Glow fuel proof pain?
 

Please help with a paint brand that is glow fuel proof. So far I have tried about 9 types/brands of fuel and all smear or disolve in contact with glow fuel. I use Cool Power 15% for fuel.

Too bad they discontinued the K&B epoxy paint. It was bulletproof. I always used the clear as a topcoat and it was indestructable. You might try some of the newer epoxy clearcoats or I found that the polyurethane clears work pretty good. Good Luck!

I've tested some rustoleum and it was not fuel proof. Others claim it is. Your best bet is automotive two-part paint (I believe they are polyurathane based). You can buy your own (very expensive, have to buy larger quantities than most modelers use), or go to a body shop and have them mix & spray for you, you pay either way. Best bet is either Klass Kote two part epoxy paint or if you don't want to use a compressor, LustreKote.

Nelson hobby paints are as well as the H9 brand that matched the Ultrakote colors. Occasionally you can still find the Chevron/Perfect paints.... They're fuel proof also.

No hobby shop spray paint is fuelproof... simple as that. Sorry!
To get a fuel proof finish you must use an automotive 2 part acrylic paint like SIKKENS autocryl , Glasurite or PPG paint and these has to be sprayed on using semi professional equipment. They are also very toxic and has to be treated carefully, sprayed outside and using a filter mask (preferable a fresh-air filter mask).

Jan- you're talking about "hobby shop spray paint" as in plastic model paint right? The H9 spray and if you can find it Coverite spray, and lusterkote spray and chevron spray are all fuel proof.

They didn't discontinue the K&B paints, they area available online from k&B.

Go to the auto parts store and look for Glas-Kote Truck and Van spray paint. Look on the back and verify that it is acrylic lacquer. Good for up to 20% nitro.

You need to be carefull with auto paints these days. Some use a latex base coat and a poly clear coat. Lots of new stuff to get around the EPA, never know what you will get.

K&B isn't producing any more. The colors are limited to only what they have left in stock. Klass Kote is an awesome replacement. Plus you can interchange the colors and hardners with the K&B.

Be very very careful when you ask on this forum about which paints are fuelproof. I asked the same question months ago and was told pretty much the same answers that appear above. I finished an 8 month build with a very sticky airplane that became sticky with 10%nitro fuel after only a few flights and the wrong paint. I am going to send for a clear from Nelson hobbies that is designed for this hobby to be fuel proof and hope I can spray on my plane. I think some of the automotive Lacquers may work as well but I would be leary about which ones to use. THE ONLY PAINTS YOU SHOULD BE USING ARE THE ONES SOLD AT HOBBY SHOPS NOT AT HARDWARE STORES. There, you have been warned.

Get the cross linker for the Nelson hobby paint also.

I remember a thread awhile back asking for fuel proof paints and everyone was giving their opinion not knowing if it was glo or gas fuel that was being used. I've also found out that people who jump in on a thread might give their opinion without reading the thread all the way through.

Well I have seen their web site items switch from "out of stock" to "in stock". Since K&B didn't actually manufacture the paints, I don't see why Mecoa can't order from the same source. They seem to have most of the products on their web site.

The site says "colors not listed will not be produced again". So looks like a reduction of colors, not a complete shut down.

Because of a change and pain with the epa..... I doubt that they'll be "in stock" anymore. Besides their "new" ultrapoxy wasn't as good as the old stuff.

K&B never actually made this stuff, the industial paint companies are formulating paints all the time. You put your order in for several drums of resin, thinner, and pigments, some mixing epuipment and you can be in the hobby paint business also. I see no reason K&B would quit, unless they use poor marketing and are not selling paint. I don't even see the quality of paint that big of an issue, its marketing, marketing, marketing.

I realize they never made the stuff.... But if you look at their current color selection, it would be pretty tough to make the colors you might need specially for a warbird. When their original formulation changed, alot of their following went by the boards... much for the same reason it's tough to find Hobby Poxy anomore. Klass Kote is about the only one that's marketing to hobbyists.

I don't see a large selection of colors at Klass Cote either. And the colors they have are almost double the price. I agree that a larger selection of colors are needed for the scale people, but not all using paint fly scale. IMO if I flew scale I woud simply take some color samples down to the local hardware store and buy some latex.

But at least with Klass Kote they have the primary colors you need to make any other color.

I do use alot of Latex in my scale creations. It's easy to use when you follow a few simple "rules." Back in the late 70's K&B's epoxy paint was the "only" one to use.
