Hi Adrain,
What type of luck are you having with your OS 91fx & pitts muffler combination? Are you running a pump on it or what? What size prop are you getting best results out of. NEDYOB |
Seagull Models Edge 540
we run big fuel tubing and drilled the clunk in the tank , we spin it with a 14x6 for great performance.

RE: Seagull Models Edge 540
Hello All,
I came accross a new 91 ASP engine and got it at almost half the cost. Im going to drop this in my Seagull 540 and see if it out performs the OS 91FX. The ASP 91 is the same size as the OS 91FX, but has the needle valve on the carb. I want to get away from installing a pump & remote needle valve on the OS 91FX. Trying to keep everything simple as I can. Will let you all know how it works out. NEDYOB |
RE: Seagull Models Edge 540

RE: Seagull Models Edge 540
I have been flying this plane for over 6 weeks now. Engine- Sato 120, total weight 8lbs, 3 oz. I moved the GZ back 1/2 inch from the instructions, PLANE FLYS GREAT !!! will do anything you ask it to. Vertical is fantastic. Hovers like a 40%er.knife edge all day. This is one fine kit and a darn nice plane. Throw the hardware away and use high quality 4-40 rods or carbon fiber rods espically on the rudder and elevators. Use high torque servos as I stripped 2 standards the first week.
Only problems I have had is with the canopy, loose screws every time I fly it, the wood is soft, there are 4 screws attaching it, I loose one per flight day on an average. Tighten too much, crush the wood, not enough, loose a screw. Landing gear is soft, even great landings you will have to re-bend every 5 or so landings. (they spread out) I would not recommend this as an entry level 3D plane, useing a 100 or 120 4 stroke It is fast and the surfaces are quick. NICE PRODUCT, by the way I also have a Razzle, there nice also. |
RE: Seagull Models Edge 540
use the silicone washers from world model this prevents canopy screwws from moving - this is an all plane problem - we also tape many of our canopies, best

Has anybody fitted a petrol engine to the seagull 78" edge
I have a mcCullouch 28cc and looking for a home for it. |

How did your plane come out so light with Saito 120 which is 9 oz. heavier than OS 91 FX? Mine weighs in at 8lb 11 oz. Specs are: OS 91 FX W/ Slimline Pitts. 4 Hitec HS625mg, 1 Hitec HS311, 1 Hitec HS645mg 5cell NiMH AA 1800mah Battery No Wheel Pants Spin Right 2 3/4 Aluminum Spinner APC 14x6 Prop |
RE: Seagull Models Edge 540
Don't bother with the 1.08. It's built from a similar case to most folks 1.20 2Cs... .91s are built from .61 cases and are therefore substantially lighter and just about as powerful. |
RE: Seagull Models Edge 540
does anyone know how to get plans for an edge 540.60 series?

