Engine for Tiger 60 ARF
 

Ok so I was in the market for a good 2nd airplane and finally decided on the Goldberg Tiger 60 ARF. I unfortunately now have the daunting task of selecting a great engine for this plane. I'd like to stick to 2-strokes, but my only experience with 2-strokes is in the O.S. Engines line, a product line that I have been extremely pleased with. Not to mention, O.S. Engines in general receive the highest reviews from RC Universe members (at least between all the 2-stroke manufacturers out there). My issue with an O.S. engine for my new Tiger 60 ARF is this: O.S. makes a reasonably priced .61 (the .61FX), but their next displacement up (the .75AX) is upwards of $200, an amount that is a little above my price range, especially for only a second airplane. While Goldberg rates the plane for engine displacements between .60 and .65, I am worried that the .61FX might not be enough power. Additionally, it seems like the trend on RC Universe is to go slightly larger on engine displacement then the manufacturer recommends. Does anyone have any recommendations of what 2-stroke to put in this plane (again, I'm not considering 4-strokes due to cost)? If you think the .61FX will be more than enough power, I will just go with that, but any recommendations for a competitively priced 2-stroke in the .75 range would be great. I know that SuperTigre makes a .75 and I've seen pictures of them on the Tiger 60, but I've heard that SuperTigres are notoriously difficult to tune and have reliability issues. Some people have also tried to tell me that even though a SuperTigre .75 has a larger displacement than the .61FX, the .61FX will actually perform better because O.S. Engines are manufactured with higher tolerances and are able to be tuned better, etc., but I don't know if this is myth or not. Please help!!!!!:(

well with any of my .40 sized planes I allways opted for the .46. It just needed the power, that is all.
I am putting together my first .60 plane now and have an evo .61 NT bolted on. Don't know if it will be enough power or not, we will have to see. UUhhhgg, how I hate the engine game. Never can tell exactly what you need unless its a familiar plane.

P.S. There is allways RCU market place if you decide it needs a engine change. I buy/sell there and get good results. people are usually very honest. GOOD LUCK!!

Go w/the OS you will not regret the purchase. I only have gas and electric powered planes now but I used OS products almost 30 years w/o problems or whatsoever. I had some other brands along the years, ST included, but that were really not up to par. If you had a good experience w/OS why change? Life is too short, and we have better things to do w/our time than fiddle w/junk:D

I used OS, Irving, Satio, EVO and Tower engines. I really like the EVO 46 on my PnP Cub and I wouldn't mind trying one on my next 60 size plane. Also, I wouldn't hesitate on using the Tower 61. Little more noiser then the others, but is a good cheap engine. Good luck and have fun. The Tiger is a great plane.

Go for the Tower Hobbies 75!! Great engine under a hundred $$, easy to tune and tons of power!! I have an OS 61 and considering the price tag I am not not too impressed. Its very reliable but unlike the 46 FX/AX versions the .61 only has mediocre power for its size. The TH engines really rock and the price makes them an outstanding value!:D

I say spend the $$ on the .75AX

Try a GMS .76 if you want a ringed engine- the Tower .75 if you want ABC. Both are excellent values for the money, and both have a two year warranty backed by Tower Hobbies. You can buy 2 of them for the price of an OS.

Tower .75 by far is the best engine for the money out there! They run like a watch, have a ton of power and great transition characteristics. The Tiger 60 I had I flew with an older K&B .65 Sportster and it ran and flew well on that engine but the Tower would be my first choice by far. Second choice would be a Super Tigre .75, these engines are very user friendly, ringed, lots of power, and once broken in nobody ever has a complaint about them. Had one on a Super Sportster which flies very similar to the Tiger and it was a rocket.
