RE: ARF Racing Planes!

hey guys,

I have a shoestring and it flies great. I have a four-stroke .91 magnum in with a 13x8 power point prop and it zips along. I want to try a 12X10 next on it. It definately lands slower with a 14X6 prop. Sometimes it like to wobble on aproach but once she settles I can grease it in every time.

RE: ARF Racing Planes!

The older "speed" guys at the field pointed me to this prop since i had the tuned pipe on.... Said that it needed to get up on the pipe and turn RPM if i wanted to go fast. The plane is deffinatly fast! Im sure its 120mph at least goin off other planes that have been clocked at our field with a radar gun. I had a guy that flys Jets at our field fly my plane and he guessed it goin around 120-130mph. But that was just a guess and no radar gun was used. But i figure hes not too far off since he flys 200 mph jets a few times a week, and he would be more used to the speed. Im new to the tuned pipes and props in general. I havent been flying all that long. Although i fly good enough to be a AMA club instructor "which i am" I'm still new to the props and all that. I can just fly em LOL. Thats all i know.[:) Its funny because ill be teaching somone to fly and theyll ask what some other persons plane is or something about it, and i cant answer there question about that stuff alot of the times[:o] I bet that makes em a lil nervous to be on the buddy box with me haha. But after i save there plane about 20 times in 1 flight they prolly feel better about flying with me.[8D]

Im a little hesitant to go jump to a 15inch prop. I dont want it to be too much prop, and not have enough RPM to get up on the tuned pipe. But ill see if anyone has a 15x8 or a 14x8 at the field this week that i can try out! And ill deffinatly let ya know how it works out. Guess its all a learning experience. And thats for the info!

Did you test the 14 x 8 yet wondering how it worked out. THe only way to really find out what your motor likes best is to test it... Let me know how it works out...

UPDATE:

Way back month's ago when I started this thread it was between the "Toni,Shoestring & The Rare Bear". Instead of purchasing either of those three I bought a GP Geebee ARf instead. Very nice plane, "STILL N BOX" . I am now looking to going ahead and buying the Little Toni today from tower! If anyone has any photo's or anymore advice please share with me!

Also if you had to choose between the Toni & Minnow which would you pick & why?

Com'on people share your opinions........

RE: ARF Racing Planes!

I've seen the Toni fly, and it's nice....but the guy at my field that has one has a very hard time slowing it down for landing.....brings it in too hard almost every time. (and he's very experienced with fast, racing type planes)......but somebody did mention that changing the prop made it slow down much better.
I've also seen the Shoestring fly.....and I really like the way it looks in the air.......in MY opinion, it looks better than the Little Toni.....slowed down very nicely for landing, too.....so I guess I'm saying I still like the Shoestring! :D

RE: ARF Racing Planes!

That comes down to "talent." I have the Midget Mustang and the Shoestring, if you come in at a normal angle of approach, it may come in to fast. My approaches on the both of them are on the shallow side and it works out much better.

I really like the shoestring, I just read some bad things about the top deck that bolts over the wing. I think the Shoe looks totally awesome in the photo's Ive seen! It just looks like you get more plane if you were going with the Shoe over the Toni.

I just might choose the Shoe over the Toni after all,

If you have any pics of the shoe please post'em! [:-]

Go with the Little Toni. It's a beautiful acft and goes together fast. Worksmanship is excellent. I have one and it flys great, It has a Saito 91 and I have had no trouble landing it. I'm sure it's hitting 130 mph. I have a Mustang of the same power class and it was radar clocked at 126 mph. The Toni is faster.

Would you happen to have any photo's of the little toni, Or might even know where I can find a few?

Thanks

RE: ARF Racing Planes!

What do you guys think about using a Saito .91FS on the nose of the Shoestring, Will it fit without cutting the cowl? I have read about the Shoestring's weak landing gear but that is something that can be beefed up a bit. Also how does the window go on, Please someone submit a close-up photo of this baby and all it's glory!

I noticed tower had the Shoe on sale at Club price for 169.99, That seems like a pretty good deal to me, But if this plane has alot of trouble like with the quality or performance is it worth that price or should I just go ahead and swing the toni....

Does the toni still come with the Alumminum spinner?

Is the fiberglass work on the toni good, Is the pin stripping from the cowl to the airframe match?

This is what is keeping me from the toni!

Just want to know these kind of things about both, Please someone help me out here, It will be greatly appreciated!

RE: ARF Racing Planes!

Originally, you were choosing between a Toni, Rare Bare and a Shoestring. You chose that fat blimpy stupid looking GB which looks and flies lke a Blowfish. So getting back to the original 3, your decision can now only be better. The Shoestring is a very good plane. I would recommend it to anybody. making added strength modifications is a good thing to do on any ARF.

