China Flyboy Models
After looking at these aircraft and reading everything I could find on it ,I went ahead and bought a Edge 540.
Needless to say I was skeptical ,but what the heck it's only money right . 7 days from when I bought it to delivery on the doorstep.not to bad i'm thinking .So I unbox the thing (its double boxed BTW )And what I saw shocked the heck out of me .There was a extremely nice aircraft all packed in plastic bags for each part.Sheeted foam covered wings and what appears to be ultra coat covering .But that i'm not sure of.Theres not a wrinkle one in any of the covering. The plane seemed to be well built strong and light, things like the firewall is keyed into the fuse sides and also has tri stock to help support it .The Hardware is another story,on a plane of this size I doubt if I will use much of it. All and all the shipping is high ,but the plane was low ,I doubt if I could buy a kit for what I paid for this ARF . I'm a builder by heart and average 10-12 planes each year .So I have a fair idea of what to look for in high stress areas and so on . As soon as I get some time and the table freed up i'll put this together , I'll be back to give a flight report on it .If it flies as good as it looks I think I have a winner . Happy Landings ! |

RE: China Flyboy Models
China is tuff to beat!
I have two planes from CMP (Zero, Super Chipmunk) and i am amazed at the quality! Not only the planes are build straight, but the covering quality is amazing!!!! i could not do 1/2 the job they've done. seriously. my hat... to all the Chinese (prisoners?) who make these models & make a dollar a day... the only problem i can see is that China will eventually take over the business of the world, despite efforts from the US & European Union to do something about it. so untill we get "poor & hungry" we might as well enjoy it and buy as many " good&cheep" ARFs as we can ;) |
RE: China Flyboy Models
One thing is for sure....the Chinese are very hard workers. I sure hope the rich ones over there do not take advantage of workers like the rich do here and many other countries. Capt,n P.S. It would be interesting to know how mutch $$$ is made each time these ARF planes changes hands on the way here[:o]

RE: China Flyboy Models
that sleer is actually very good , has a very good reputation , I have him saved in my favorite sellers list , at one time he had a nice F15 prop jet but I cant seem to find it at this time

RE: China Flyboy Models
Ok here the low down on the Edge 540,I finally got around to putting it together and flying it .
1.The covering is not ultra coat its a low temp that doesn't like the sun at all . 2.The instructs are vague but theres enough to assemble the model if a person has had some previous building experience. 3. One of the wings has a 2 degree twist that I will have to live with ,A sheeted wing is very stiff and I don't think I can twist it back with the covering . 4. I powered the plane with a YS 120 SF 16/8 Graphner ,2 futaba 3004 on the elevators,645 mg hitect for the rudder and ailerons. After mounting the engine I checked it with a meter ,it had 3 degrees downthrust .Since they do not say anything about this I made shims to get the engine back to 0 degrees to match the wings and stab . 5.With the YS in the nose the model was in the CG range but leaned to wards the nose heavy side ,I figured for the first few flights I would just let it ride . After a few taxi runs up and down the runway to check the tracking and finished dialing in the engine It was ready for the maiden . I added some throttle the plane tracked straight with little or no rudder until I reached full throttle and lifted off .I reached a safe altitude and eased off the sticks to find the plane wanted to go to the left (Twisted WING )so I trimmed it out and added just a little trim to the elevator for level flight and back it off to around half throttle just to see how this plane was going to fly ,did a few rolls loops and minor stunts ,nothing major . Then the time came do do the mandatory maneuver the landing .The plane slows down very nice with no tendency to snap or drop a wing I was very pleased with this . After doing a little more dialing in on the engine I felt it was time to see what this plane had . Takeoff was the same a no brainer ,Knife edge to the left was almost rudder only ,the right has some coupling issues but can be held without to much trouble.Axial rolls are straight and quick ,loops are tight and straight both outside and inside . Blenders are very nice ,the plane stops on a dime after centering the sticks . Both upright and inverted flat spins are a breeze .All and all this plane flys well .After I get the weight transfered more to the rear I will try some advanced 3-D ,as advanced as I can do that is *LOL* Misses . 1.The covering 2.instructs 3.Wheel pants and cowl are very light but they are fiberglass 4.Firewall was built with downthrust 5.The pushrods was not to be used on a model of this size For the money even if I have to recover the plane I don't think I went wrong ,A kit of this size would cost me more than what it did even with the new covering . |
RE: China Flyboy Models
Hello,Capt'Wolf; After I have read your thread it make me feel better now because I 've just bought a Edge 540,74" Flyboy models and have no idea how it going to be about quality wise and will see after I open the box. I have two of Edge 540,66" on both but one is 540T from pacific aero model [but this one is history, pieces due to loss control]and the other is 540 from Vectorflight but they are out of buss. When I got my airplane and start building if I run into the problem I might need some advise from Capt'. if you don't mind,O.K sir .See you next time after I build this plane. Thanks.
P.S It has a real 74" wingspan or not really? because they always give you a big figure all the time in my experience with Chinese models. |
RE: China Flyboy Models
I just got a new P47 off of ebay , but for the life of me I cant tell who makes it , it was sold ny a Ebay seller named- mkland-- won the bid at $67 , plus $45 shipping . Had the plane in 5 days . Its a bubble style all silver with red on the cowl and tail , free retracts , well lets just say there free lol , I wont use them . Fiberglass fuse and cowl . Not bad at all just cant tell on this plane what supplier , its not a CMP or a Wills hobbies .
It has two sets of wheels --really wierd light weight "blue wheels " yes blue ? and a nice light weight pair of black wheels .Go figure ;) |