Here's a pic of my edge before the epoxy:D
I luv the bling bling stickers. Makes the plane IMHO. The only thing I can comment on aesthetically, is the wheels and wheel pants. The're too small |
RE: Seagull Models Edge 540
ORIGINAL: DUCATI996 At last!!!!!!!!!!!! My Edge is here :D Now I just have to find a way to hide it from the Mrs. :) I know you all have seen the airplane, but I will post some pictures. NOW..........what engine  91FX,Magnum 91/108, what a dilemma. At least I know what radio equipment to buy :D Regards, GL If you find a good place to hide it from the wife please let me know. I just orderd mine and I have a P-47 and a CAP 232 on the work bench and am waiting on my back orderd SU-31 from Tower and the brown truck to bring my VMar trainer ( have a 6 year old son that wants to learn how to fly ) :D I need to stay off this website. |
RE: Seagull Models Edge 540
I got a crashed edge from a friend of mine and finally got some time over the Thanksgiving holiday to finish rebuilding it. I also modified the firewall to accept a YS91. The mod was pretty simple, I just cut the fuselage with a razor saw all the way around the firewall, cleaned off the triangle stock on the inside of the fuse and back of the firewall, I then epoxied the firewall back in flush to the fuselage sides. I put new triangle stock back in and also drilled 1/8" holes and inserted dowel rod around the firewall. Looks good as new and now just about any size engine I want will fit. The problem I have now is the set-up. I don't have a manual for this plane so I have no idea what the throws should be. Would some one please send me the recommended low and high rates and then the rates your using for 3D. I think I read in an earlier post that the CG is 3 1/2" from the leading edge, correct me if I'm wrong. Also, what size spinner do I need?
Thanks |
RE: Seagull Models Edge 540
This is the recomended throws for the Seagull Edge 540
BALANCE POINT IS 3 1/2 BACK FROM THE LEADING EDGE LOW RATE THROWS AILERONS 5/8 UP 1/2 DOWN ELEVATOR 3/4 UP 3/4 DOWN RUDDER 2 1/2 RIGHT & LEFT HIGH RATE THROWS (3D I THINK) AILERONS 1 INCH UP 7/8 DOWN ELEVATOR 1 1/4 UP 1 1/4 DOWN RUDDER 3 1/2 RIGHT & LEFT CAUTION : DO NOT USE THE HIGH RATES (AEROBATIC SETTING) FOR INIAL TEST FLYING OR SPORT FLYING i put a 2 3/4 spinner on mine, the kit spinner I think is 2 1/2 (kinda small) but the 2 3/4 is flush to the front of the cowel. This is per the manual, hope it helps. Do you have any pics of the before and after on the work you did?? I have mine built but haven't got it airborne yet, to busey flying this summer. Also make shure. you put some scrap balsa on the wing cross members, so the bottom of the wing has something to rest on. because when you tighten down the wing it could cause strees to the wing due to the space between the wing and cross member. good luck, and can you post a picture on how you reinforced the fire wall. nedyob |

If he was a REAL friend he would have given you the plane BEFORE he crashed it! :) Jerry |
RE: Seagull Models Edge 540
Hi Guys. I'm seriously considering this airplane. I am wanting to install a Magnum 120 4-stroke engine in her with Hitec 615MG servos and one std. for the throttle. My question is, has anyone recently ordered one of the Edge 540? Have the problems been fixed? Would I be better off going with an Aeroworks Edge .60/.90 size? Please advise. Thanks everybody.

RE: Seagull Models Edge 540
To everyone who has had problems with the Seagull 540, has Horizon done anything about the wing problems?
I am really excited about this plane I NEED ONE! I also have noticed that several of the people that have this Edge also have the Seagull Razzle. How does the razzle compare to this Edge? Which plane is more fun? I have also noticed several other Edges that I am considering. Has anyone had any experience with a company called Vector Flight? http://www.vectorflight.com/default.asp |
RE: Seagull Models Edge 540
RCBOZO - I don't know if the problem has been fixed...I just know Horizon ignored my Email that was sent to them about my wing folding. I will not take a chance on another Seagull Model because of it. The Seagull Razzle flies OK...but I had a lot more fun with a UCD...for one thing, the Razzle does not have enough rudder to hold it in a hover...UCD does not have that problem. No experience about Vector Flight...sorry.
Extra_230 - I like the Aerowork's Edge 60/90 (I'm flying one now)...but can you find one? Aerowork's webpage says they are sold out...same thing on Chief Aircraft's site. I'd like to have another one... |
RE: Seagull Models Edge 540
Hello all, very interesting thread...It seems to me that the wood quality in these arfs is kind of hit and miss. From what I've read about the Edge, and the tail problems with the Seagull/ Graupner Extra 300 (I have one of those, haven't built it yet) and a recent first hand experience with a Razzle, it makes me wonder. I test flew my buddys Razzle the other day, and the whole right side horiz. stab. and elevator ripped off! I had just taken off on the maiden flight, and made 1 circuit when it happened, and never got above 2/3 throttle w/ a TT.61...Lucky for me the Razzle has 2 elev. servos, so I got it back safely! But upon closer examination, the wood in the stab. looked very poor (actually, it was spotty, soft, w/ brown spots) and not something that should be used in a high stress location. I read the whole thread tonight (whew!) and just wanted to add this experience and my opinions. I know my Graupner Extra 300 is the same as the Seagull one, because my lhs has one, and the only difference is the pilot figure (and box label of course)
