RE: Best engine for WM Dago Red 46?
Yes indeed BB the YS110 is the engine of choice at the basin! ;)
Maybe this message should be in the basin thread, but I did some calculations on the theoretical top speed with a 10 inch pitch prop (the 12x10 most commonly used), assuming no slippage (impossible, but it does give a theoretical maximum possible top speed). It goes like this, assuming the prop pulls the plane forward the 10 inches provided per revolution by the pitch.. 10 inch x 11500 RPM (about the norm for a 110 turning a 12x10) = 115000 inches per minute =11500/63360 miles per minute = 1.81 miles per minute =1.81 x 60 mph = 108 mph. How can that be? I'm sure we've clocked one of the warbirds at the basin at over 130 mph. Where did I go wrong? -David C. |
RE: Best engine for WM Dago Red 46?
David,
If you start with 130mph and back up your calculations we can assume the YS110 unloads in the air to 13728rpm's, seems plausable. |

RE: Best engine for WM Dago Red 46?
i measured a little toni on the ground with a 12x9 doing 12,500. a 12x10 could prolly do the same. it's quite plausible that the prop unloads 1,000 in the air. i don't think anyone's done any analysis on prop unloading factors other than just the standard guess of 500-1000 rpm's. it may even be higher. would need a laptop computer/sound card/ recorder as the plane flys by (averaging the doppler) to compute the number of power strokes per second.

RE: Best engine for WM Dago Red 46?
I think 12K RPM for YS110 is too much & it will reducr engine life.
I have both YS63S & YS110 on hand & it's hard to made the discussion but I think I'll go for the 63 & trying to put APC 12X8 on it. do you think the 63 can handle the 12X8? |

RE: Best engine for WM Dago Red 46?
i don't have a 63 so i can't comment.... you can, however, find that information in the owners manual or on-line.

Don't be a wuss! Go with the 110, the first post did say "if money was no problem" didn't it?

ORIGINAL: BasinBum Don't be a wuss! Go with the 110, the first post did say "if money was no problem" didn't it? I don't need a superfast warbird & if I found the 63 is not good enough for me then I can try the 110. |
RE: Best engine for WM Dago Red 46?
If you don't want speed than use the 63 but I hope you didn't buy the WM for it's scale appearance. As for the plane holding up....that is not an issue, I have seen at least 30 of these planes with a 110 and they hold up just fine to the stress. Seeing several in formation without mufflers (just a straight pipe) is rather fun to watch and a very regular sight at our field.

RE: Best engine for WM Dago Red 46?
Also, the 110 balances the plane perfectly without any need for any extra weight at the rear, even with the radio battery etc in standard easy to fit positions. In fact the one and only model I have seen with a 46 had to have a lot of weight added to the nose.
No, the YS110 is a perfect fit in every way without the need for any modification. -David C. |
RE: Best engine for WM Dago Red 46?
webra speed 55GT with J-tech pitts muffler, 10X8 prop. plenty fast enough for me.

RE: Best engine for WM Dago Red 46?
O.S. 120 AX APC 13-13 4 blade 8,500 rpm static, 14-14 2 blade 8,700 static.Fuel is YS 20-20.[:-]

RE: Best engine for WM Dago Red 46?
priyasman, you have a picture of that beast? that's a lot of engine for a 46 size plane...
|
RE: Best engine for WM Dago Red 46?
It's under construction so I will give details when finished. 120 AX is only 2 oz. more than YS 110 (without muffler extention).

RE: Best engine for WM Dago Red 46?
Ok you guys have peaked my interest in the WM Dago Red model. Does anyone know the link to the World Models website or a place that sells them?
Thanks RedTwilight |

RE: Best engine for WM Dago Red 46?
BTW- almost all of the planes in the video are WM 46 with YS110's.

BillVille
Thanks for the video, infact I have been to this airfield (Apollo) some time ago, in August 2005..... http://www.valleyflyers.com/ Watched some pylon races there on the first visit, on the second one was some free flyers ... Awesome flying field. Hope to visit again some time in the near future, :D Hisham |

Great Bill...
Maybe we'll meet some day, when I travel to your side of the globe... What type of airplanes do you fly ??? any pix.? ;) Hisham. |
