GP Gee Bee power? Advice?
 

First time posting on this forum and I was hoping for some advice on my soon to be started Gee Bee. I've read many threads on this plane and still can't decide on what engine to use. My initial feeling is to go with the recommended OS 120 which looks good as I would like to keep the weight in check as well as that 4 stroke sound. However...is gas an option? I know some guys have done this but I'd like to hear from some actual owners and their experiences with various engines so I can make up my mind.

As well, I'd like to mount a glow driver and as this is my first time using one, I'd like to hear from guys who have used one and what should I be looking for. Brand? Model?

I assume that you are referring to the Great Planes Gee Bee.

A friend, in the UK, has one, powered with a Magnum 1.20 4 stroke. It was assembled according to the instructions, with no balance issues. He is pleased with it's flight performance.

I have one, powered by a Zenoah G-23. I reinforced the firewall and moved the servos to the rear of the radio compartment for balance. I also placed a ply mounting plate on the firewall to get proper prop spacing. No additional weight was needed, but I did use a 1300ma battery pack to help out. I haven't flown it, as there is snow on the ground.

Although the wing loading will be higher, I foresee no issues with my setup.

I forgot to mention that I cut out the tank mount, and added a platform that allows me to use a larger gas tank.

Thanks very much Tom. Your pics will be useful as I am very much in between the recommended OS 120 and your G23. BTW, how did your belly pan line up? I just did a test fit with mine and it seems snug but manageable.

My belly pan was not a problem. In fact, I thought the whole kit was well engineered. One of the best ARFs that I've assembled.

The pictures are of the ST 2300 a 1.40 engine swinging a 17X6 prop.

SJN that's a great link! i've seen that plane fly and it's funny. all the electrical gear is in the spinner up front in order to get it to balance. the guy in the red owns the LHS near that field and he basically sells all the Geebees flying there. there was a time six or more Geebees would show up and if i'm not mistaken they all but this jet-powered have G26s. but somehow i rarely see them around any more. i think they've all bit the dust.

I have GP Gee BEE on order now. Would Saito be EASY fit and would it provide more power than OS120???THANKS,RACJ
