Modeltech P-47 ARF
 

Hi.
I have read all the threads I can find on this bird and most of the commentary has been positive. A good flying airplane of good quality. I did read over and over how poor the covering was. Well my local hobby shop had one of these P-47's in stock. I was pleasantly surprised when the box said that it was covered in Monokote! I quickly opened the box and took each part out of the bags and examined it. The covering job looked real nice (as ARF'S go). well I could not resist.........I bought the P-47. Interestingly enough, the hobby shop also had the Hangar 9 .60 size P-47 in stock. I choose the Modeltech for it's razorback planform. Another deciding factor was the beefy looking built up and sheeted tail. The hangar 9 P-47, like my Hangar 9 Corsair, has that stick built flat stab. Not very realistic looking. Anyway, does anyone know if Modeltech switched to Monokote after all of the bad feedback regarding its original covering on the P-47?

yes, they changed this past year. I bought one two years ago and it has the crappiest covering on any plane I own. I hope to strip the plane down this year and recover mine. The plane is very nice, flies good, very stable. My field is grass so I changed the retracts to H.D. Robart and added larger wheels. I ordered Hanger 9 Mustang wheel wells to make up for the larger wheels. I'm flying the Jug with a Magnum .91 Four Stroke.

I have mine here in the "My Models" icon. I've had it a couple years. (Pre Monokote) I installed a OS 1.08 in it and lowered the fuel tank to avoid any problems. Runs real good and a nice flying plane. The covering is okay. Does not take heat very well and melts up easy. Some here have replaced the retracts with better ones.

However with my 1.08 up front , it still came out tail heavy which is something you need to keep an eye on. Beef up the firewall inside and out a bit and around the retract mounting blocks and should be fine. I recover most everything I have and I'm sure the P-47 will get a new kote when its time.

It's good to hear that you like your Jugs. I am putting Robart 510 series retracts in my p-47 with the left and right offset Robostruts. I will look at beefing up the firewall and such. I had to do the same thing with my H-9 Corsair. I will probably go with an O.S. .91 FX with a Bisson inverted pitts muffler. I have one of these in my H-9 Corsair and the combo flies well. How is the 1.08? I like large loops and good vertical. The 1.08 must be awesome. Hope the .91 is enough.

The 1.08 is inverted and I lowered the tank to avoid problems. I run a sportscale muffler which is like a set of straight pipes out the bottom. A 91fx will definitely bring scale flight. Honestly I think you could use some more power than that. Its a nice flying plane. many guys have them here and all a happy with them.

Honestly I don't think your going to get the performance you want with a 91fx with good loops and vertical but that is only my opinion but it is a nice plane

mine flies ok with the 90 FS but this plane would shine with the new Saito 125 or a YS 110
