Sig Something extra
 

I am looking at a SIG Somethin Extra. Looks like a good plane. My plan is to retire my GP Easy Sport 40 and use the 6 channel radio system and Supertigre 51 in it in this plane. This plane will be my first ARF. Any comments about the plane?

Almost completed GP Fun one.

I am thinking a mid wing sport plane would be a good addition. Not looking to do 3D aerobatics are anything like that. All I want is a good flying plane that can perform standard aerobatics that is not a handful to fly and land.

I built a SSE last fall and got to fly it several times before winter. It is the most enjoyable plane i have ever flown. I have a OS .46 LA on the nose and it just floats in for landings. I just have it on low rates and it spins loops and just flies incredible. It is a great plane to tote around as the wings come off which makes it very portable. I would highly recommend this plane to everyone. In fact (this may be going a little far but what the hey!!) I would rate this plane as a low wing trainer. Buy it and have some fun!!!

I built a Sig Something Extra about four yeras ago and really like it just for a fun plane to keep my
thumbs limbered up. I never take the wings off as it fits my van.
It is everything Flyboy says it is. It has a big thick airfoil that slows it down nice for landings.
I have a 46 size motor in it so your 51 will be fine. The plane can hadle it fine.

The other plane I like for you is the CG Tiger 2. REALLY NICE PLANE ALSO. A little bigger.
I am not a big fan of of the Midwest Hots. No reason??

I've had the ARF version of the SSE and built a kit version. Both are excellent. Mine both had Super Tigre .45's. With an 11x5 or 11x6 APC that was more than enough engine; they both would climb vertically until you couldn't see them. Your .51 will be even better.

The firewall came loose in my ARF, it may be worth adding a fillet of epoxy. Of course, it took a lot of violent snap rolls to break it loose. I also broke the rudder hinges. They were some sort off off brand hinge rather than the regular Sig CA hinges. It might be worth upgrading them. I would also recomend going to someplace like www.tntlandinggear.com and getting some taller, stronger gear. This is just minor stuff to make an excellent airplane even better.

Thank you for all the replies. The plane sounds like it will be just what I want. Like I said this will be my first ARF ever and I am some what unsure about them. Thank you for the information on what improvements / modificaitons are required to increase reliability and longevity.

I will say one thing it is going to be real weird to have a plane air worthy with about 24 hours of work.
