Quantum Models vs. Morris

I have read all the threads on VQ models and everyone is saying buy them from Morris Hobbies and my question is that I found the full line of VQ models at Quantum Models with the same ads and same pictures of the aircraft as Morris Hobbies and the only difference was price. 180 at Quantum vs. 200 at Morris hobbies.
I haven't done business with either as yet, so I have nothing against either place. Just like to have input from others. I have limited funds and want to make sure I buy my plane from a good source.

Also I'm new to flying, just now going from my trainer to my second plane. I want to fly warbirds, but should I start with say an AT6, T34 or just go ahead and get a Zero, P51 etc. for my second plane.

Thanks

Morris Hobbies is the exclusive distributor of VQ in North America, so Quantum buys their VQ planes straight from Morris. This does not mean that they won't sell VQ planes for less than Morris though... Morris on the other hand will have the best inventory and latest stock. VQ has been consistently upgrading their models. The latest batch of warbirds were priced a bit higher due to the fact that they now come with both pre-installed retracts and oleo struts which probably explains the difference in price.

I have not purchased VQ but I have ordered from quantum many times with no problems. You should allways call or e mail to check stock though. I have had orders sit waiting to ship on 1 item but if you request, they ship what they have

I have recently placed a few big orders with Quantum. Free shipping is great and I have been very pleased with their quick service.

Quantum is my other "major" online supplier after Tower... acutally i am getting more stuff for them (and cancelled my Tower subscription).. they have good service a quick e-mail will tell you if the model you seek i s in the store.
For such a price difference I would shop Quantum any day :)

I too have use Quantum Models for a number of orders now. I would not hesitate to recommend buying from them. Great prices, a good product line and free shipping.

Only suggestion I would make is to email them to see if the item you want is in stock, as their website doesn't show stock status.

I have always received an extremely quick reply from Carla to my emails with answers to all of my questions.

If Quantum had everything I needed, I would never order from anyone else.

I've used both, and have been very happy with both. If the price difference is 10% plus a difference in shipping cost...

I'd go to Quantum for the VQ.

Thanks

Thanks to all that replied to my question, this is really a big help to me. I just finished emailing Quantum to check to see if the plane I'm interested in is in stock. Once again thanks!!

As to the 2nd half of your question: Go with the AT-6 etc if this is only your 2nd plane. Getting a a true fighter is asking for trouble due to increased wing loading and flying speed. (The flaps versions will let you land slower though.)
Planes like the AT-6 would be a nice transition and still be a scale war time plane.

Razor-RCU 01-25-2003 06:51 AM

Concur with Archer-

I am flying a GP AT-6 Texan arf with a Saito 65- It floats in on landing, and I mean that in a good way...

I have flown P-51's of different sizes and a couple Zero's, I even have a GP Spitfire ARF ** None of which flew/flies as easily and smoothly as the Texan**

What size are you looking at? What motor do you have or are going to have :D ?

Remember the "AT" in AT-6 means advanced trainer- and was designed to be more forgiving than the P-51's and what-not.

Search "Second plane" on here for a ton of info.

Let us know when you make your purchase if you have any set-up questions because whatever plane you choose, there will be a dozen folks on here with the same plane or set-up for advice!

Good luck and keep up that airspeed on final-

james

Thanks Razor and Archer, The AT6 was the one I was leaning towards purchasing if not a T34. Looks like I will probably go with the GP AT6 40 size to start with, and I have a couple of 46fx engines and one TT 75. Thanks for the help.

All of the VQ 40 sized models are sport scale. They all have pretty big wings for their size, so I'd be surprised if they flew all that differently than each other. Like most other 40 sized warbirds, they fly like decent sport models, not like the heavy/larger scale warbirds...

In regards to the Texan, I've actually heard bad things about the Texan's ground handling both for models and the real thing. Supposedly the saying goes, if you can get a Texan off the ground you can get just about anything off the ground... Once in the air, they are great trainers though.

Razor-RCU 01-25-2003 02:55 PM

Piece-o-cake..

Easiest ground handling plane I have had- Better than my Ultrasport!

Again, I have the GP ARF (40 size) so maybe it was a smaller or larger one with bad handling-

Mine also has a sullivan tail wheel assembly :D

Thanks, that's the first time I've heard of the ground handling problem, thanks for the info, sure enough something else to think about.

I'm over looking at the GP 40 size AT6 now, you mentioned you have the sullivan tail wheel assembly, is there a problem with the one that comes with it?

My answer to the 2nd part of your question would be to definitely go with the World Models T-34.

See:

http://www.rcuniverse.com/showthread...384&forumid=57

There is a ton more info on here about the T-34 and it is an excellent choice for a 2nd plane. Nothing bad to say about it and you can also buy it from Quantum. So you solve both problems.

Good luck!!

Did you buy your T-28 decals directly from Pica or somewhere else?

I bought them directly from Pica, but Quantum sells Pica kits so they may have them too. If you are going to order the T-34 from Quantum you may as well ask them if they have the Pica T-28 decals in stock too.

Here is a pic of my World Models T-34 with the Pica T-28 decals. They were an excellent fit except for the stars and bars on the fuselage sides was a little too large.

But IMHO they make the T-34 look way better than the stock decals.

On the bottom of the wing there is a stars and bars on one side and large black NAVY lettering on the other side.

Razor-RCU 01-26-2003 01:12 AM

Nope..

My AT-6 just came like that- The stock one was probably okay-

The T-34 is a great plane, have not flown one but folks at my field are flying those right after getting off of a trainer-

Thanks for putting the picture on there, looks really good with the T-28 decals. I would want to go that way for sure. I'm going to email them and see if they have that plane in stock and see if they have the decal set. Thanks again for your help.

Gary,
If you're not interested strictly in warbirds, give the VQ Models Spacewalker a look......I have one that I bought from quantum and it flies like a dream....

Maverick,
Love the T-28 decals on the T-34! I had a T-34 with the stock decals and it always got attention at the field......lost it to a midair, if I get another, I'm going with the T-28 decals!

Mike

Thanks all

Thanks to everyone who posted their opinions, it was a great help to me. I have ordered the T-34 and in a couple of months will probably order the AT-6 as well. Once again thanks to everyone for you input.
