My Dave Patrick Edge 540T just arrived today from Chief Aircraft. I've only opened the box once to check things out and it looks like they've outdone themselves with this one! This plane looks great and the new laser cut construction is fabulous! They've made some GREAT improvements over the Extra, and I was so glad to see a decent-sized hatch opening, although it could still be larger. This one is going to be LIGHTWEIGHT!

Does it have dual aileron servos?
Elevator servos in the tail?

Thanks

The wings are set up for EITHER single or dual aileron servos. All the necessary harware including linkages and hatches are there for the second servo, you just need to cut the Ultracote out and install the hatch. Pretty nice setup. The plane is setup for a single elevator servo w/ pull-pull linkages, but there are cutouts in the rear for dual elevator servos if necessary. Again, all linkages are included and you only need to cut out the Ultracote as the openings are already there. A lot of nice options on this one!

If you need custom wingbags for your Edge contact me, I'll give you a special deal because we need to get that aircrafts's dimensions in our database.

Thanks. Is the hatch for the second aileron provided?

Yes, the hatch for the second aileron is provided as well as all of the mounting hardware and the servo linkages/horns/etc. The hatches are already covered and the only additional work you have to do is to cut the Ultracote on the wing where the second hatch opening is. This plane has a tapered aileron and this coupled with the geometry of the wing should not be as prone to flutter as others. I'm just going to make sure to have good, solid connections and a servo with over 100 oz-in of torque and flutter should be a non issue as long as I keep the speeds reasonable. I think the second aileron will only add extra weight.

Thats nice! Thanks for sharing the pics with us.....what engine are youg going to use? Have you weighed the complete airframe yet?

I haven't weighed the thing yet. Originally I was planning on going with a gas engine like a BME 50 or DA 50, but after seeing just how light this thing is built, I think I may go with a Moki 1.80 and go for a SUPER low wing loading. Dave Patrick thinks I should try a YS140 that I have available, and use single aileron servos and a pull-pull single elevator servo w/ a lithium-ion battery to go for an ultra light airplane, but I'm just not sure. Right now, I have a YS140 in my Goldberg Sukhoi and it is the PERFECT combination, but this plane might be a little much for it. Hopefully today I will get the complete airframe weighed in.

Wow that looks like a really nice plane. Does the covering job look as nice in person as it does in the photo's? Thanks for the pics. I don't know what I would do without the internet and RCUnivers. :D

Flapbreaker and rongreg13,

I got mine yesterday, and I couldn't hardy find a flaw anywhere in the covering. It really looks great. This is really going to be a nice plane. I also can't believe how light it is. If I can come up with a decent scale I will try and weigh the airframe also for some comparison information. I was also planning to use a DA 50 of something similar, but am not sure now after seeing the plane. I would like to put a gasser in it, but a 40 might be more in line. I would rather put a fifty in, so I have it down the road, but I am wondering if it will be too much.

What are thoughts on servos and arrangements? Dual or sigle ailerons? Elevator?

Thanks,
Ryan

I'm in the same frame of mind as you when it comes to an engine. If I were going to put gas, I think the best bet might be something like a ZDZ40 or a nice powerful 2.4 because the airframe is so light. I called Dave Patrick Models yesterday to order the instrument panels, and I talked to Dave Patrick himself. He recommends going with the pull-pull setup for elevator in all circumstances. He said the only time he would even CONSIDER using the tail mounted servos is if he had a big, heavy gasser that needed to be balanced. I'm with him on that one as the pull-pull is a much tighter connection and the balanced control surfaces do not need a monster servo. As far as the ailerons, I'm still going back and forth as to one or two servos. I firmly believe that it only needs one, but I might just put two in to be safe. The added weight would only be the weight of the one extra servo basically. I'm using Futaba 9252s which are relatively light. The more and more I think about it, I think the best route may end up being a Moki engine w/ Dave Patrick's custom Bisson muffler, two aileron servos, and a single pull-pull setup for the elevators. Oh well, maybe I'll change my mind again by tomorrow!

I noticed that chiefaircraft is selling the edge 540 combined with Moki 2.10 Not sure why the 2.10 but thought it was interesting considering Dave's website does not recomend the 2.10 but rather the 1.8

I am just try to feel out what people are planning for engine and servos. I have acouple of projects to finish up before I can start the edge. Thanks for the info that you got from Dave. I feel more comfortable with dual elevators servos. It still gives me a chance to get down if I have a servo problem on elevator. I was really wanting to put 50 size gaser in it, but now I am wondering. I am anxious to see what others say. I know that 3Dbatixkid was going to put a ZDZ50 in his, so we'll have to what and see when the responses start coming in.

Thanks,
Ryan

LOOKING FORWARD TO HEARING ABOUT THAT WIEGHT. COULD YOU WIEGH IT WITHOUT ANY EQUIPMENT? i HAVE A YS 140DZ THAT I AN THINKING ABOUT USING. I WAS FLYING IT TODAY IN MY FUNWORLD 3D TURNING AN APC 18X8 WIDE 8800RPM. THE PLANE WIEGHS 11.4LBS AN IT IS TOTALLY UNLIMITED HANGING ON PROP AT 1/4 THROTTLE THEN BLAST OUT OF HOVER. IF WE COULD GET THE EDGETO COME IN AT 12.4LBS IT MIGHT BE ACCEPTABLE.
COULD YOU WIEGH THE LANDING GEAR WITHOUT AXILES & WHEELS FOR ME. I AM THINKING ABOUT A CARBON FIBER GEAR & WANTED TO COMPARE. ALSO GIVE US THE MEASUREMENT AS WELL. A= WIDTH AT FUSE MOUNTING, B = HIEGHT AT AXILE HOLE, C=WIDTH OF SHOULDER, AND D= WIDTH BETWEEN THE LEGS AT THE WHEELS.
THANKS!

Just thought I'd share a few minor issues I've had with my Edge so far. First, when you mount the rudder control horns, the instructions tell you to mount the first one "as low as practicable." Watch out, because if you go too low, you'll miss the hard plate that is underneath the covering.

The second and biggest problem I've found so far is the hinging of the elevators. On mine, the holes in the horizontal stabs nearest the root are drilled INTO the spar tube! I didn't even notice until I had hinged them and tried to slide them on to the tube to check fit and realized the tube would only slide on a couple of inches! Luckily, my glue was not TOTALLY dry, so I was able to pull off the elevators and cut the hinge points short so they do not protrude into the tube. Watch out for this one and plan ahead!

#1. What is the cost of the kit?
#2. Does anyone know if there is a website or link showing an elevator pull pull system?
#3. What are the reviews on this plane so far?
I am very interested and thinking about purchasing as well.
