h9 cub 40 - are pins/keepers for the wing struts possible?

1 Attachment(s)
i have a h9 cub 40 that i'm getting ready to fly again and i always hated removing the wing struts and reinstalling them everytime i wanted to fly it. the 1/4 scale h9 cub comes with a pin and keeper system and i wanted to know if anyone has done something like this on the 40 size and what did you use?

this is a pic of the part on the 1/4 scale cub

Attachment 2239390

EDIT: I ordered the 1/4 scale part and it worked fine, just needed to open up the holes on the struts to 1/8 of an inch which doesnt really remove much material. for 3.99 it saves a lot of work at the field!

I have he same problem attaching the struts on my H9 Cub. I don't think cotter pins are secure enough to hold the struts properly. I wonder if wire ties would work?

my buddy has the 1/4 scale that uses those pins, i'm going to see if they'll fit on the 40 size but i think they might be to big and i'd have to remove to much material from the plane to fit them on safely.if only i can find something smaller, i was even thinking of drilling a hole through a 4-40 bolt and sliding a keeper through it, i'm sure if it works on the 1/4 scale it'll work on the little 40 size.

Now that might work. Let me know how you plan drill the 4-40 - I would think you would need a drill press to do it accurately.

yea i was definately planning to use a drill press, or maybe buy a box of 100 screws and hope the atleast 4 survive doing it free hand! ;)

after much searching i think i'm just going to use the drill press to drill holes in the bolts.

I wonder if Lowes or Home Depot or better yet, Ace Hardware, have cotter pins and cotter keys in 4-4- size, It's worth a look. Check it out, I'll do the same here.

i spent the whole day trying to figure out what the piece the cotter pin would go into is called, and i did a search for the word cotter key that you mentioned, then in my search results i found "clevis key" which is exactly what i need. mcmaster sells them with cotter pins already and all.
hopefully this pic works

if any one is interested, the hangar 9 part for the 1/4 scale cub works fine, you just have to open up the holes on the strut and mount to 1/8. its not really opening up but more like shaving it a little because you dont remove barely any material so structurally its still very strong.

this is the link to them.

I believe the Hanger 9 .40 Piper Pawnee has the pins in the scale of our cub... so don't start drilling yet!!!

I noticed the pawnee had them also but I have a feeling its going to be the same part. You're not really drilling out much. In about half of them the pin actually fit in, in some others it would go in but not completely and in a few it needed a little drilling. I used a 1/8 inch little hand held drill bit and had to turn it about 3 times to get the job done so its not really much drilling, I'd almost call it sanding. I did it to all of them though just to be uniform.

Edit: I checked on horizon now and they have different part numbers and the pawnee ones are almost twice the price. The cub ones brought 8 so I have 4 spares for when I lose them like I lose everything.

Could anyone that has these 1/4 cub keeper pins give me some dimensions on them? I havent had any luck with Horizon answering me. Length and Dia. is what I really need. I hope they will fit the bill for strut attachments on my Super Decathlon. I have tried all the hardware stores in the area and all I could find online but, nobody carries them smaller than 3/16. Thanks in advance.

Dont know what S.D. you have, but I had the Phoenix version and they ( 1/4 H9 Cub ) fit perfect. I dont think I even had to drill the strut holes if I remember right.
