Paula

.Paula,I have 2 of the TH trainers RTF and 1 Avistar.
All three came with the 40 OS engine.
Everyone else I know that has a TH trainer has a OS 40 engine on it.
It's stamped on right side of the engine looking at the front and a owners book from OS comes with it :)
Don't worry.
That trainer you just ordered will do more then circles.
You can loop, roll, and although you can't do an outside loop you'll have fun watching it do a hammer head stall trying :D
BTW,
Lot of others say it can't be done but you can loop and do 360 turns at the same time.
Takes time to do it but it can be done

Yeah I got the free servo, forgot to post that.
The case is for the transmitter. I figured for that price it couldn't hurt. Plus too, needed somewhere to keep when not out flying.
A guy that works with my hubby got 2 55 gallon drums of fuel from a place closing due to the death of the owner. So I am going to get fuel form him since he will sell it to us at his cost.
As far as the Super Saver Club, hubby decided to join it because they said if you don't save the cost of joining they will give you gift certicates for the price of the club. So hubby said we can't lose.
I will make sure to check the controls & measure the throws. Thanks.
Can't wait to get it & head out to the field. This is something I have wanted to do for many years but never took the leap. LOL

Paula

OK *U*
Looked like a funny face of some kind.
Well,
from reading this post it looks like your all set to go.
Just gotta wait for the package to arrrive.
I told TH not to ship mine until Monday because they bounce boxes around on the weekend.
I'd rather have them keep it bouncing this way :)
They pack them good though.
Don't forget to keep us posted and remember that can also be converted to a tail dragger

Since I am new to this, I am not sure what a tail dragger is exactly. I mean other than the tail drags when you land I guess. I have never seen one so I am not sure what to expect. See, told you I was a newbie. *Ü*

Taildragger

Paula,
Most trainers are tri-cycle landing gear planes, 3 wheels upfront, nose wheel turns to steer plane, usually coupled to the rudder control. Taildragger's have 2 wheels up front, and a small tail wheel on the tail, that is usually attached to the rudder in some fashion. This means that the plane pivots on the 2 front wheels, and the tail swings around.

The one I got has a .46 engine in it, so guess they are putting bigger engines in them now.
I will really be able to do more than fly in circles with this plane? Wow!!!! Tha is fantastic.
Sorry for my previous typos, I need to re-read my posts. LOL
A loop & 360 at the same time? Wow, I can't wait to get it & learn to do all these neat things. Maybe my poor plane will survive my learning. LOL

Try not to get discouraged if it doesn't survive. I had a couple, so called hard landings, but I learned all about the virtues of epoxy, and the ol' Avistar is still flying, with skis currently.

.Paula,
The smaller wheel also reduces drag from the big noise wheel hanging out up front doing nothing.
Also takes some load off the rudder servo.
You have the 46 engine and shorter and thinner wings then the Airstrike so it has to be faster since my other Super Star Select 40 with a 46 engine will do 55 MPH :D

NC56er,
Hey Paula, I hope I can get my girlfriend to buy a plane too.....Her Dad is the CD for IMAC events at our field. Don't know why she hasn't yet. She did just buy me a little cub to play with. I think you made a great choice with the Tower package. I've been doing business with them since '86 or '87. The Tower Trainer flys very well, bought one for my friend last Christmas, but the kit version, don't be afraid to build the kit version for a great intro in building, but be aware that after the cost of the kit, and all the stuff you'll need to finish it, it will end up costing more than an ARF. But, its an investment in a great hobby and pasttime, so I don't worry about the 10's of thousands that I have already spent, and with this great forum, you can trade the stuff you don't use anymore. Anyway, Tower is a great place to do business with, and so is Quantum Models. Horizon is good too, but there isn't much of their brands that I like. Chief Aircraft is great too, and the focus on bigger stuff. Someone should print these dislikes and mail them to the club president/hobby store owner. He needs to loosen up a little, and if he does, he will end up with more happy customers in the long run. Just a pointer for the Tower airplane, the main landing gear flexed a whole lot, so to reduce bouncing around, I helped my friend put a homemade brace midway across the left and right legs. We just took a piece of pushrod wire and made a small bend at both ends to fit the angle of the landing gear, and fastened it with a couple of wheel collars that would fit over the two wires. Costs about 2 bucks and worth its weight in gold. Another great piece of equipment worth its weight in gold ( I have 2) is the Accucycle form Tower Hobbies/Hobbico. Its about 80 bucks + 10 for the wires......Seems like a lot at first, but it conditions your batteries, and with a full discharge and an automatic timed charge, you can get readings on your batteries storage capacity, and you won't ever overcharge or undercharge your batteries. I've blown up a few battery packs and one radio before because I forgot to unplug the charger....and I have seen people undercharge their batteries and stuff (crash) their airplanes. I'm not trying to scare you, just trying to give you advice that will make this hobby easier to enjoy. Happy Flying!
Ernie

