Lead paint in ARFs?

Every week there is a new story about lead paint from China. So what are the odds our cowls and pants have lead paint in them? I would say most of them do. Is there a danger to us? I try to wear a mask when cutting the cowl. Is ths enough?

Ah man... I kiss all my planes goodbye when I set them down for take off... Darn It!

Honestly, I think the fuel for most planes is far more harmful than handling the cowl.

You should be wearing a mask anyway when cutting cowls.
Watch out for any lead in the props too - they can really hurt y'all:D

I think the exposure is very low for us.Yes using a dremel will make a mess and you should do that in a ventilated area with mask. Its the fiberglass that is more irritant.
Its the poor guy that has to spray all those cowls and wheelpants that should be worried.

Yeah. Avoid putting your ARF in your mouth and you may be OK.

Makes you wonder that the generation raised with lead paint on walls, lead water pipes, lead and tin toy soldiers is the one that invented transistors, computers, the integrated circuit and put man on the moon. We banned it and now we have "Survivor", "Idol" and low rider pants.

I think the younger generation worries about way too much nowdays. I was born in 1950 an raised with all of the bad stuff (lead paint, DDT an so forth) an don't seem to have any problems. I'm with Charlie P. on this one.

With none of this stuff around now, we have the new generation that wears baggy pants, don't have the slightest idea which way the bill on a hat is suppose to point, an constantly whines about everything that comes along. You name it, an they will find something wrong with it.

Don't worry, at the rate they are going there won't be anybody here to whine about in a few more generations.

That's a legitimate question. I always wear a dusk mask or respirator while I'm grinding on my cowls and I also grind it close to the shop vac hose to suck up the dust. I think there is more danger of breathing in the fiberglass particules.

Don't want to sound sinister but could it be their population growth control attempt? well if it is, it's not working...LOL;)

I have to laugh at this lead paint deal. I was born in 1946 and my Father was a plumber. I worked with him since I was 10 and in those days we INSTALLED lead water pipes and painted or window sills with lead paint. My father died on the operating table at 85 while they replaced his knee, my Mother is 90 and lives alone in her own house and has smoked a pack of cigs a day since she was 12. I'm 62 and still one of the most active people you would want to meet.

HOW LONG DOES EVERYONE WANT TO LIVE. :D:D:D

I was also born of that generation... no problems thanks to lead paint, not a single cancerous cell on my third and fourth arms either!

:D:D:D

In any event... I thought that most glow fuel proof paints were water soluble and therefor do not contain lead.

Isn't this true of automotive paints too, and has been so for a long while?

Of course none of our planes are reviewed by Consumer Reports...

And don't forget all the fun we had dropping globs of Mercury on the floor and then herding the errant drops back together and scooping it up with paper to put it back in the container. I still have 5# glass bottle of mercury tucked away for the grandchildren. It won't be any worse for them than Ritalin.

Yup, we used to rub mercury on our silver coins back then and it would make them shine an look just like brand new......

Everybody back in the 50's an 60's played with mercury..

It seems like the ones that didn't play with it (mercury that is [8D]) now hafta take Viagra....hehe

You would have to eat one cowl every day for 30 years to get enough lead into your system to cause any affects. I would be more concerned with the fiberglass, epoxy resin and solvents used while spray painting :D

BTW: I am a toxicologist and deal with this stuff everyday ;)

David,
I grew up in the 60's and am used to inhaling Chinese lead so it doesn't really bother me. Nowadays, my 40 size planes weigh 15 pounds, but my allegies are o.k. Keep 'em above ground brother and fly 'em like ya stole 'em.
