Great Planes Tiger Moth experiences ?

ANY ONE HAVE A GP TigerMoth.

I haven't seen any article's, reviews or many postings on this plane.
Has anyone flown this plane ??

This ARF was reviewed in the March 2002 issue of Model Airplane News, and also made it into their top 10 ARF kits later in the year. They liked it.

Also worth checking out the Pacific Aero Models version. Lots of people report good things about this one. My lhs only stocks the Kyosho TM so I think I may go with this version.

Hope this helps.

I've been flying one for about 4 months now. It's a great flying plane. I have a Saito 150 in it, so throttle management is a must. I used this motor so it would swing a scale sized prop... 16" being closest. It's a gentle flying plane with rather limited aerobatic capability. Sure, it'll do what the real one could do, and some rather odd tumbles and inverted spins when pressed, but it's a relaxing flyer.

The only real gripe I had about it was the landing gear, struts and strut mounts. The strut mounts were held to the wings with only one screw, allowing the struts to pivot slightly out of alignment. I've since corrected this by fabricating new mounts that use two screws to hold them to the wings. Also made new struts.

I also installed pull-pull systems on the rudder and elevator, recovered the plane in Nelson fabric, and made a new landing gear that more closely replicates the real thing. LOTS of hours spent making the plane more scale. Would I do it again? Probably not. If I had known about the PA 1/4 scale Moth when I bought the GP Moth, I would have spent the extra $100 and got the PA Moth.

But if fun fly scale is your thing, the GP Moth in it's stock configuration is a great plane... No pun intended!

One of the Pattern flyers in my club has one of these he uses as a relaxing flyer. For engine he used an OS FS-91 mounted inverted with remote glow and it pulls it around in a very scale-like manner. Being a Pattern flyer he sometimes does fly it outside of the scale envelope doing inverted low passes full throttle down the runway.

He seems to bring it to the field quite often too and I believe he is happy with it.

If I was going to have one I would rather see the top surfaces in a camouflage theme with the underside left yellow. (This is a scale color scheme!) The all yellow is a bit much for me. :D

flew mine with a Saito .91, flew great, fun plane, especially in the wind, it would take off and land itself in about 2 feet.

I got to land mine with just one wheel today... Twice! Fortunately the wind was blowing on the lakebed, and I was pretty much able to helicopter it in both time. I must have got a bad batch of wheel collars. Hmm... Do they make bad wheel collars?

No wind would have proved quite embarrassing, I'm sure. :)

How does the Tiger Moth Handle wind?
Our field is usually 10 to 12 Knot winds 10 to 20 degrees off center of runway.

In a crosswind, it crabs a bit, adding to the realism. 10 to 12 knots is not bad though... Now at 15+, it is still flyable, and crosswinds are managable, though you might have a problem turning it around on the ground as it likes to weathervane.

10 to 20 degrees would be hardly noticeable. It's the 90 degree crosswinds that are somewhat challenging. Fortunately it's a stable plane.

Saturday I think we had 25+, and it was still flyable.

If it can handle 25 knot winds, then 12 knots should be mild. I saw one fly at our field.

The larger wing at 71" inches allowed for a slower more scale like flight. It looked great.

Well, I'm not saying the wind has no effect on it, but you can still fly it, it just gets pushed around a bit. :) All that lift in the wind is sometimes not a good thing.

Yeah, they do look good puttin' around the sky... Especially those low, slow flybys.

Thanks for the reply.

Having the plane pushed around a bit is not a problem. Flipping over with the slightest breeze is a big problem. The tiger moth sounds like it will handle the type of wind we have. If it's a gusty high wind day, I would fly a different plane.

The trick I use that might interest you to keep your wheels from falling off is this. I always cut the axle to have about 1/8th of an inch sticking out from the wheel collar. I then cut a slice of fuel tubing 1/8th of an inch wide and slip this on the axle after the wheel collar. If you want to be even more secure put a spot of Ca on the axle and tubing. In the event you want to get it off later you can cut it off with a razor blade.

Thanks for the tip, HR. I use 4" DuBro inflatable Big Wheels, and until last weekend, ran the collars inside with never a loss. Transporting the plane intact in the back of my truck, I had a problem with the bed lid pressing down on the top wing and compressing it about an inch, so I decided quick removal of the wheels was in order to cure that problem. On the gear I made, I left enough axle to mount a collar externally if need be, so fuel hose is out of the question, as is CA.

I'd like to just put a real cap screw in the collar, but I don't know what thread size is in the 3/16" collars. Any clue?

Thanks,

Dave

Is it still "stock"? Any crashes? Many flights? How much?

I know what you mean about it being cool flying with others... My brother has a GP Tripe, and we fly around together. Every once in a while, when both 4 stroke motors get into sync, it actually sounds like a squadron.

Well that's certainly an eyecatching color scheme!

So, what are you asking? Want to trade it for a GP Fabric covered Cub?

Pinhead159 12-19-2002 04:06 AM

as for trades i am open to anything, especially looking for gas engines of any size right now, g23 +, or anything else. not into cubs, ust got rid of one. planes, kits, etc. what else u got to trade? as for asking price i ahven't though about it b/c i just took engine off not long ago and haven't thought about price. you can email me if u want so we don't clutter up their thread. make me an offer in price if u want

I HAVE ONE .....LOVE ..HATE..THING..GOOD LOOKING ..NICE ARF KIT......POWERED BY SAITO 91....SWEET IN THE AIR......A BEAR TO LAND.....I BELIEVE THE CG IS WRONG...I BALANCED BY THE BOOK WITH A CG METER..ADDED 3/4 LB LEAD TO FIRE WALL.. IT BALANCED LEVEL.......FLYING WAS GREAT ...HANDLED NICE..I AM A SPORT/SLOW FLYER...I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE A NICE ADD TO MY COLLECTION.........IT IS A BEAR TO LAND....!.....AFTER THE SECOND CRASH IT WILL SIT ON MY BENCH FOR A WHILE...THE REPAIR WILL BE EXTENSIVE..BOTH WINGS ARE IN SEVERAL PIECES,AND THE FIRE WALL IS RIPPED OUT......NOT AS STRONGLY CONSTRUCTED AS A GOOD HOME BUILT KIT........I LOVE THE LOOKS BUT AM A BIT DISSAPOINTED.........MOTH EATEN BILL

GP Tiger Moth Question

On the GP Tiger Moth. Is the landing gear attached to the bottom wing or to the fuselage

Damnathius 08-28-2003 10:28 PM

The gear is attached to the fuselage only.
