Question about receivers

I have a Futaba radio and need a new flight pack. Do I have to buy a Futaba receiver and servos or can I use another brand?

RE: Question about receivers

Hitec, FMA and a couple others offer their receivers in a negative (Futaba, Hitec) shift. Servo's are universal now, except futaba servo's will have to have their connectors trimmed to fit JR or Airtronics connectors. Just make sure you use a crystal from Hitec, if you use a Hitec receiver and the same with FMA etc....

RE: Question about receivers

My Tx is PCM, does that make a difference? What exactly does the PCM do besides allow me to program models?

RE: Question about receivers

PCM is not related to having multiple model memory or programming (other than fail safe).

It is a coding method for the signal that is sent to the receiver. All Futaba PCM transmitters can transmit in PCM mode or PPM mode. If you want to use PCM receivers, you MUST use Futaba. No other brand will work.

If you use PPM, any negative shift PPM receiver (often incorrectly just called "FM") will work.

Is your current Futaba receiver model RxxxDP or RxxxDF?
If it is RxxxDP it is a PCM receiver. RxxxDF is PPM.

Most Futaba transmitters (maybe all) can be switched from PCM to PPM (FM) via software toggles. You just have to remember to switch it back to PCM before flying the original PCM receiver.

RE: Question about receivers

Its model specific, so if you change the parameter menu to PPM in say your glider with a cheap hitec reciever, and switch to the model memory for your big Extra 300 thats got a fancy PCM reciever the transmitter will change modes. What you will need to do is turn the power off and back on to complete the change. You will see the new modulation type flashing till you cycle the power.
