RE: Super Skybolt ARF
could you please post a link to the checkerboard that matches the bottom covering on our Skybolts?
all i could find is the sticky trim that is 5" wide by 36" long strips..............checks are only 1/2" x 1/2" ORIGINAL: damifino Monokote makes the red and white checkerboard. Tower or your LHS has it. |
RE: Super Skybolt ARF
Here is the reply I got from Great Planes.
I'm sorry, but the checkerboard pattern on the bottom of the wing is not Monocot. In fact, it's actually a factory sourced covering that our overseas manufacturer put applied to the bottom wing. We don't carry the exact same checkerboard pattern material. If you need to make a repair you could use Monocot covering, cut the size of the damaged are or Top Flite Trim Sheets. Sorry people we have been had again by China |

I believe [link=http://ecsvr.com/abm/ShopDisplayproducts.asp?page=2]THIS[/link] is a match.
The "ToughLon STL412 - 1" checker (Ferrari red/white)" |
RE: Super Skybolt ARF
The squares on our wigs are 1 9/16 by 1 9/16 no one has that size that I can find, looks like I will use white and cut my own squares from the closest color matching covering. I am leaving this morning for Perry GA show so I will investigate it more there.

RE: Super Skybolt ARF
No luck at the Show, but i did get a close math to the color ULTRACOTE Flame Red while i was there

RE: Super Skybolt ARF
Ouch...
Must remember; DO NOT puncture or damage wings on Skybolt... ---- BTW: I have an OS Surpass FS .91 in mine as recommended. I moved the battery forward and still find it difficult to move the C.G. into the recommended range w/o resorting to additional weight. Anyone fly this plane with the C.G. at 5-5 1/4"? (about where the rear most screw is that holds the top wing joint on?). Results if so? |
RE: Super Skybolt ARF
I just got my Super Skybolt ARF and I saw your video. It loos like the OS 91 hauls it around pretty good. I'm very familiar with ARFs and I've always stripped the material from the center section, glassed it and recovered it. Now I wouldn't do this to the top wing on my Skybolt because I'm concerned about the looks of my plane, but would you recommend glassing the center section of the bottom wing?

