Help with engine choice on p-47 arf
 

I was hoping for suggestion on an engine for the ModelTech p-47. I am thinking four stroke but have never owned one. I want plenty of power and would like an engine that would be useful in larger aircraft as well incase I ever put this engine into something else. But I am affraid of adding to much wait or too big of engine and tearing the firewall off.

Might want to try a saito 100 , that is what i use in my h9 p-51 , it really hauls butt,sounds cool, and runs like a clock.

Would a saito 180 be too big? I know that the power would be unessacary but if you look at the weight differences the 180 only weighs 11 ounces more and would be a more useful engine in the future if I thought I wanted to go up to a larger plane. Then again 11 ounces may not be the light huh...

I would suggest a Super Tiger 90. It is a great inexpensive engine with 2s reliability and loads of power. The 180 would be way to big. This is a 60-90 size plane. 120 4s max.
What is the quality of this kit. I am seriously considering this one and haven't heard much feedback.

You are probably right on the saito 180 being too big. As far as the quality of the kit is concerned I can only coment on the appearence as I have yet to look "inside" at glue joints and such but the plane looks amazing. I couldn't cover a plane this nice. There is only one very small bubble in the covering and it is nothing a iron won't take out. To tell you the truth I don't see how a plane that looks this good can only cost 199.00 . This is my first ARF and I know how much work goes into a plane from start to finish and the price is shocking when you think about it. Anyway as far as engine size goes I decided I wouldn't put anything larger than a Saito 100 in it but I will look into the Super Tiger 90 (is that a 2 stroke or 4?)

has anyone flown this bird yet? a member at our club has the p51 its a sweet plane for the money . I want the p47 but I would love to see some input , positive or negative.

I have one and have flown it. Put a Magnum .91 FS in it. Seems to do the job well. Had to add quite a bit of nose weight to get it balanced, so a .120 would not be too heavy, but the torque is already a problem taking off with the .91, a .120 would be even more trouble. Not many problems with the plane. Looks great. The covering is a little loose on the fuse, and wrinkles when exposed to the sun. Wheels that come with the kit are tiny, and hardly suitable for any grass field. I put bigger wheels on mine and enlarged the retract opening. Had a mishap landing on a windy day, and need to make some repairs to the wing. Despite the hard landing, it looks like the retracts held up. Covering does not quite match up with Ultracoat silver, so I'm not sure what it is. All in all I'm happy with the plane, and can't wait to get more flights on it to get it dialed in. Down load the manual and you can get a good feel on what the ARF looks like and how much work it will take to get it into the air.

Has anyone put a 2-Stroke 60 in the ModelTech P51? I've got a Magnum 60 that's just itching to fly in anything . Either that or I may get a P47 and put it in there.

Nice write up in this months Model Airplane News. I have one and am planning on a YS 120, or OS 108...but like the 4 stroke best. Kit looks good and a fair value for the price. Have Satio 100 in H( P-51............

Put a YS 91FZ in it. It fits nicely inside the cowl and provides the same performance as an OS 120 or a Saito 120. You wouldn't want to go with a 120 four stroke anyway since the valve cover(s) will be sticking outside of the cowl.

the guy at our club that has the p51 it has a os50sx ringed in it and it screams has problems with aileron flutter .I have the p47 and have a rcv 90 for power and am anxious to see how this motor performs.

I have a the Modeltech P-47 with a Saito 100 and believe me, it has plenty of power!!! More than enough.

This is my second Saito 100 and they both run like swiss watches, you can't go wrong with than combination.
