CMP Hellcat or Hangar-9 P40
I'm torn between puchasing the CMP Hellcat or the Hangar 9 P40. I want a nice looking warbird ARF that I can hang my Satio 120 on and that assembles well and flies great. Oh, and yea, I want it for under $250.
Any suggestions?? |

If you are going to use that 120 I would recommend the Hellcat. You will need to purchase retracts for the Hellcat if you do not want to use the supplied fixed gear. The 120 in the P-40 would require a lot of tail weight. They both fly really well. Here is a picture of my Hellcat. I was waiting for the retracts to arrive. I installed Sierra Percision retracts and they are awesome. This Hellcat flies really nice. The span is about 10" bigger than the P-40 and will weigh about three to four pounds more. I am using a YS 120 in the Hellcat which is a perfect match for this plane.

RE: CMP Hellcat or Hangar-9 P40
I'm using the Saito 100 in my H9 P-40 and it's more than enough power. I think the 120 is overkill for the H9 P-40, probably better for the CMP P-40. I'm waiting for CJM to make the 100 degree rotating pneumatics for my P-40 because the stock mech retracts are worthless piece of crap.[&o]

[8D] Wow, that bird is nice! Is that a CMP? Is the wing covering that comes with the CMP Hellcat any good?
How much do those Sierra Retracts cost? Do they come with everything you need? |
RE: CMP Hellcat or Hangar-9 P40
Yes, that is the CMP Hellcat recovered and repainted. The stock covering and paint is marginal at best. The Sierra retracts with control valve will run you about $285.00. The best retracts that I have ever had.

RE: CMP Hellcat or Hangar-9 P40
Go with the CMP P40 , I got one its a really nice plane . howevere you may need a bigger motor but what the hey , this hobby is all about build , fly & buy . it one big cycle of life :D

RE: CMP Hellcat or Hangar-9 P40
Hangar 9 will most definatley fly better because it is lighter and designed more to be a sport plane that looks like a warbird.
CMP planes fly more scale and therefore are trickeir to fly. Personnaly, I admit the covering job on the cmp is cool and you can add details to it, but in the air I would have to say ultracote looks better. Remember, it will be a lot easier to repair the hangar 9 arf then a cmp plane... I say go with the p40 from hangar 9 |
RE: CMP Hellcat or Hangar-9 P40
You do have one more option if you love P40ties the way I do !!! The VQ p40 , tan and green version . Do a search Richard L did an online build on the plane . It has flaps, real thick tail flying surfaces , comes with oleo struts , real nice detail , very good hardware ect .
I was very impressed with the quality of the build , all sheeted surfaces . Now it fly like a warbird , its heavier then the H9 P40 but I still feel its worth looking at . |
RE: CMP Hellcat or Hangar-9 P40
My vote goes to the Hellcat. It has a roomier cowl for that 120. It also has a bigger tail and flies easier than the P40. It was a better flying plane in full scale so it just figures. I also believe that repaires made to the CMP version will just make it look more WW and thus more scale. It's all good.;)

RE: CMP Hellcat or Hangar-9 P40
I like the hellcat , probably get one at Christmas , (can you explane repairs??) I assume you mean modifications by the modeler.
My problem with the hellcat vs the P40 is the short nose , I also dont think you can compare flight characteristics unless the same airfoil and scale downed demensions are used as in the real plane ;), I dont know if that is the case for either plane from CMP . Its a good point but I have to do the math to see how the measure up . |
RE: CMP Hellcat or Hangar-9 P40
What size prop re you using on that Hellcat?