RE: Super Skybolt ARF
ORIGINAL: damifino If I can get it posted you'll see it here. I am just now getting back to working on my skybolt and would love to see how much SMOKE your pump put's out ????? Signed Mr.FlyBye |
RE: Super Skybolt ARF
Though not the Skybolt, here is the same pump on an Ultimate with an O.S. Surpass III Pumped 1.20.
I have exactly the same setup on my Skybolt ARF with an O.S. 91 Surpass III There is no pre-heater, etc. involved. Excuse the lousy camera phone picture. http://image2.rcuniverse.com/gallery...5/lg-96652.jpg I get gobs of smoke on both. This with a 4.8v battery on the pump. Too much oil and the muffler cools down too much.. so usually the pump only needs to run at about 50%-60% of max. The muffler also tended to cool in flight so I took a page from Miniflyer and wrapped the muffler with fiberglass and tape. Later I found that several layers of duct tape alone worked just as well and looked much better. |
RE: Super Skybolt ARF
The duct tape didn't burn off? Cool!
|
RE: Super Skybolt ARF
Nope. Not so far.
I put many wraps of duct tape around the central core. At the hardware store I asked about using it on the heat exhaust flue, so that they would give me an applicable answer. |
RE: Super Skybolt ARF
THANKS for the photo it looks like that pump puts out lots of smoke .What type of smoke oil or home brew are you useing ???
Nice looking plane by the way [sm=thumbup.gif] |
RE: Super Skybolt ARF
That's DRI smoke oil... it does a nice job.
The real deal before the addition of the smoke pump... http://www.knifeedge.com/forums/down...282%29_jr8.jpg And the G3 version http://www.knifeedge.com/forums/down...te12088409.jpg |
RE: Super Skybolt ARF
Hi Damifino did you ever get some video of youre smoker after they sent it back Repaired ??? |
RE: Super Skybolt ARF
Made smoke with the Skybolt today! Lots of smoke. Works and looks awesome. My 6oz tank is not nearly enough so I'll be exploring ways to increase capacity to around 12 oz. Also thinking about making smaller the hole on the smoke oil nipple into the exhaust header. I've tried everything I know to do via my computer radio to get the flow just right but I'm still not satisfied with the flow.. Works very good though this early in the smoking experience.
|
RE: Super Skybolt ARF
I just installed a 12oz...
Trust me, it's not BIG enough! |
RE: Super Skybolt ARF
I saw a simple smoke system at the LHS today, a Dubro servo controled pinch valve that used engine pressure to pump the smoke fluid. Has anyone tried this and/or does it work.
|
RE: Super Skybolt ARF
I am new to smoke systems, just did my first one in a skybolt also. I have a 10oz. oil tank and it does go fast, well I assume about 7 or 8 minutes worth of smoke.
bgold, I just used the windshield washer pump and then bought the check valve and oil/fuel lines, and I am using a needle valve for the restricter and the check valve. I think I have about $30.00 total in it and it works great. A lot cheeper than buying the smiple smoker and really the same thing. |
RE: Super Skybolt ARF
7 or 8 minutes of smoke is a lot.
What you have to remember is, you don't want to run smoke constantly - if you do, you'll only get 7 or 8 minutes worth (Obviously) Turn it on, do a loop, turn it off. Come around again, turn it on, do a low pass, turn it off. So Smoke should be used as a special effect, not something that is run throughout the flight. When you do it this way, the smoke is only on for about 1/4 of the flight. 7 minutes times 4 = 28 minutes That is a LONG flight! So 7 minutes is MORE than enough time |
RE: Super Skybolt ARF
Yeah I'm lucky to get 2-3 minutes, and that is almost enough for my typical 16 minute flights.
Miniflyer: The duct tape is still holding up. I noticed that a bit of the adhesive initially oozed out, but it wasn't very much. I have a dozen flights on it this way. Many wraps of tape should do the trick. It looks a heck of a lot better too. |
RE: Super Skybolt ARF
1 Attachment(s)
After many months on the table I finally finished my Super Skybolt ARF.
YS 110 for power, Graupner 3-blade prop, Tru Turn Spinner, Sig small tailwheel assembly, and custom gear by TNT with Sullivan three inch Skylite wheels. Hitec 5625 Digitals all around with 6 volts of juice. Carbon rods for the aileron interconnects (half the weight of the solid rod). The landing gear changes make the model sit two inches higher than stock but at approximately the same angle of attack. The C.G. came out perfectly level at the rear most balance point (5.0 inches), but this still seems a tad nose heavy. Final weight is 9.05 pounds. Love the aerobatic performance and slow flight handling! Mike |
RE: Super Skybolt ARF
Well guys, it's time for a comment. [ After all, I'm the one who started this post well over a year ago ] I had an opportunity to buy another Skybolt only this one is a kit-built. Yup, the ARF version and kit are as different as night and day. This kit was made by an old fellow getting out of the hobby and let it go for $75 bucks. It's all built, ready to cover but it sure is'nt anything like the ARF. I'll get this camera figured out and start posting some photo's. One last thing to say, " what in the hell did I need a second one for "? Seeya's later, MM

RE: Super Skybolt ARF
Geeze, a Skybolt built from a Kit for $75???!!!
What a deal!!!! |
RE: Super Skybolt ARF
Hey guys,
I noticed a couple of posted guys had mentioned moving the battery to the nose. How and where are you moving the battery to exactly? |
RE: Super Skybolt ARF
With the C.G. at the recommended but aftmost location the Skybolt still is nose heavy.
You shouldn't have to move the battery to the nose. However in attempting to hit the recommended C.G. I did move it forward. I cut 4 small oval holes in the angled part of the wood just behind the firewall... ( where the air exhaust is for the cowl bottom ). I then placed some double sided sticky tape on the battery and slid it in behind the firewall and secured it with wire ties through the holes. The battery sits in the inside of the fuselage on the angled wooden area. To release the battery I merely need to cut the wire ties. |
