Canopy tinting

How do you tint a canopy? Pretty basic question, but I'm sure there are more than one method. Wanted to tint my Cap 580 but bought a Vitual Cockpit (www.wrightrc.com) but am going to build an Extra next and want the canopy dark. Thanks!

I use RIT dye. Find a container big enough for the cockpit to fit in, Hopefully the container will fit in the microwave. Mix the dye with real warm water and let the canopy soak for awhile. Take it out and check if it's dark enough ( being carefull to not leave finger prints on it ). When you take it out rinse it with cold water. If it isn't dark enough, heat up the mixture again and do it all again till you get the color you want. GOOD LUCK !! ENJOY !!! RED

good question. The method above is fine, but there is some plastic that won't take rit dye, just washes right off without coloring it. Have never known what to do then, although have heard some spray the inside of the casopy. Haven/t tried this, myself.

If you are going for total blackout, spray paint seems to work just fine. I just sprayed the inside of mine with black spray paint. This wouldn't work for any kind of transparent tint.

Best stuff I've found is Polycarbonate translucent paint for car bodies. Works great and you can spray to get just the darkness you want.

Found some canopy tint at LHS. I think it is Pactra brand, label is half way missing. Its dark tint and I sprayed from distance of about 2' with light mist coats until I got the shade I wanted. Worked good. Just don't spray to heavy.------------Revver Bro#164

Yes, Pactra makes tint also. I get it at my LHS too. Either brand does nicely. I gave up on using Dye a long time ago after I melted a canopy. :D [X(]
