First flight with Tower Voyager
Hi there everyone. I had my first two flights with my Tower Voyager Mk1 ARF yesterday and was very pleased. It floated in for landings and was easy to handle in flight, just as I was hoping. I have been flying one of their trainers for a few years, so I was ready to move up, as long as it was a small move. I'm not good with inverted flight yet, so I was happy when the Voyager did not tend to go "Belly Up" as the slightest input. The Voyager is powered by a new OS .46 LA, (just like my trainer) and it ran perfectly, with only 2 tanks burned up on the ground for break in.
So, if you are ready to move up from a trainer, try the Voyager. The cost was minimum. The only mods I made was to reverse the engine and mount, and route the throttle rod along the other side, easy mods to do during the build. I left off the cowling as well. 3wire |
RE: First flight with Tower Voyager
I had the same plane. Put it through hell. It could really take a beating (surprisingly). I was actually training my girlfriend on mine. It's such an easy flyer that she picked it right up. In fact, I have no problem what so ever about recommending it as a first plane. This plane is proof positive you don't have to go with a high wing for a trainer. It has all the good characteristics a trainer should.
About your engine mod, I did the same thing. Flipped my OS 46LA right side up and left off the cowl. Worked great! You could cut a hole in the top of the cowl if you want to. I see no problem with that. Look a little nicer I guess. The only complaint I have about that plane (and this is true of many others) is that cheesy pvc covering they use on it. It sux and you will have to recover your plane before too long. It won't shrink back with a heat gun. It just bites. |

Aaron,
Thanks for the tips on the cowl and covering. That shelf paper stuff must be really cheap for the builders. Recovering is a good idea, I'm just a little hesitant to dive in. jack |
RE: First flight with Tower Voyager
I had the Voyager for a first plane also; loved to fly that plane. Not long before I lost it Tower stopped making it, I was really happy to see them come back. I was seriousely thinking of getting one but think it would be like stepping backwards.
I kept my engine inverted; didn't really do any mods to the plane. The only thing I changed were the main wheels. After I had flown it for a while I wanted to put a bigger prop, went with a 12 inch, and needed the clearance. Hope you have yours longer than I had mine, about 2 years. Take it up 2-3 mistakes high and do a roll or two. ;) |
