World Models P-51?

Well my World-Models P-51 is almost finished and hopefully I will get it in the air tomorrow.

It has an OS FS-70 II on the front and I am really looking forward to flying this baby.

Does anybody have any flight tips for this plane?

Anything to watch out for? (Except the retracts, I have heard all about those!)

Hi Mav,

Just woundering about the retracts you have heard about. Good or bad?

I have heard that the retracts can bend when doing a not-so-perfect landing on grass! I have also heard that World-Models have upgraded the guage of the wire used, so maybe it isn't a problem anymore.

I fly of a paved surface anyway, so hopefully I won't have a problem.

World/Airborne may have upgraded the wire but it is still very weak. I fly off a smooth rolled grass field and if I do very many touch-n-gos I do not use the retracts until I check them out on the ground. The wheels are too small also,I don't know why they can't put a decent size wheel on their ARFs.

chook-

Are you gonna mount the engine inverted? Looks like from the pic. that you haven't mounted the engine yet. I just got a Rambler 45. My first WM arf..really impressed. Just wondering how big the cowl is on the mustangs. I'm just down the road from you in Perry. Do you fly at the Linden club? I went and checked it out a few weeks ago. Looks like a nice site. Think I am gonna join.

Linden club

Hi Dan,

Engine will most likely be mounted piston up, any way you mount it you will have to open up the cowl. I am not a big fan of inverted glow and I know some would say not a problem . I do not belong to any club right now. I like to go to the shows on about every weekend, so being a club member does not fit in for me. I was a member in Linden and they do have a great place to fly. A little bit of a drive from Perry but all E-way.

Thanks for the reply. Think I will try it inverted. Iv'e heard of far more people having good luck with inverted 4-strokes, but not 2-strokes. The way it is around here, dont know when I'll get to fly again though to find out.

Thanks,
Dan

Well mine has an inverted OS FS-70 II in it and it ran without a problem today!

A lot of people tried to tell me I would have problems running it inverted but practice showed me this is not correct.

By inverting the engine I only have the rocker cover and the muffler sticking out of the bottom of the cowl and it looks great.

....and yes I did get to fly it today! I finished it at about midnight last night and took it to the field this morning.

I ran 2 tanks thorugh the engine and then put 3 flights on it and I love the way this thing flies.

It looks and sounds great doing a low fly-by and then pulling up into a victory roll! :)

I'm hooked on warbirds and 4-strokes.

Glad to here it Mav, now you have me all pumped up. I just wish this snow would melt so I can try mine, maybe sometime in May.

Great to hear that the plane is a great flyer. How much of a problem is it to land. Does it need a lot of speed? I heard back from a guy that has a Kyosho P51 and he says it flys like a 4*. It can really rip around the sky and then lands really slow.:D

Fast,

Landings were really quite simple. For the maiden flight I had nearly all of the club members present at the field standing behind me watching (including the club president) and I brought the thing in almost perfectly and I didn't need to carry much speed into the landing.

It was a great confidence booster.

I tried some low speed flight up high before the landing to see what it would do and it didn't drop either wing.

Thankx for the update!

I love Mine!

I have the yellow Bob Hoover version and I love it. I also have the OS 70 but mine is inverted. The only problem I have had with the retracts is on one side. And on that side if I let It sit on the gear it bends forward slightly and I just bend it back before flight. The gear have handeled several dinked landings and heavy cross wind landings.

The closest thing to a bad habit it has is that it is more likly to get into an acelerated stall than any other plane I have flown. I almost stuffed it doing a very tight turn at about one mistake high. It snapped and spun.

Very interesting!

My OS 70 is also inverted. Plus I have also noticed that the gear on one side only bends forward slightly and then will not retract fully. A slight push back and everything is good again. Strange that it is only on one side and also that it bends forward just like you say.

I expected the gear to bend backwards.

Snow!?!? What snow?!?!?!?!

Here in Coon Rapids, MN we barely have enough to cover the grass.
