What engine to put on a yellow Monocoupe?

This post concerns what engine to put on the little (yellow) Kangke Monocoupe. I know that this subject has been discussed here many times already but a clear answer is still elusive to me. Some folks say that a .70 two stroke is just about right but others have said that the Saito .90 radial is too small (which breaks my heart because that is such a sweet little engine.)

So, what works and what doesn't? To avoid the confusion found in the other posts, please note that this concerns ONLY the yellow Monocoupe. and whether you prefer a 2 or 4 cycle engine for this pretty airplane.

Thanks guys!

I'm flying mine witha Irvine .72 and it probably could be said that the Irvine flies the plane "scale like" meaning it could use some more power. I think a 90 2 stroke would be perfect for this plane power wise but I had to add alot of weight to the nose of the plane (over 10 oz's). You could probably go with something alot bigger than the 90 because of haoe tail heavy the plane is.

I had a Magnum 91 four stroke on mine. It flew it ok but you really needed a long take-off with partial flaps to get into the air. It will take off without flaps, just need a long run or more power. If I were to build another one (dumb-thumbed this one), I would go with a 120 four stroke. I really like the look of the plane. Quality was good.

Saito 100 four stroke has plenty of power for this plane. Did not have to add any weight for balance.

Hellcat,

I haven't purchased my engine yet so I'm still open to suggestions (although it will probably be a Saito.) If you were to do it all over again, would you stay with the 100 or jump to the 120 (or 90 single)? I've discovered that the Saito 90 radial only puts out .65hp, equivalent to the Saito 56, so I won't be putting one on my Monocoupe (a shame!)

And I recall from another post that you used a false engine front from a Hangar 9 T-6. I tried to find the part on the Hangar 9 website but had no luck. (The Hangar 9 site is not as easy to use or as complete as Tower Hobbies' site!) Can you help?

Also, there has been some discussion on other posts regarding the flaps. Some say that they're useful on the big Monocoupe but not really worth hooking up on the little one. Your opinions?

And didn't someone install a Sullivan tailwheel assembly to take the shock loads off the rudder servo? Is this a worthwhile mod?

Thanks, guys, for your inputs!

Saito 100 is perfect for this plane. Scale flight with half throttle. The Hangar 9 Corsair dummy engine #HAN2587 will work. Flaps are not necessary, but I did install them.

Getting ready to start mine... Was planning on a Mag .91 4s but sounds like no joy there... Got a Saito 1.20 sitting here unemployed guess I will go with that... Got my Corsair dummy engine ordered.. Thanks guys.
