Which is better-Goldberg or Thunder Tiger Cub???
Hello,
I've been looking at the Carl Goldberg and Thunder Tiger Cub ARF's and can't decide between the two. They are very close price wise, so the cost is not a factor. I would like to get a 4-stroke for whichever Cub I choose, though I do have a Thunder Tiger Pro 61 already that I could use as well. Will probably end up using the TT 61 due to the cost of a 4-stroke. If I was to get a 4-stroke, would a 70 or 90 size be better? I've heard that a 90 is overkill, but I don't want it to be a pig (with the 70) either. At the moment I'm leaning towards the TT Cub since it comes with a few nice scale touches like the Cub wheels, landing gear bungees, and airfoiled wing struts. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Pete |

My only question is......Why????? Why not get something like a H9 Taylorcraft or a Kangke Monocoupe..... Cubs, all the do is fly around in circles, can't do a real loop and are terrible landing in the wind.

JMO, R/C Foolish I was also contemplating the Great Planes Big Stick 60 ARF even though it's not quite scale[sm=lol.gif], but everything I hear about stick-type planes is great. I would be using the TT 61 in it, but I would really like an SK 91. Nothing like more power and the same weight right? My choices are pretty much limited to a plane that Tower Hobbies sells since I have a nice gift certificate from them to use up. Anyone else? |
RE: Which is better-Goldberg or Thunder Tiger Cub???
Why not do the Thunder Tiger Piper J-3 Cub and fly it with the Magnum RFS .91 4-stroke? Tower has the Magnum on sale for $149.99 right now, and it's actually within the recommended engine size for the TT ARF.

RE: Which is better-Goldberg or Thunder Tiger Cub???
Hey,
The thunder Tiger Cub is 184.99 and the Carl Goldberg is 174.99 and the H9 Cub is 199.99. I have flown both the Carl Goldberg and the H9 Cub, they both fly great and just about the same. The difference is that the H9 cub has a 2 peice wing and the Carl Goldberg comes with a 1 wing set and looks a little less scale than the H9, Unless you get the Carl Goldberg Anniversary addition and I beleive that has a 2 Piece wing. I personally do recommend a 4 stroke because you can swing a big prop and you want to swing the biggest prop possible on a scale cub because you want more thrust and you want to be able to fly it as slow and as scale as possible. I also do recommend the Magnum they are no longer bad engines and I have 2 of them myself and have no problem. I do not recommend a Magnum 90 that is just way overpowered for that plane. I recommend you get a Magnum 4 Stroke 70 thats not only perfect but you have enough power to pull out in case of emergency. I also like to mention, Cubs are AMAZING in the wind, matter of fact I prefer to fly my cub in the wind because you can practically fly backwords and float that sucker its amazing and you will love it, The best landing is landing a cub in the wing comming in Crab like and touching it only on the mains. You will enjoy the cub trust me. You can get a good deal in tower hobbies for the magnum 70 at around 125 bucks. You get 25 dollars of an order of 150 so what you should do is order the engine which is around 125 and order some props as big as possible for the magnum 70 which is i beleive a 14 x 7 and go up to 150 and then use the coupon code and bring it back down to 125. |

Mine was built light, but otherwise was stock. It would climb in knife-edge flight, perform snap rolls, spins and just about every other aerobatic maneuver you can think of. Of course, I ran as much control throw as possible and moved the balance point rearward a bit. It was also somewhat competitive in the old fashioned type of fun fly contests. The CGM Cub is a very capable hot dogger when set up correctly. That is why I prefer it over the other Cubs that are available. I'm not much of a scale enthusiast. I bought my Cub after flying a friend's Goldberg Cub and realizing the aerobatic potential of the CGM version. If you want scale, buy another brand. If you want lively performance, get the Goldberg Cub and power it up. Ed Cregger |
RE: Which is better-Goldberg or Thunder Tiger Cub???
Hey Ed,
Did your Cub have clipped or full-length wings? Is there any benefit, aside from transportation ease, of the two-piece wing over the one-piece? I'm leaning towards the 90 4-stroke right now since it's only $20 more and it only weighs about an ounce more. Does the extra ounce of the 90 make it any harder to balance? So far everyone's experience is with the Goldberg Cub, which seems like it would be a fine choice, however I would still like to hear about the Thunder Tiger Cub before I make a decision. Anybody have a Thunder Tiger Cub? |
RE: Which is better-Goldberg or Thunder Tiger Cub???
NJAIRSTRIKE-
Did the two Magnums you have had happen to be 4-strokes? From what I've found out, both the 70 and 90 Magnum 4-stroke are pretty good engines, though any more first-hand experience would be welcome. |
RE: Which is better-Goldberg or Thunder Tiger Cub???
I have a 20 year old Goldberg L-4 Cub that I'm restoring. I'm currently striping the Dope and fabric. What a pain! But well worth it. I also have a Hanger 9 Cub.
Hanger 9 wins for the Scale looks and weight. I like Cubs because I flew one almost on a daily bases durring the 80's. I don't need a plane to do stunts for a weekend of good flying. It brings back good memories when I look at my Cubs, I love em all. But I would have to vote for Goldberg. They just make good stuff along with Hanger 9. Great Planes is very good too, depending what you buy. Peter Dowling aka Luftwaffe Oberst AMA District II # 865404 Radio Aero Modelers Club Pulaski, NY |

RE: Which is better-Goldberg or Thunder Tiger Cub???
No problem Ed, I appreciate what you have to say. The Goldberg Cub is looking like the winner here. Everyone I know with a Goldberg Cub loves them, even though it's the kit version, but they are the same exact plane so it can't be much different, if it all. I'll be ordering tomorrow night, so I'll wait and see if anyone has anything to say about the Thunder Tiger Cub until then.
Anyone have Magnum 4-stroke experience? |

