I just replaced the soft landing gear legs on my Harmon Rocket and thought I'd post here to let everybody know what I used and how easy it was. Based on the photo and description on Tower's website, I took a chance and ordered a set of replacement gear legs for a "Venus II .61-1.20 ARF" (Great Planes #GPMA2528) because they are a two-piece set that appeared to closely resemble the original Seagull units. They fit with only minor trimming (I cut 1/8" off the front of the mounting tabs with my scroll saw) and only one hole in each leg had to be redrilled in order to use the existing blind nuts in the plane. I also had to remove a small amount of wood at the front of each slot that the gear slides into in the side of the fuselage. You'll need a set of bolt-on axles to work with the new gear and another way to mount the wheel pants, the Venus gear has two small holes already drilled for mounting them with screws. So if you're looking to replace the gear that came with the plane, try these, it's pretty easy and they are a LOT stiffer. -Dan

I epoxied some ply into the wheel pants today, when I put them back on the plane I'll shoot some pictures. Might be a couple of days before I get to it though.

i HAD one of these. i got it at a local rc auction. i went out to maiden. went well untill i pulled back after seeing a guy take off ( with out clearence) and the tail ripped off. the thing came down with nothing i could do . its not fun to watch your new plane fall to the ground.

after finding all the peices i found that the enitre tail was held on with zap....
will never buy a prebuilt plane agian.

Walexan, Would you have considered using a Slimline "Pitts" style muffler instead of the stock one on your ST .45 ?. I just changed out my Enya .50 [ which I could not get to idle no matter what I did to it ] to a SuperTigre .51. It fit just fine with a Pitt's muffler and a lot less "hogging" out on the cowl. MM

On the landing gear: I wouldn't bother changing the gear struts.

A couple of weeks ago we had dense fog at the field. To test the thickness of the fog, I took off and did a couple of circuits fairly close in and upon landing, pancaked my Harmon.

Yep the stock gear bent a bit; if it had not bent, I'm sure there would have been some damage. As it was, I bent the gear back and flew several times that morning after the fog burned off.

When I was becoming used to landing the plane I bent the gear several times, but they bend right back and really offer some good shock absorbtion.

Well I got my gear changed out today! A stouter set that should hold up much better. I realize that some may actually like the softer gear in the event of a hard landing, but I wanted something that could stand up to some less than perfect landings, and capable of handling repeated touch and go's if I choose to do them.

What some guys have been doing around here with their Rockets is to change out the main gear with some Klett plastic gear and use a Klett tailwheel setup. A few others are strengthening the gear mount by adding a little bit more ply to the mounting plate.

Here's a twist. Needed a new Rocket cowl for a different engine install, so I call H-9, they send one right out. When it get's here, first off, it look's like an assembly line reject cowl. Warped for one thing but the outside spinner back-plate ring demension is much smaller than my first cowl. Did Seagull decide to do a change on cowls somewheres along production ? Something tells me I'm going to get the shaft on this one. Nothing like having a $60 dollar spinner for my previous cowl having to sit on the shelf while I go out and buy one that will fit the new one. The reason I say this is cause I'm quite sure H-9 is going to say " sorry, that's all we got " Sorry for the gripe, but I just had to vent it to the forum. [:@] MM

Yo Stallwart, Thank you, hope you got my reply. Problem with the ST.51, carburator is just too big. It would really mess up the cowl. So I went back to the Enya and was somewhat fortunate to find a new $66 dollor carb for it from MRC. I just can't seem to win :(. MM

surjestion for landing gear carbon fiber as many people have used this on many planes like the harmon i have only ever seen 2 harmons fly my dad and a friend from the club at bvrmc

I am thinking of buying a Harmon Rocket, I have a few questions. I have a evolution 46 and a super tiger 60. Which motor would you suggest. Please help

The Evo 46 will haul it around with a 11x6 prop very well. My 52 with a 12x6 is fast with lots of vertical. No doubt, the Super Tiger 60 will do even better.

We have a club member who has one with an EVO 46 installed. He just made the 6th maiden flight and ended in a crash for the 6th time. Every time the plane lifts off it rises about 3 to 4 feet and then rolls to the left. After all the rebuilds and adjustments this problem has not been solvable. I was present at this last flight. Several of us checked the plane completely. Balance has been verified and side to side also checked. We even added some extra throw into the alerons but this did nothing. The plane will be stripped and scrapped. This is not a happy aircraft owner. Anyone have experience with this problem let me know. I had considered buying one but not after what I have seen.

Hi Silverwing,
that's a new one on me, I've never heard of anyone having handling problems with these, other than one or two complaints of crosswind landings. Everyone who's seen mine fly or had their hands on the sticks say how nicely it flies. Just a thought but, your clubmate hasn't got some unwanted mix switched in on his transmitter?
