-stroke would be a much faster and aerobatic performance, but a 30 4-stroke is really nice for low circuits loops, rolls etc.

The kit is nicely built, but I found after not many flights I needed to replace the undercarriage plate as a few heavy landings loosened it. Mine now has a carbon one. The wheel spats are pretty but brittle.

Overall an excellent plane for calm days, and you can put it in the car assembled.

Hi Neil

Where did you get the carbon fibre undercarriage from? how much?

Thanks

Ray
