Warped wing on an ARF
Is it possible to have a warped wing on an ARF.
Thanks, Pete |

Sure, I've seen a couple but not a majority. How bad is it? You might be able to shrink the warp out if it's not too bad.

Yep!
I had one on my DP extra. My right wing panel had a slight warp to it when you look down the leading edge. It was enough to bother me, so I fixed it. Since I had heard DP customer service was slow, I took it into my own hands. I tried to shrink the covering, put weights on it ect., no help. I finally did surgery! I stripped the ultracote, and fixed it right. Also found that panel was not as thick as the other! I finally have the airplane ready to go (just about), but I could have built a kit faster!

Yes it is . Before you shrink your covering check to see if you do have warp age. If you co a lot of it can be taken out when you shrink up the covering. I just put together a H9 Cessna 182 and one side had 1` degree wash in and the other had 1/2 degree wash out. When I was done one side had 1/4 wash out and the other 1/2 wash out which was great.

The lower wing set on my GP Tiger Moth came warped. After trying to weight it down flat and reshrink the covering I had to ship it back to Tower (Hobby Services).
I had a new wingset in a week. Of course I shipped it back UPS 2 day, and paid a little extra for them to ship the new wing UPS 2 day. All in all the service was good. I always look at the wings and tail surfaces when opening a new ARF. I've passed up a few at hobby shops due to warps. Unfortunately this is an impossibility with shipped items, leading to the occasional disappointment. The stabilizer on my first Sig Rascal Forty was warped as well, but I was able to take most of it out with the heat gun while pressed flat on the workbench. Still a slight warp to it, but heck, it's just a Rascal, and it flies great. Good luck, Dave |

Thanks for the responses
Thanks guy's for the fast responses. I'm actually doing this for a friend. I told him his plank has a warped wing/etc. which is why his ARF flies funny. He thinks ARF's can't have a warped wing or stab/elevator/etc. Go figure :p
Thanks again for the suggestions..... Pete |

How can you tell when a wing is warped as far as flight characteristics.

What I suggest is either read a book on the subject and learn yourself, or ask a good pilot with many years of fixed wing, glider, controline and helicopter experience. The latter would save you a lot of time and effort. If you like, I have 45+ years of experience in all of the above fields, and as a multi magazine helicopter columnist, would be able to help you if you need it. Pete |
