Ryan STA-M Help
 

I am nearing completion of my Great Planse Ryan STA-M......finally:eek:. It is powered by an OS120 to which I added a 90 degree exhaust adapter to tuck in the engine/muffler neatly inside the cowl. One problem: the exhaust pipe is touching the side of the cowl. I have tried adjusting the exhaust pipe but can't seem to get any clearance between the exhaust and cowl. I'm concerned that once the OS120 gets up to operating temp, it will ruin the fiberglass and consequently the finish. I have read on this Forum how others are running the same engine in their Ryan's. With the flying season rapidly approaching, I want to get this project done and airborne. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

I'm at the same stage. I have a Saito 1.20, I'm not sure how the exhuast angles differ but I put a couple of shots in my gallery.
I can't seem to figure out how to get a picture into these post boxes.

Thanks for the reply Alex. I like the way you set up your exhaust.....it looks great and you didn't have to carve out an extra hole in the cowl. My exhaust comes out on the bottom right of the cowl. I had to carve a small hole toward the firewall but it looks good.

Does anyone know if I will damage my cowl and the exterior finish if the exhaust header is making contact inside the cowl? I tried again today to make adjustments but had no luck getting any separation between cowl and exhaust.[:o]

It will blacken the fiberglass where it burns it. Also it will eat into the aluminum muffler or exhaust system where it touches. Try to get some asbestos cloth or some thing between them . I used a 91 magnum and an os exhaust 90 degree adaptor . Then I went to Home Depot and bought a sink hookup tubing. About $2.50 for the sink tubing. I bent a long 90 degree bend in it and cut it off short, Now all I have sticking out is a small piece of tubing. Look at the pictures in the following link. :eek: I run the magium 120 in my Ryan sta and Ive used the os 90 degree and the stock elbow that comes with the os 120 non pumped and joined them to exit out the bottom of the cowl, added a 3/8 copper tube bent to exit the bottom center of the cowl, using jb weld and drilled thru the fitting and pipe and used a 440 bolt and nut, no jb will not stand the temp but helps seal the pipe, I also turned down the end of the pipe and cut it off at an angle to devert the exhaust downward. hope this helps and it does work.
