CG Ultimate Bipe ARF experience
After crashing my first Ultimate that was from a kit I went out and bought the ARF version. The ARF goes together fairly quick with a few little improvements along the way, but overall if I munch this one I would not hesitate to buy another. I took care of a weak area in the way the top wing is bolted down which was easy to do and the ailerons were actually about 1/16" too long. That was just cosmetic and no one has really noticed. I fly mine with a YS .91 and had to mount the rudder servo behind the rear cockpit former and installed 2 elevator servos under the stab. These changes were made for more direct control and also helped with balancing the model.
Also, the plane is covered in 1 solid color so you'll need to trim it out with another color or two but overall, of all the planes I have this Ultimate is the one I seem to take out more than any other. As long as you put it together straight and give it enough power you'll love it! :D |

I'm on my second CG ARF. The first one went in due to a batt failure. Seven days later I flew the second one. I absolutely love this plane! It is a great ARF version of the kit. The field assembly is a bit better due to the cabane pin being replaced with bolts and a plate. I also added some strength to this area. I thought the gear was a bit thin and rigged a reinforcement made from the gear of the first plane. Otherwise glue the tail in straight and seal the hinge lines and fly. It goes together that fast. I also agree on the color. Adding some yellow stripes under the wing or something would be nice to help with orientation. It is an incredible aerobat that just happens to be stable in all flight modes.

Hey Dan & Tailtwister....
I'm just starting to build one of these ARF's and would like to know just exactly what you did to beef up the top wing center support. I don't need that thing commin' off in the middle of a flight. Thanks, Randy |

I just used some thinned epoxy to sure up thr glue joint. I used a straw to get it in there. Then I used that same epoxy to glue down a slightly larger washer directly to the top of the ply plate. Another suggestion I have is to forget the short bolts for the top center wing attachment. Get some 1 inch bolts and it goes together a bit easier.

For about the same price, maybe a couple dollars more, you can get a Dave Patrick Ultimate. The difference between these planes is night and day. With the Goldberg, if the engine quits, the plane pretty much falls out of the sky, whereas the DP will glide quite nicely. It's a bigger plane, and needs more motor, but it sure flies a lot better. I couldn't believe that the Goldberg was selling when I saw the difference in price. The Patrick is such a better deal!

RMORGAN,
As far as the top wing mounting method goes, when I first started flying the model I did not beef-up the top wing mounting area and it held up okay but reinforcing the mounting points sure makes securing the wing a better feeling deal. To take care of mine I actually center drilled 2 pieces of wood dowel for the hold down bolts to pass through and glued the dowel pieces to the mounting plate in the wings. Dan |

Dan & tailtwister,
Thanks very much for your input. Both ideas seem worth the modest effort. Randy |

For a Bipe my Goldberg glides quite well. I have no experience with the Patrick Bipe. I've had probably 6 or 8 deadstick landings with this plane and never felt rushed to the runway due to a poor glide. Just keep the nose down, call it for the other pilots, and fly to the field. If you bring the nose up, yes it will slow drastically. Resist flairing until you are only a few inches off the ground. KEEP THE NOSE DOWN. I've even done a roll on the downwind totally deadstick. It's not as bad as you might think.