[ P.S It has a real 74" wingspan or not really? because they always give you a big figure all the time in my experience with Chinese models. ]
Yes actually its 74 1/2 " if you have the same plane as I do its blue and yellow. What engine do you plan to use? [mkland] Is the same seller where I purchaced my plane from .I asked who made the planes and I was told China Flyboy Models they are a new company trying to get known here in the US . |
RE: China Flyboy Models
Hi;Capt' Wolf ; Yes,it is the same seller and same color as yours [ Blue and Yellow by looking at the pix ] I hope he will send me the same color like in the pix. I will use O.S 120S which came off from Pacific Edge 540T [the one loss control and smashed] what do you think Capt'? I don't know the different of the weight between YS 120 and O.S 120 surpass it may be very close I hope,
LDM ,I also have two P-51 from CMP 68" and using Sato 150 it flies so good but a little over power because it has fiberglass fuse and it heavier than balsa I think, and the other one call EVER GREEN from Raiden Tech.com [65"] Loss in the jungle due to wing came apart during took off and began a bank turned. The dowel was broken off. But so far The Chinese models seem to be O.K like The World Model I love their product and they are the top knot of quality wise.I hope my Flyboy Edge 540 will do the same. Thanks again Capt'Wolf for info and will let you know about my Edge 540 ,74" Aroon. |
RE: China Flyboy Models
Capt' Wolf; I forgot to ask you about the wings ,it has two pcs.wings w/ aluminium tube or one pc.wing w/ wood wing joiner? but by the pix. I saw two small tubes at the wing which attaches the fuse, I like two pcs wing myself it's easy to carry around. Is landing gear strong enough and how the 540 looks after finished, could you please show the complete pix. Thanks

RE: China Flyboy Models
There is a alum tube wing joiner and some wing nuts that hold the wing in place ,it runs through a glass tube in the fuse .Not a bad set up by any means .My 120 OS pumped is a tad bit lighter than the 120 YS 2-3 oz I think I have not been able to get my engine dialed in quite the way I want it yet but it still hauls the plane around good .Vertical is not unlimited but a prop change will help that .Good luck :-) !!!!!!!!!!!

RE: China Flyboy Models
wolf , thats interesting so I now own a Flyboy model lol , the quality is good but the cowl is much thinner then the "willshobbies " however willshobbies has such a language barrier that you really cant ask questions or get an answer to seriuos concerns . I bought a seafury from Newyork grace /willshobbies , no rails for the retracts so its a major wing bash .
For the price you cant go wrong with a flyboy , its worth the small work needed to get it up to par |
RE: China Flyboy Models
Hi; cyberwolf;I got the airplane finally,it's a good looking one I like it for the size but after inspected all around and I did not see the distance from the firewall to the back of the spinner because I will use O.S 120 surpass for the power house. What is your distance from firewall to the back of spinner? and I found two pieces of square shape of wood they look like for the engine mount and attach to the firewall isn't it? Please let me ,I'm just curious before I started it. Thanks
|
RE: China Flyboy Models
Yes I had forgot about that ,the 2 pieces of wood go on the top to help hold the FW in place .Add them after the throttle wire and tank is completed otherwise there in the way .
What I did for length was to measure the cowl length ,by setting it spinner end up on a table and measuring thru the hole. Then I subtracted 1/2"and came up with 9 inches for a reference . That gave me approx 5/8" overlap on the FW for mounting . Just for kicks and extra strength I added some extra support to the FW It maybe dosent need it ,but I don't like the thought of it giving at all. What prop are you going to use .I'm waiting as I type this for a 160 OS to replace the 120 YS I have in the plane now . |

RE: China Flyboy Models
Capt.Wolf. Thanks for info. I used a pc.of wood w/ the hole for support FW. [ by the pix ] ,almost done now and I will use 15x8 prop.for my O.S 120 surpass. I ran into a problem w/ the hatch it won't fit right and I can't screw them down the blind nut is a little bit too deep and not line up,I have to try it again after than that it's doing great and balancing somewhere between spec. I mount the engine inverted like two of my Saitos 150 and 91 it should works O.K[ I hope]. It weigh around 9 lbs.total and how about yours ? I will let you know about flying. [ I flew my Vector flight Edge 540 66" yesterday and hoping this flyboy would fly nice like this one ]
Thanks again. See you. |
RE: China Flyboy Models
Hatch ???Oh your talking about the fuse top cover I took there blind nuts out and tossed um away and used some 6-32 that I had on hand .Mine didn't line up so hot either .I weighed that plane but can't remember now what it was .seems like 8-9 lbs was in the ball park.
MY 120 OS swings a 15x8 also works good for the plane its in ,but I dunno about that edge I use a 16x8 with my YS 120 and its in need of more engine .But I am going to try a prop change first The graupner swings hard so I will put a APC on it and give it a go.Static RPM gain is about 5-600 that may be enough ,if not my new engines on the bench . Happy landings . |
RE: China Flyboy Models
Finally ,I got her first maiden flight today morning, after filled her up and it won' t start and found the remote glow cable came off and using manual glow starter instead. After checked all functions see they are OK. and I taxied her around and she looked good for ground handling,I added more throttle until got max speed and I applied elevator then she lift off beautifully,I made a left turn checked level flight I noticed that she started to climb then I gave a few clicks of down elevator and two clicks of left aeleron and now she flew very nice. I have tried the loops, inverted and rolls it 's a great flying airplane and very stable. Now the time for landing she floated in nicely and smooth touch down and one of friend of mine he stood behind me because of first maiden flight and he said it's a perfect landing I turned her around and brought her to stopped in front of me. I am very pleased w/ this airplane ,thanks for flyboy and hopefully they're making Sukhoi and Yak so I will be the first customer.Thank you for all info and made me decided to buy this nice airplane.Talk to you later.Bye.
