Magic Covering Material
Well, I was hovering and ran out of fuel. 'Nuff said about that...you get the picture! I would like to match up the covering on a repair job. Does anyone know what this plane is covered with? I called modeltech and they told me that it was a low heat polyester covering. Nothing else...not much help there!
Thanks.... :( |

I have the magic and the magic extra 300. They are covered with poyester iron on fabric. This fabric is not available to the general public. If you look at the underside of this material you can see that it is different than anything you can buy. I have made several repairs to my planes with very close color matches by spray painting the patch (ultracote) with Rustoleum (high gloss only) then applying the patch with low heat. Mono cote does not work well for this because the higher heat needed to stick it will bother the paint. You should use the general guide lines for painting shrinkable covering also. One more thing, I have found that a very light cote of balsa rite to the patch only will let you use even lower heat. Hope you find this usefull.

Hi My name is Scot
I am very seriosly looking at getting a M/Tech magic extra 300L. Is this Arf assembled with your handywork? Looks very very nice! One of the biggest drawbacks with the model seems to be the covering meterial, have hou had any problems with the covering meterial, lifting, discolouring, wrinkling, other at all? Is the meterial tough like monokote or is it thin and flimsy? On the pic you posted it looks as though the undercarriage is a bit bigger than std, is it aftermarket? If you can offer any other info to help me make up my mind on the model I would be forever in your debt ta |

The plane flies great, but its a shame that for the cost of the arf you'd think that Modeltech would see that its covered with quality film. If this is what we... WE that love the sport with a passion, can expect form Modeltech, you can expect myself and others with the same passion, to put Modeltech out of business. If it wasn't for the planes good flying characteristics, I'd trash it. The best thing to do is a complete recover with Ultracote,etc.. Because patching it will drive you crazy.
