AK-Models Extra 300S Build Question
AK- Models Aero Works 60 sized Extra 300S. 63" wingspan.
Putting a OS .91 max in it. Reinforced the firewall with 30 min epoxy and triangular stock. Also reinforced a few other spots accordingly. I just epoxied the wing halves together and I am wondering where to cut the covering and adhere the reinforcement wood plate. Do I put it on the top of the wing? That is the only place it will sit flush. The dieheydral of the wing does not allow it to sit flush on the bottom of the wing. Also I have a cover to glue to the bottom of the wing to make everything flush and smooth on the bottom of the plane. Epoxy or CA glue for that? I then have one last question of what to use to fix the wing to the main fuselage. There is blind nuts in there now and they directions call for a 4x40 screw with a 8mm washer. That does not seem like a good way to do it to me... Anyone build this plane yet I would appreciate your help. |
RE: AK-Models Extra 300S Build Question
The reinforcement wood plate is provided for extra support for the wing mounting screw heads. As such, it needs to go on the bottom of the wing where the screws enter. The steps are:
1. position the plate on the wing and mark the perimeter 2. cut and remove the covering about 1/8" inside the marks and remove the covering, exposng bare wood 3. epoxy the plate to the bare wood. 5 min epoxy is OK here. You noticed the wing dihedral doesn't allow the plate to lie flat. The plate should have a partial cut at the center that will allow the plate to be bent, or more accurately, cracked at that cut to let it lay flat on the wing. After the plate is installed, carefully locate the measurements given in the manual for drilling the holes for the screws. You say the wing attachment screws are 4-40? These kits use metric hardware. Recheck the instructions. Maybe they are 4mm by 40mm long? |
RE: AK-Models Extra 300S Build Question
You are right 4mmx40mm. Should I purchase some bigger nylon bolts?
Thanks for the info as well. Appreciate the help big time. ;) Thanks for the correct way to spell dihedral too. lol , knew I was wrong... |
RE: AK-Models Extra 300S Build Question
The 4mm steel wing hold down bolts are plenty strong enough for the job. I like to use 1/4" nylon bolts simply because nylon is less likely to vibrate loose. You might go with the supplied bolts and see if they remain tight. If there is any problem, it's no big deal to convert to nylon bolts later. I'm currently putting together the A-K Hellcat, and it provides the same 4mm wing bolts. I went ahead and changed it to nylon, as the blind nuts were not preinstalled. Since I got to do the complete installation, it was no more trouble to go with the nylon. I had some in my "treasure" box, anyway.

RE: AK-Models Extra 300S Build Question
I tried to order one of these a while back and they were out of stock, how do they compare to other arfs, covering, buildquality and flying. I since ordered a seagull model. thanks

RE: AK-Models Extra 300S Build Question
Are you asking about the Extra or the Hellcat?
