What is everyone's opinions about this plane? seems the general consensus is that you can't have to much power, but would a GP-42 or pro .46 be too much for this plane?

Too much power? no way!

I thought the same and started with a 40, it was OK, but i ended up with a 46 in a matter of a couple weeks.

Regardless of engine choice, it would be a good idea to add plywood to the fuse from the nose back to the middle of the wing. The nose of this plane is pretty weak with out it.

Saw a review of this airplane in MAN and had to have one. Bought the kit, trimmed it out just like the review and put a OS46FX on the front. It was my favorite airplane all season long until it cracked in half on one of the last landings of the year. And I know what you are thinking but it wasn't a hard landing. The crack was just forward of the wing and right where the LG attaches. I understand that is a weak spot in the design. The Lg is also weak. I have another waiting to be built and I will definitely reinforce the fuse and buy different LG. I think DuBro makes one that will fit. Put a 46 on the nose and it will be more than enough power. Hope this helps.

... but really, a 0.46? No way.

I started mine with an OS 0.25 which was fine, but moved up to an old Enya 0.35 which absolutely whips this little plane along.

It lands so slowly, how do you get a 0.46 to idle down enough to bring it in?

How does it land with the .46 on it? i know it is a very stable and slow flier with the recommended engines, but what about with the .46? TR's?

Are we talking about the Lazy P-51? I've got one with an OS-25FX...What a great little motor. This airplane has a huge (for it's size) flat-bottomed airfoil...I programmed offset ailerons as per the instructions, and flaperons...what the heck right? It will fly inverted all day with a touch of down.
This breed of ARF is certainly raising the bar...real covering, nice hardware, great flying planes.
It will snap, spin, and do any move I can do ... I'm no pro, and the 25FX is enough power for me. Will take off in 3 feet. No Lie. ok...maybe it's 5 feet....but no more.

Sorry. Are we talking about the Tower hobbies Fun 51 kit?

If so, the 46 is not too much. The Fun 51, and all the other fun flys have a thick fun fly type airfoil that slows down the plane a heck of a lot. I usually have to gas mine up a bit just to reach the runway.

One other consideration is, there are a lot of 40 sized planes out there. Almost all of them fly better with a 46 than a 40. One day
this plane will get crunched or just get worn out, and you will want to move the engine and radio to a new airframe.

If you really want a 40, buy one from me!! i got one just sitting in a box, and it is likely to stay there. All my 40 sized planes have 46's and 47's in them, (except for the one that has a Saito 100 :D ) (my personal favorite). Why fly the equivalent of a 1960's Volkswagen Bus, when for just a few bucks more you can be flying a Ferrari? Just because a Ferrari can do 200 Mph doesn't mean you are obligated to go that fast all the time.

Hmmm.. maybe i rant a little, but it sure is fun!

Dubro does make suitable plastic gear for this. They are pretty tough, and i think a little lighter. one of the guys i fly with has one with the dubro gear, his only complaint is the dubro ones bounce a bit more. over all, they are better, so i will probably put the dubro's on next time they get bent.

Well, I guess that was why there was confusion. You might want to consider a Fun51 anyway. Little bit of tweaking and it is a lot of fun for the buck.
