Gp Giles 202 1/4 Scale, Upthrust Problem!!!!
Obsessed,
As indicated in my post above, the model SHOULD NOT have "a ton of upthrust". It should be at +1 when referenced to the wing, which results in no need to 'drag the tail'. |

Have any of you noticed a lack of elevator on landing? I "run out of elevator" when flairing unless I have a little power on...
Chris P.S. I have set my control throws at the factory settings and am on high rates... My C.G. is on the forward side of the suggested range.. |

AnneMarie,
Thank you for taking the time to help us out. I have a G202 that I had just started putting together when I read the earlier posts. I decided to wait for some more feedback before proceeding to fix the stab in place. The build quality ans covering are way better than I could ever do, congrats on a first class product. It was a little expensive down here in (Australia)but so far I am very impressed. |

Chris,
Your tail is getting "washed" by your engine incidence, i would almost guarantee it. You should have tons of elevator on landing. Folks -- they should DEFINITELY be +1 stab and engine to a 0 wing, and all kits currently in stock meet that specification. apparently some models shipped must not have. If anyone has an unbuilt fuse that is drastically off, if you would be willing to return it to me for exchange so we can figure out what went wrong, i would GREATLY appreciate it. Please contact me by private message or email to do so. |

Anne,
I will double check mine again tonight, but I'm sure it's 0-0 wing-stab. The stab did also have a little bit of play but I had shimmed it so the stab was as positive as it would go. Thanks Rick |

Anne,
Could you explain more about what is happening with the elevator "wash".. I have flown with the factory setting for upthrust and have also put some downthrust and the problem with lack of elevator on landing has not changed.. My CG is at the forward most reccommended spot.. Do you think this could be the cause for lack of elevator response? Thanks, Chris |
Is the right side engine thrust correct?
Mine seems to have an awful lot of right thrust. What should the correct side thrust be?
Thanks Louden Kleer  |

Crash,
If the relation of the wing to the stab is way off, teh wing will "wash out" the stab so that the stab doesn't get clean air at low speeds, therefore giving you no response. Yes if you are on the forward most CG and on low rates you will likely be running out of elevator. try a little more throw or nudging your CG back a hair. The right thrust is 2-3 degrees. |

Hello AnnMarie,
I'm not sure how you would check an unbuilt fues but I might be willing to send mine back. The Stabilizer is mounted and I checked last night and with the wing at 0 degrees this fues actually has -1/2 degree of incidence in the tail. I took some pictures, but my camera is not all that great. You can't see it well enough in the pics but you can see my set up and the wing reads zero and the stab -1/2. |

Rick,
It'd be very easy for us to check your fuse. Yes, please send it back to me. Email me privately and we'll send you a call tag to get it back and pre-ship you another fuse "open account" (when yours gets here we clear the invoice). |

Stab Mounting

Here is a close up of the stab mounting. You can see that I propped the LE of the stab up close (No gap) and let the TE drop down.
And you know I just realized that the -1/2 on my incidence meter is actually LE up on the Left side of the airplane. So I actually have +1/2 incidence. Sorry about that. If I didn't prop up the front I probably would have 0 incidence. Rick |
Gp Giles 202 1/4 Scale, Upthrust Problem!!!!
Rick, that's good to hear -- +1/2 on the stab is fine when compared to a 0 wing; however, my real concern is the angle of your firewall. as you indicated previously that it was very obviously mroe than 1 degree up that's what we really want to see and try to figure out why.

Thrust
Hello AnnMarie,
I think that was Paul's ARF that had the up thrust problem. Mine was OK. Rick |

Rick, my confusion. Don't need your fuse then, no.

Gp Giles 202 1/4 Scale, Upthrust Problem!!!!
Annemarie and others,
FYI I have the following information regarding my GP G202 kit From the factory the incidence angles were:- Stabiliser 0 deg Wing +1 deg Firewall + 2 deg As per the info in this thread for AM. I have reset the Stab to + 1 deg Now working on the wing to bring it back to 0 deg Will use spacers to bring the engine mount back to +1 deg. Looks like it is a common problem. |

AnneMarie and others,
Further to my last post The right thrust at my firewall is 3 deg Upthrust is 2 deg Stab was 0 deg now +1 deg Wing was +1deg now 0 deg Regards Ron |

AnneMarie and others,
Just rechecked the thrust angles 3 times. Right It is actually 2 deg not 3deg So it is correct. Up is still + 2 deg Cheers Ron |

What engines are you guys running in your giles 202?

The more i read this thread the less I want the plane

Gp Giles 202 1/4 Scale, Upthrust Problem!!!!
I can say this, One month ago I had my hardest landing with a plane without it being totaled. Our field marked the runway with stakes so that it could be paved. I didn't see the stakes, I hit it on landing which flipped my plane over and spiked the rudder destroying the top half. The left landing gear was still straight, the right was bent 33% (yep, I measeured it.) Their was a small 2-3 inch crack but no breaks and no other damage. the plane is now back together and I will fly it over the holidays.
You CANNOT ask more of a plane or its builder than that. The plane is sturdy, flies great, and if this is an indication of Great Plane's ARF quality then I am sold. I have measure the thrust of both of my planes and they are both around 1 degree. I just use two yard sticks and measure the difference and use trig to solve the angle. |

Well what I would like to know is if they are going to fix the problem? Then I would happily buy one

it is July 2002, any news from GP regarding the giles 202 ARF??
I am going to fly it for the first time next saturday!! I was adviced by La PAZ Baja club to give down trim on the elevator as well !! please reply. Thanks |
Gp Giles 202 1/4 Scale, Upthrust Problem!!!!
Mancha,
With all models we've had here, and the 2 that have been sent to us, we've found no problem. I am still waiting tos ee a problem aircraft so we can try to get to the bototm of what may have been wrong with a tooling or something ot be sure we avoid it in the future. All kits in stock, and all the kits our R&D and design teams are flying, are set exactly as called for and fly perfectly. additionally i have talked to not less than 100 VERY happy owners of this aircraft who have no problems at all. please, all BE SURE you are using the CG as listed in the manual and the SECOND addendum. the first addendum was printed in error. CG is from the TRAILING edge of the wing not the LE. if from the LE you'll have a tail heavy handful.... |