Ernie,
Thanks for the advice. I will try the landing gear info, thanks.
I feel much better about getting the Tower Hobbies Trainer RTF. Since this was my first plane, I was afraid to try & build one so I went for the RTF. I do plan to build or at least partially build my next plane. By then I figure I will have seen several planes & will have read lots of info here on the forums to give me the help & insight I will need.
When I placed my order for the plane it was on back order but I got an email tonight saying it was shipped! I am so excited!
I was hoping to get a flight simulator to help me get used to the controls but they are so expensive. So I thought hopefully with a trainers help, I can learn to fly & put the flight simulator money to getting my next plane & maybe a better radio. Do I sound like I am getting addicted? LOL
Again, thanks so much for your advice & insight.

Used Simulators

Hi Paula,

Have you checked out RCUniverse under "for sale" to see if anyone is selling off their software....could be a whole lot more reasonable....

I made the investment and it saved money, in my opinion, because there have been, knock on wood, no accidents... :D

It truely is expensive...our local store has a demo I was able to play with for 30 mins before they chased me off... :p

I have a Tower RTF 40 Trainer now. My son brought it home after finding it in a trash pile. It had never been started, the motor is brand new. At first I could not start it, then apon close examination I determined that no fuel was getting to the engine, due to a solid (no passage) section in the factory installed fuel line! I can only imagine the fustration factor of it's original owner...perhaps he has taken up golf now.

I don't remeber where I saw the sign but it said GET OUT AND STAY OUT!.
As little as 10 years ago no one needed a computer to learn how to fly a trainer.
I can see it now in the next few years.
Honey,Do you still love me?
Hubby: I don't know right now.
I need uo upgrade my software before I can say for sure

Hi Whirley Bird,

I am guessing from your post you don't like simulators....

I can't think of a better way to learn cross-wind landings, or practice patterns in the dead of winter.... :D

We all have our methods and opinions, but the hobby is a great one....and anyway you do it is just fun....

Cappie

PS: I had a nice chinese dinner with my wife and kids, played in the evening, and when the house was quite....did some inverted practice in a super sportster....

Come to think of it, its work that keeps me away from the family :p

Trainers?

Paula:

Hands down...You can't go wrong with the Hangar 9 Alpha RTF. It has a Eveloution .40 engine that is already broken in and ready to fly so you do not have to break-in a new engine. The plane is great!!! It is perfect for a new pilot...No bad flying tendencies. It comes with a installed Futaba Radio and all the linkages are pre-set at the factory. I own a Tower Hobbies .46ABC which is an excellent engine; However, it took quiet a bit of tuning to get the seetings from a consistent idle to full throtle, where as the eveloution engine is ready to fly out of the box.
The most important thing to consider when buying a arf trainer is to have an experienced rc pilot assist you in your quest to solo.

Good Luck...Glad to see more females showing interest!! My fiance' has been flying with me for two years now.

To set the record straight, The Hangar 9 Alpha package does not come with a Futaba radio, it comes with a JR. Depending on the most popular radios at someone's field, I would use that to help base my decision on which radio I would prefer to have in my airplane. Next, the Evo. .40 engine is a sport engine, and doesn't offer the flexibility of reusing it in the 2nd or 3rd airplane down the road as much as the .46 BB which probably put out 75% more Hp. and while the Tower engine is not broken-in, what better way to learn break-in and tuning than now. Every engine I had ever bought has been more and more expensive. Sure would be a shame to ruin an engine because no one ever showed you how to break one in when you were learning the ropes, besides its not that big a deal if your nice to people, and get help in return. That 3 blade prop on that .40 suffers trying to deliver thrust, better off with a 2 blade 10-6. The rest, the airframe is pretty similar. Keep in mind, while Horizon and Tower are both great companies in general to deal with, they are competitors, so don't put so much faith in the hype.
