GP Shoestring
I have went through just about all the threads involving the Shoestring about which engine to use and I am still lost, seems like alot of them will require you to add weight to the tail to get it to balance right. I had a Magnum 91 four stroke on mine and I wasnt that impressed with the speed, I had a 14x6 prop on it. Anyways which engine out there is going to give me the most power and not going to require alot of added weight in the tail. I was looking at that Saito 82 but not how much power I will get out of it.

I had to add weight to the tail even with an OS 61 2 cycle.
It's no big deal, there is a spot back ot the fuselgae you can cut open, add the weight, then recover that small section with cub yellow monokote- no one will ever see it. |

I run a G90, a Pitts and no tail weight. Theres nothing wrong with adding a bit of tail weight . You will find many who run a Saito 100 which is a good combination. A Magnum 91 is not a good engine for this plane id you want performance. That 91 puts out about as much umph as a 60 2 stroke which will fly the plane as your aware of but nothing to brag over. A Saito 82? You may as well keep the Magnum. Sounds like you want your Shoestring to be a hot little flyer. Saito 100 or 90 2 stroke is your answer |

If you want speed--then put a 2-stroke 90--100 on it and use a high pitch prop.
You are running a 4-stroke with a 6 pitch prop. I'm not surprised that your unhappy with the speed.[sm=lol.gif] Put a ST90 on it and use a 12-10 prop. That should put a smile on your face.[sm=thumbup.gif] |

With my G90, I run a 13/8 apc. This is a very impressive setup. Been flying it nearly 4 years now.
The time frame alone is noteworthy:D The trick to this stuff is the overall opinion. Yeh we have our own engines but the overall point being made is that you are under powered which is what you need to pick up on. After that the choice is yours. I prefer Supertigers as a all around engine but do have Jett and OS also. |

Well if you knew what I do to some of my planes, you would ignore me. I have a Saito 100 on the 40 size WM P-51!!! I run a 12x12 prop
Now a guy here also has the Shoestring with a Saito 100. He runs a 14x8 apc. Thats where I would start for a few flights and see how it goes. I think I have a picture of mine in the "My Models" icon here |

GP Shoestring, my friend has one, it's a nice flying plane,,, buy an OS 70z heli motor and burn 20 to 25%, she'll go then LOL...

Sorry I read this too late, but, IMO, the Saito125 or ys110 would have been a better choice. This plane with a Saito 100 will be slower than the same plane with a 61 2s (eye witnessed).
I had the same experience with my h9 mustang. My friend with the 61 2s would spank my saito 100 powered. But I did win the cool factor (engine sound, his was pretty loud). |

The 125 is new and i would avoid it until all the suckers are weeded out and we find out if its worth it. YS has a good rep as a powerful engine but an equal rep as being a real pain of an engine.
Also I am very impressed with my setup and the guy with the Saito 100. We'er also at 5000ft and take a healthy power loss. This combo at a much lower altitude will be much better than here. |

i have the shoestring fitted with an OS91 Surpass II. Using the normal 14x6 prop, the plane is slowish... it does have a very thick wing so i assumed that was partly the reason for the lack of speed. I am sure a more "pitchy" prop would speed it up. I recently bought the Saito 125 to go into an excelleron90. I have started the motor but havent had time to fly it yet. I cannot remember the specs, but i sure the Saito125 is almost the same weight as the OS91. One thing i do know, is that the mounting dimensions are the same as the OS91, which is the same as the Saito100... i guess you could go nuts and try out all 3 different motors in the same plane! |

i have the same problem i want speed too but i dont wanna go 4 stroke i like 2 strokes,
do u think if i put in a os 91fx will do the job with plenty of speed.?? |

I powered mine with a HB .61 and it flew at a SCALE speed. My friend said it looked just like the RENO air races. Don't forget, the full size String went about 200 mph MAX. At 1/4 scale that would be about 50 MPH. Shoestrings do not go 600 mph. PS it had plenty of power to do aerobatics and that is at 5000 feet altitude.

Well I put a Super Tigre G90 on my Shoestring. Pitts muffler and a 12x10 prop. Hopefully I will get to fly it next week. I did have a magnum 91 4stroke on it. Is it pretty much going to fly the same, just with more speed?

12/10 is not bad but consider a 13/8 apc after a while. I am at 5000ft and the combo is a performer. At your altitude, should be better.

I found a apc 13x8 in my pile of excess props. Would you recomend a 13x8 prop for a Great Planes Minnow as well? I also have a super tigre g90 in it. I cant find any info about that plane, just wondering if you thought a 13x8 would work on it as well. Right now I have a apc 12x10.

just finished my Shoestring G90/pitts had to add 3 ounce of lead to the tail. Seems like a lot. How much did yours take?

I had to use about 2 ounces, I shouldve used a bigger battery and shoved it back into the tail.

I even have the battery in the back, small 750 type.