I don't feel the gear is weak since I now how to land but if you come in hot and drop it down like a brick, you will bust up any gear on any plane.

As far as cutting the cowl, you must cut out a nice looking hole underneath or the engine is going to overheat, so you may as well throe a Satio 100 in it

RE: ARF Racing Planes!

:D I have 36 planes, I have a little tony, and a Gee Bee "E" . The little tony flys to perfection. It is powered by a 91 supertiger with a 14-8 prop. The Gee Bee is powered by a rossi 46. The Gee Bee looks best flying and will get the most attention at the field. Both are fast, but thay are miles apart in power range. The Gee Bee will have the whole field stop flying just to watch her fly. Those lines and the cloth covering with the scalopes and the gee-bee landing gear. When I get her up on the pipe she sounds awsome and is very fast. I tell everyone that Howard Hughe is the pilot. A plane is only as awsome as you make it....... Attention to detail that is what turns heads. Speed keeps it there.. THE GEE BEE WAS A GOOD PICK The little tony looks to much like all the other planes at the field. like the edge and other areobatic planes. If you want speed go to a Q500 like a viper!

Co§MiC_WinÐ 10-20-2005 01:51 AM

RE: ARF Racing Planes!

No offense there Cyclic Hardover, But the GeeBee is not a stupid looking airplane in my opinion. Yes I grant you that it is not the slickest looking plane at the field but I also bet more people will talk about it when it is on the flight line rather than the same ole Extra's, Gile's, & Sukhoi's. I agree with you southernlifttruck41 on the GeeBee's profile while in the air!

I agree with others on the TT Rare Bear! it is a total waste of money, time, and a P.O.S

RE: ARF Racing Planes!

I've built and flown the GP Shoestring with a YS 110. Flies great, very aerobatic but not the fastest of the ones you asked about. The Minow and Toni have thinner wings and are probably faster than the Shoe. Do some research and you'll see the TT Bare is a complete POS and falls apart.

If you want something differant that flies great check out:

The picture on the website doesn't do it justice, I'll have some pics to post after the weekend cause we're doing the iHobby Show here in L.A. with the real plane and the model. The full scale has taken 3rd place Gold the last two years at Reno and has a very respectable record over the last 27 years.

The model is smaller and lighter than the others mentioned here, flies very aerobatically and fast. It is really complete out of the box and the finish is really nice.

I will agree with basinbum on alley cat. I saw the plane in person and had it in my hands at Reno. It is better than all the planes listed in this thread. The quality of this plane is top notch. I bet with a piped .60 two stroke it would beat all the planes hands down. And it looks like a million dollars. Cermark really should market that thing a little better than that crappy photo of it on their website.

alley cat is the best racing ARF you can buy right now. hands down.

Sorry about the "Fat stupid looking plane" thing. That just comes from see it fly here which reminds me of that Snoopy Dog House just oscillating around.

As promised more pics of Alley Cat. We had the full scale and model at the iHobby Expo in L.A. this weekend. If you really like to build this plane is not for you, it is so complete out of the box it'll go together in a day and the finish has been perfect on the ones I have seen.

BTW,
That's Krista Gibson from Inside RC the cable show. The pic doesn't do her justice and she says she is really into warbirds since she was little (she ain't "little" anymore). We're gonna have her come out and fly and see if she really has the stuff.

RE: ARF Racing Planes!

:)Hey BasinBum, I really enjoyed looking at the Photo's you posted! The model looks almost better than the real thing. "ALMOST" Thnx for sharing them,

Well today my wife ordered the Little Toni for me, So when I get it from Mr. UPS Man I will post some photo's of the plane as it comes out of the box & packaging! I am very excited, I was going to order the Toni months ago but instead ordered the GP GeeBee, Which I have decided to keep and finish, Rather than sell!

I am sticking a Brand New Saito .91fs on the nose of the Toni, What prop should I use?

Everything else that goes in the Toni is still being thought out "LOL"

Hope everyone is having a good day

:D

basinbum...
so what are your thoughts on the best engine to stuff this bird with?
(assuming you gave that a thought)

a rossi154r65?
a ys110?
a nelson? (hahahaha)

i saw someone out at the field last friday morning with one of these planes. i think he had an OS61 in it... inverted so he had trouble starting the engine. it flew real nice and it looks great in the air against blu sky... tho i think it can be a lot faster with a different engine. there is another guy (a dawn patroller) who flies a little toni powered by a ys110 and it screams.
