Chip Hyde CAP-X Engine Help.
I am a proud new owned of a CH CAP X and have some engine setup questions. I have talked to Chip and he discourages the whole DA50 thing,lol....even though it will work. I was hoping for this to be my first gasser...kinda had my heart set on it, don't really want the OS 1.60 unless I HAVE to,lol. I was thinking a ZDZ40 could be an OK choice. I know I would have to beef up the firewall, but what else would I need to strengthen? I don't want this thing to disintegrate on me on the occasional speedy pass. I really plan on hovering alot and tackling harriers..don't plan on too much high speed stuff. Also if anyone has and mounting templates and setup tips it would be much appreciated
Thanks, Erik |
RE: Chip Hyde CAP-X Engine Help.
Erik,
You wont be dissapointed with ZDZ range of engines. I have the 40 RV upto the 210. I can't make comment on the kit you want to use, as I have no expience of it's construction. I do have a ZDZ40Rv in a 30% Cap 232 3D by Topmodels.CZ specifically designed for a gas motor. I would recommend that the only type of firewall to use with a gas motor is made of aircraft quality ply (rock hard stuff). You can bolt the engine straight onto the firewall and not necessary to soft mount (this is a contentious issue with some!) but I and many of my friends have done this for years without any problems. I do recommend you use KS Krumschied silencer, wow the quality and performance is unbeatable! You will need to beef up around the firewall, I use 1/2" hardwood around the rear of the firewall. You also need to pin the sides of the firewall with a good quality hardwood dowel or screws for extra support. You will need to cut a hole on the firewall approx 50mm dia for the carb to stick through. You then will need to see how your going to get at the mixture screws, normally an appropriate hole for a screwdriver to fit through. On my CAP I had to extend the firewall forward for the spinner/prop to match the front of the cowl with a box section and this made the carb be outside the fuselage (if you follow) and it was easy to set up the mixtures with the cowl off. You don't need the cowl on to set the mixture, as it won't change after you fit it. Tip keep the ignistion pack well away from any radio gear. I hope this helps you, but word of warning. If the manufacturer says no to a gas motor, it's probably not strong enough in it's present specification, why did Chip say no? |
RE: Chip Hyde CAP-X Engine Help.
Deadeye,
Can you give some info on the KS Krumschied silencer you mention? I have looked at several of the pitts type gas mufflers, and notice that only one so far has made any attempt at a smooth transition from the exhaust port to the silencer itself. They direct the fast moving exhaust gasses into a right angle as soon as they exit the cylinder, BAM! The gasses bounce off the wall, back at the cylinder, terrible flow design! ZDZ had a muffler at the Toledo show (maybe it was the Super Sonic?) that had a small ramp incorporated into the throat of the header part of the muffler. It was at least an attempt at smoothing out the flow. |
RE: Chip Hyde CAP-X Engine Help.
FlyingPilgrim, (Oh how I love these handles)
Try these sites. Krumschied ship worldwide, but only Mrs Krumschied speaks good English and you can order on-line. You'll get all the technical speck in English on their site. If you need a ZDZ motor and the exhaust I purchase all mine from ZDZ.de service is just amazing, however as your on the other side of the pond, you may need to use aircraftinternational or whoever can supply you. I think RCshowcase do them, (they are the US importer for ZDZ). http://www.krumscheid-metallwaren.de/html/muffler.html http://www.zdz.de http://www.aircraftinternational.com...pl_muffler.htm You need to go to the bottom of the page for Krumschied A picture paints a thousand words, have you seen anything as beautiful for an exhaust and boy or boy are they very good performance. You'll see you can even have a DIY for any application. |
RE: Chip Hyde CAP-X Engine Help.
Erik, check out the review of the capx with a DA50 here on RCU in the magazine, you can see what I did to make it work, and even a flight vid. The DA50 is a fine option for the plane as long as you understand its gonna be sickly overpowered;)
Too bad your so far away, Id let you fly it, heck, anyone can fly it if they come to my field. |
RE: Chip Hyde CAP-X Engine Help.
Thanks for that info dead eye. Chip lists the engine range for the plane at a 1.6 glow to 50cc gas. After talking to him about getting a template to install a DA50 he said that he strongly discourages this combo because it was only an afterthought the put a gasser on it. The instructions for the plane give steps to follow depending if you are using a gas or glow engine. Since he said that the DA wasn't a perfect choice because of its size, I looked at the ZDZ40 and came to the conclusion that it probably wont be the amount of overkill the DA50 has. I am using all carbon fiber and titanium hardware and have decided to re-enforce the wing saddle area and beef up the firewall where ever possible and to not be too overzealous with the gas, lol. Heck if the plane falls apart it will suck, but hey..can always get another one. Maybe I should opt for the DA, that way if the plane does crash..I can buy the Double Vision from chip and put the engine in that!!

RE: Chip Hyde CAP-X Engine Help.
If your going to buy a engine anyway, buy the DA.

RE: Chip Hyde CAP-X Engine Help.
OK Swords drawn,
Go for the ZDZ. I've never heard anyone be able to put a downer on this motor. If you want a 50 the ZDZ50NG is a brute compared to the DA and the ZDZ40 is only a touch off the 50DA. I've heard that DA50 is having a problem when fitted inverted with the rods/crank seizing. Any truth in this? |
RE: Chip Hyde CAP-X Engine Help.
Nope, my DA is strong, and is the powerhouse of the 50cc engines.

RE: Chip Hyde CAP-X Engine Help.
Thanks for all the info John. I looked at your review and the vid, very nice... I am set on a DA50 now. I will use your review in the building of my plane. Just one question..how did you know where to mount the engine, did you make a template? If so can you post it so I can use it?
On the subject of the DA burning up like that while inverted is hard to believe, because I am sure when they design these engines, they know that they are most likely going to be mounted inverted. If you know someone who this happened to, I bet there was a bad part or two made, thats all...hopefully my optimism doesn't get the best of me,lol. |
RE: Chip Hyde CAP-X Engine Help.
Rev, I just put the cowl on, figured out where center of the front opening was, and then mounted the engine to work..
|
RE: Chip Hyde CAP-X Engine Help.
John & REV,
I have no experience of the DA only what people have told me. You know how it goes the story gets added to and added and in the end it's all a load of *****. The latest I heard was that it is linked to oil buildup in the small crankcase. It's probably just idle gossip and jealous they haven't got a DA So I wish you well with your DA and your conversion. |
