Glue For Stabilisers
 

Hi, I've put together a few planes and, for nitro planes, have always used epoxy for the horizontal and vertical stabilisers as I was of the view that the epoxy joint was a little more resistant to vibration and generally more durable. The extra working time and easy clen up were also pluses.

Recently, I've seen a few instruction manuals (e.g. Somenzini, Serb Art) where the horizontal stab is glued on using thin CA. The vertical stab is still glued in using epoxy. I guess the draw here would be a shorter working time and near instantaneous setting of position (no accidental bumping while the glues cures)

Is this safe? I guess I have done a few electric and 1/2A planes this way and never had a failure, but would this be strong/robust enough on a bigger nitro/gas plane?

The fit is what counts. If you have a very good fit with parallel and square joints CA will work. I like to use epoxy. Why mess with something that works?

I also use epoxy. Excess can be cleaned up with alcohal before it sets up. Trim fareings and such I CA on.

Thanks guys. Was just wondering cuz it seems to be more common these days.

I use epoxy for much the same reasons - it works plus clean up is thorough and easy.
