Power Plant For A Rare Bear

Yea, so I decided to buy it. I have read different things and I'm a little concerned with the thought of having an underpowered 11lb racer. The plane calls for a 90 2s or 120 4s. So of course I'm thinking saito 180, ys 140 or a TT 120 2s. I'm kinda leaning towards the thunder tiger 120 because I know I can modify that cool Rare Bear incowl pipe to fit it. If anyone knows stats on these motors like realistic rpm and fuel consumption please fill me in. Thanks in advance.:)[8D]

The YS140 would be a great engine for the Rare Bear, the TT120 has the same output as the YS110 only. The TT120 will turn something like a 15x8/16x6 whilst the YS140 will turn an 18x6. If you feel a little rich then why not the YS160? Still the TT120 is a very nice engine, I loved mine a lot. Easy to tune and will start with a flick. Anyways, I seen the Rare Bear with a TT91 2C ... it flies okay ... so I think the TT120 will be brilliant.

Ther should be NO choice to make....it's a stand-off, or semiscale model right? It's GOTTA have a 4 stroke....just to continue that illusion in the air......PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEZE put a 4 stroke in 'er. The 4s will also come closer to sounding like a realistic rpm....

But to answer you questions....I'm sorry, I can't help with the technical stuff you're asking....and you'll notice I didn't even say....Use the Saito! Even tho there really is NO other engine to choose from, is there? lol

If you put the TT 120 in it you will most likely have to add a pound of lead to the nose. Os 1.60 makes it balance without any weight added and also makes it "haul the mail". Good luck

I hate to pop your balloon here but there was a thread here sometime back on the Rare Bear regarding the failure of the rear stab and many planes have been lost to include two of them where i'm at. Had one guy win one and traded it off because he did not want to deal with it. If Ace or whoever makes that thing has not come up with a fix, avoid it

The TT120 would make a good choice. Good engine, will give you pleanty of performance.

From a CG standpoint, Im not entirely sure why others have had to add so much weight. A local one flying here is flying with an OS91FX and the scale exhaust - balanced pretty close with the battery pack up on the firewall. Flys pretty well.

But there is a lot of experience in here with the Bear, so I will not by any means discount it.

I did a fit-up for someone not long ago for a Jett BSE-120 and turbo-jett muffler installation. Fits in there perfectly. Engine is the same size as the TT90 and OS90 the plant was designed for, so it drops right in. Turbo-Jett fits nicely in the cowl. He expects to run one of the Supercool 16x9 AT-6 racing props (clipped a bit to about 15" dia - get up to around 11K rpm).

[link=http://www.jettengineering.com/hall/at6com.html]info page on the AT-6[/link]

Da Bear is about the same size and load as the AT-6, flys in about the same speed range - should work pretty well.

BTW... there is no model 4-c engine that sounds anything like the full scale Rare Bear. :) Lots of cylinders firing with every turn of the prop. Such a sweet sound too.

I hope this is helpful
Bob

C'mon Cyclic Hardover,
It sounds like he has already bought it. The stab being weak is well documented, along with the gear mounts, pushrods, and hardware package. Now that we all know that, lets be smart and fix it during the build. Just because TT or Ace has not come up with a fix dont tell him to avoid it. Lets tell him how to fix it. IF Dudeman283 is smart enough to glue two sticks together than he is smart enuff to fix the problem areas of the RB. It will be a great flying airplane for him if he does. My RB is my sunday flier with an os 160. BTW....the RB thread has 44 pages of good info on how to improve this bird, definately a must read prior to building. Dudeman283 I wouldnt be as concerned with having an underpowered 11 lb racer as I would be with making sure I have a structurally sound aircraft. Good luck

Does it take that much to get the CG right on the RB?! Anyways, Bob is right about getting any 4C engine to sound anything like a 4,000 HP engine on the real RB. I heard the TT91 2C on the pipes that came with the RB, it was okay.

RE: Power Plant For A Rare Bear

Keep your pants on, I am just bringing it up in case he was never aware of it. That stuff comes up and hangs around for a while and new guys never get the information. Now he has something to think about. I don't know what some of these guys did to fix it but maybe he will ask for the help.

I think its part of our responsibility to bring up the past, especially if they have not fixed it yet and I do not recall any "memo" on it but I may be wrong. If I have to ruffle a few feathers in order from him to keep from stuffing his plane-I can live with it.

BTW a 1.60? good choice. I'll keep that thought in mind since I do things like that

RE: Power Plant For A Rare Bear

Cyclic - I am not ruffled ... I wanted to buy the RB when I saw the ad ... now I am just surprised that the plane needed a bit of weight for its nose to get the CG right. At least you are not ruffling feathers of some old turkeys!!! Hahahaha ... I remember that one!

RE: Power Plant For A Rare Bear

Cyclic,
I couldnt agree with you more. The OS 160 is the perfect power plant for this bird in my opinion, makes the RB go upstairs like you wouldnt believe.
BTW...what did you fly in the ARMY, I am a 58D and UH-1H guy myself. see ya
