THATS JUST TO DARN EXPENSIVE!!!!!!!!

This is just a fun little post I through up to get peoples reactions about certain R/C Plane related items that they think are just way overpriced.

I will start by saying that there really is not a whole lot that stands out in my mind as being way overpriced more than Pilot Bust! Are these darn things made of gold or what? Even the little cheap expressionless 1/6 and 1/5 Scale Pilot Bust that I have bought, and have to paint myself are in the $7.00-$9.00 range. Then you can buy some with facial expressions, and allready painted in the $20.00 range in the 1/6 and 1/5 scale. I can buy my Daughters a nice Barbie Doll for that who is loaded with accessories, looks great, and has a full body! LOL

Is it just me, or are these things JUST TO DARN EXPENSIVE for what you are getting in return? I feel like a sucker every time I buy one of these little bust!

Hi,

I agree that those painted pilots are darn expensive ! I bet them they were painted in Asian countries and boy, they are overpriced. You know what I do to get a nicely painted full body pilot? I go to the Dollar store and buy those male/female "hero" dolls for 1 buck! Then chop off the torso and you get a painted pilot bust with cloth clothing. And the head moves too... They are perfect for 1/5 to 1/6 scale planes. Dai Phan

Thats funny Dai! I do the exact same thing alot of times! I have had two pilots from the Dollar Store, and just hack sawed them in half! I have even had people ask me where I get my great pilots! For kicks I have told them that I know a place that you can get them for $20, and they say "WOW, thats a good deal!" Then I start feeling guilty, and tell them I just got it at the dollar store for a couple bucks, and hacked the poor guy in half! LOL

i use pilots in most planes. but the ones i don't, if asked why i don't have a pilot in it. i say its not scale for a RC plane to have one, after all the pilot is on the ground holding the TX.but yes pilots are over priced but till i can make my own i ant going to complain

Oh it don't bother me to waste or blow a little money here or there, and I am not complaining. It didn't send me to the soup line when I have bought those little Bust in the Past. I just get a kick out of how they come up with prices on some stuff without having people looking at them and saying "Your joking....Right?" Like I said in my last post about how they can make some of those cheap Dollar Store Pilots look better than actual Bust Pilots that were made exclusively to use in Model Airplanes. It just surprises me that someone has not come up with a website that sells custom allready sawed(LOL) Dollar Store Pilots to Model Builders.

By the way E-Mo, what is the name of that little cyclops guy in your Plane? My kids watch that show Lilo & Stitch, and I am racking my tiny brain trying to think of his name. My kids are not here to ask! Anyway he looks neat in there!

Expensive is a relative term. Anything you spend on RC is discretionary spending and therefore utterly unecessary. Different folks spend $50 on all kinds of different things to make themselves happy. Personally, I don't care to put dolls in my airplanes - be it $5 or $50. But if a guy thinks a $50 doll dresses up that 1/3 scale airplane just right and completes the package perfectly to his liking, then it might just be the best $50 he could spend.

I can think of a lot worse things to spend $50 on. Besides, I'm sure most ordinary folks think we are crazy spending hundreds and thousands of dollars on little toy airplanes.;)

yah, have to agree with that one. But then again Im sure ordinary people can find things just as "unusual" to spend their money on. everyone is different, spend your money on what makes you happy, not what the "norm" is. Hell Id spend that much money on a 14 channel TX, cant wait till JR release their new 16 channel one:D

My friends think Im nuts coz buy the end of high school I am gong to have a 35% aircraft with a $2000 engine in it sitting in my garage. I think their nuts beause, as much as I like playing cricket, they would spend $400 on a cricket bat, I can think of better thing to do with $400 if ya know what I mean.

I will say that Kyosho ARFs seem to be a little $$$$ for my liking, granted they are high quality planes but some of those prices, geez.

I bought one of those pink Williams Bros. pilots for a Reflex .25 I built.
My other pilots were a Jack In The Box winter ball stuck on a World Models pilot bust, a cut in half Chester Cheatah, and The Bus, Jerome Beddis.
Had Chester and Jack as pilot and co-pilot in my WM T-34 but I cant find any pix of em for some reason.

AHH, but you have to remember that the AMA requires a Pilot in the plane to compete in some classes. Oh and not to mention the dashboard too. (SCAM) :D:)

There are allot of items that are overpriced. Have you ever looked at the cost of a Carden Kit? (Boy, if that doesn't stir the pot)

I know what you mean, so I spend much of my time looking for pilots at Toys R US, Target, and Wally World. You can find some pretty interesting figures to use if you can find one that is scale. Here are a couple of mine. One is the flea from nickeloden (at least that's what my son told me) and the other is Super Mario in my 4*60. He is a story in itself. My son bought him for me on E-bay, it was a bobble head doll that was in mint condition still in the box. Some toy collector would have a heart attack if he/she knew I took the dremel tool to him, chopped him in half, ground out the head to lighten it, and then did some on the spot engineering to shorten his neck and put the head back on. I must admit, I did hesitate about cutting him up when I got him... only for about 30 seconds though:D

On my expensive list are

Scale retracts. I bought a fixed nosewheel from robart and it cost me $160!! [X(]
Digital servo's. These are way overpriced considering the difference between them and normal servos is $0.50 worth of electronics.
Recievers. $150 for a JR 770. [:@]

The $4.00 can of paint seems to be the best spent money here.
Hey guys, This is a silly post... [sm=spinnyeyes.gif]This hobby has never been cheap.[sm=angry.gif]
I'm sure everyone here drinks a bottled water from time to time, right?
Well for the sake of this post, average 16 oz. bottle of water is about $1.00.
Cheap ,right?
Thats a whopping $8.00 a gallon[X(]!!!!!!!! More than any of you pay for the most expensive gas at any gas station!!!!
So your pilot busts and etc aren't that badly priced.
SOOOOOOOO , just buy it:D

My vote for too darn expensive is GLOW FUEL. If you are flying a big plane with big 2 or 4 stroke engines these things drink fuel. I would fly my 1/4 scale extra with a Moki 1.80 on it and go through a gallon of fuel in one morning. This got expensive fast as all I was flying were large planes. I had to dump them and move on to gassers to save some money on fuel cost. Well that's what I keep telling myself. You can't win if you gotta play, you gotta pay.
