G-26
Hi,can anyone tell me what rpm I should get wuth a g-26 with a 18-6 prop.I,m getting about 7700 rpms now.The engine is on a G.P.super stearman.
thanks Fred |
RE: G-26
Depends on the brand of prop.
Plan on about 8000 with 18-6 APC wide blade and stock muffler. More with aftermarket louder muffler. |
RE: G-26
I'm getting 9000 with an APC 17x6 and performance in the air on a 14 pound airplane is very, very good.

Hi I,m using a 18/6 classic with aftermarket muff.still only 7700 rpm,s.I have about 3 gals through it.I have been told it will get better with 5 gals through it what do you guys think? I have a 17/6apc maybe I should try that, the plane is about 14.5 lbs.
thanks Fred |
RE: G-26
Try it, you'll like it.

RE: G-26
Hi FFDQ, I am running a 18x6 wide APC prop on a G26 on a older hanger nine stick and I turn it a little over 8200 RPMs. I run a 17x6 standard APC on a G23 mounted on a Jerrys big boy and it turns about 8600RPMs. Have you peaked the G26 engine? I am running a B&B muffler on the 26 and the stock muffler on the 23.Hope this helps you know to expect from you engine. Wayne M.

RE: G-26
hi Waynem, Do you think there is much diff.in a apc or a classic prop, also what do you mean have I peaked the g-26.I,m using a b&b type muff.
thanks Fred |
RE: G-26
Hi Fred, What I mean by peaking is leaning the high speed needle, the one on the outside. I lean mine to peak RPMs and then back off about 200 RPMs. I do this after seting the low needle for good transition from idle to wide open.I dont try to get every RPM from my G26, but I want it almost at max. I have only ran APC props on mine so far. On my G62 I changed from a Zinger 22x8 standard prop to a Menz 22x8 and saw a big differance in performance. Not so much in RPMs but pulling power, so there is a big diff. in props. You have the B&B muffler and I would try the 18x6 wide prop. or the 17x6 would be good also. You will turn it more, but on a bi-plane I would think you want pulling power instead of speed. Hope this helps Wayne M.
