Largest Prop on SIG Four Star 40??

Hi,

What's the largest prop that will comfortably provide adequate ground clearance using the stock landing gear on a SIG Four Star 40 ARF?

I have a Saito .62 on order which i'd like to start on a 13.5 x 6 bolly if it will fit.

Hmmm.... The 13.5 sounds a little big for that size Saito. Not sure though. If you're worried about ground clearence you can take the landing gear legs off and rebend them a little bit. What I did was to take the gear and trace the profile of it on cardboard and then bend it at the stock bends and compare it to the cardboard template. Works great.

Hi,

13x6 is the benchmark prop with the .62

I hear that the Saito .56 is the most suitable for the four star, but Saito recently released the .62 and the weight and size is almost identical. The .62 can swing the same props at 1,000rpm more than the .56 but the 12x6 can exeed the max revs of 11,500.
The .62 can get the same rpms as the .56 swinging a 1" larger prop .

I got the .62 because i will probably be a more versitile engine on any future planes.

If you believe Bolly's marketing blurb, you can run a 1/2 larger bolly and use less HP because they are more effecient.

CustomPC, I just did some measuring, and with 2 3/4" wheels and an 11" prop, the clearance is 2" with the plane sitting level.

Three inch wheels look good on the 4 star 40 which give a bit more prop clearance as well.

Mine has a 12" prop, if that means anything.
Magnum .52

I had a 12x6 with a TT GP .61 on the front. With the stock wheels, I had to greaser her in or I'd get a prop strike.

Mine will have a EVO .52 NX with a 12 x 6 MAS.

Just run any prop in the range of the Saito .62 per the manual would be the safest thing to do overall.