Show me a Goldberg Cub with a 91 4-stroke on it and I'll show you a plane thats way over powered! Most even say a 70 4-stroke is too much for that plane.
I have that cub and it has plenty of power with a little OS .46 AX on it! At full bore I swear the wing is going to rip off of it! It is built from the kit; clipped wing version. |

And if you're not experienced in take-offs on a cub, it's gonna look like this!
Just be ready on your 1st time taking off! Goldberg or Thunder Tiger.....be ready! That cub is more aerobatic than some people think! This is my 3rd one and I like them so well I have the Goldberg ARF sitting in the other room here. That one's gonna get a nice OS 70 surpass on it whether it likes it or not since 4-strokes sound more real! |
RE: Which is better-Goldberg or Thunder Tiger Cub???
Hey the GP 60 size stick is one of the best flying planes I have ever had... It is as steady/dependable in the air as you could want and will almost land itself... The neat thing is it lists for 149.99 ... With the 30 dollar discount I got it to my door for 119.99... Now we order a Mag .91 4 stroke which is on sale for 149.99... Using the 30 dollar discount code I got it to my door for 119.99... I don't think you can get a better combo for flying fun... Down side is everyone wants to fly it all the time...[:o]
Oh and I now have 5 Mag .91 4strokes... Three new in the box.. And two Mag .70 4strokes... This is indeed a sickness.:D |

ORIGINAL: Student Pilot I would still like to hear about the Thunder Tiger Cub before I make a decision. Anybody have a Thunder Tiger Cub? I have been in the market for an 80" ARF J-3 Cub in the $200 range, too, and I finally settled on the Thunder Tiger J-3 Cub. It's on its way from Tower right now. Why did I choose the TT over the GP or the Goldberg or the Hangar 9? Several small little things that all added up with the TT Cub on top. First, I like the Ultracote covering. The GP Cub has pre-painted fabric covering. I have used 21st Century pre-painted fabric on other airplanes, and while it looks nice, it is heavy and it bubbles up in the hot sun (much more than Ultracote) and the seams tend to lift, so that was a negative for the Great Planes Cub. Plus they got the dummy engine wrong (doesn't look like the full-scale). The Hangar 9 is a really lovely model, but I don't care for all the nuts and bolts in the wing struts and the stab mount-- too "erector set" looking for my taste. The H9 Cub does have two-piece, plug-in wings (big plus). The Goldberg Cub has strip ailerons, which is very un-Cub-like, and the model is heavy, with lots of plywood. The Thunder Tiger seemed to have the lightest construction of all of them. While the Thunder Tiger Cub has a one-piece wing, I plan on leaving the wings two-piece by gluing the joiner into just one side, and plugging the wings together before bolting them down. I have no fear of failing the wings, especially with the struts installed properly (functional struts). I will also make up little jury struts to go on the main struts, for a better scale appearance. In the end, it was all a matter of personal taste. The Thunder Tiger Cub just "looks" better to me. These are all nice kits, and I'd love to wind up with one of each, but being forced to choose, I leaned more toward the TT Cub than the others. BTW, I fly a big 1/4-scale Sig Cub, with a Saito 91, but I wanted a smaller Cub for another flying site I use, where the runway is small and the approach is tight. I will be powering my new TT Cub with an old OS FS40 that I have lying around. I could put my new Saito 56 in it, which is almost too much engine for the Cub, but the FS40 Surpass needs a good home, and the Cub will be the perfect fit. With the 30 dollar discount, I got the ARF kit for $155. A real bargain. |

It is built from the kit; clipped wing version. --------------- Your OS.46AX easily produces as much power as any .70 four-stroke engine. Honestly, if all one wishes to do is float around and enjoy scale-like takeoffs at full throttle, any .50 - .61 four-stroke would serve them well. A Thunder Tiger .61 has the power of a .91 four-stroke. I've flown a CGM Cub with an ASP .61 two-stroke. It flew just fine, with lots of power in reserve. It even landed without killing the engine, which surprised me, to be honest with you. The engine was using an 11x7 prop for ground clearance, even though it was capable of swing a larger diameter prop without a problem. More than 7" of pitch on that engine and landing with the engine running became problematic. The .91 four-stroke is pushing the limits a bit, but a friend of mine powered his version of the clipped wing Anniversary Cub with an old rear pushrod OS .90 with no problems at all. It was quite aerobatic, but slowed down fine for landing. Again, resist the temptation to carry too much propeller pitch. The extra power of the .90 was fun. Pilots should learn how to use their throttle stick as something more than a toggle switch (full high or full low throttle). I have several Magnum four-stroke engines and their OS equivalents. Once broken-in, they are virtually indistinguishable from the OS versions. The Magnum .91 is my favorite, but only when on sale at $150 or less. Ed Cregger |

I maidened my Thunder Tiger J-3 Cub today, and I'm really pleased with it. Power is an old OS FS40 four-stroke, running on a APC11x5 prop and 10% Omega fuel. Not exactly a brutish speed demon with that powerplant, but the take-offs and climb out are very scale-looking (you should see it!). It is, however, plenty enough power for regular sport flying, and I don't expect to do any knife-edges or vertical rolls with this plane-- just putt-putting around the sky, with lots of touch-and-goes and goofing around. It'll be the perfect toy for that kind of fun.
Still have to do my jury struts, so I can leave the wing struts permanently attached to the wing panels; just un-do one screw each side where the struts attach to the fuselage belly. The two-piece wing sure is nice-- dunno how I'd fit it in the back of my truck as a one-piece. BTW, I swapped out the kit-supplied landing gear with the Hangar 9 gear. Looks more scalish to me, and worth the extra $9. |
