recognize this P-51 ARF ?

1 Attachment(s)
Hi,
Anyone recognize this particular P-51 ARF by the decal scheme? What brand is it? I bought this years ago just before I discontinued my hobbying. Box cover and docs got lost at some point. And I bought it at a shop in an area where I moved from since then.

Obviously I can assemble it without docs :) but I wouldn't mind getting to the manufacturer's site and just seeing what exact range of engine recommendations they have specified for it. It's pretty much the exact same size as the hangar 9 PTS model, so I could go with those specs but still would be nice to know the brand.

Thanks

edit: hangar 9, for their version of this, does not specify a 4 stroke for it. What reason might there be for that? Because I have a OS FS series 70 that I'd like to use (rather than my 0.46 2 stroke). Would that be too big?

It's a Vmar. Probably a 60 size. The 70 is more likely to be too small than too large.

It may be the same size as the Hanger 9 PTS but I think you will find an extra kilo in the Vmar version.

Thanks, important info that :) Have you owned this?

I remember though that I bought it because it fit one of my three engines (which are 25 and 46 2 stroke and 70 4 stroke). Hmmm.

I haven't found a website for them as yet. There is a vmar rc car racing, but no planes... on the other hand, some web shops are listing "new" ARF's by Vmar. As yet haven't found a web shop listing for this model. Will keep searching.

Thanks a lot. Good info. Going with h9 2 stroke specs would have been a big goof [X(]

Thanks. I found a P-51D ARF, but with totally different paint scheme (better actually). And where the fuse meets the wing, there seems to be an extra bit of shape-detail. But scale specs are the same and engine spec is:

Engine: .40-.53 two cycle, .52-.70 four cycle

It has fiberglass engine cowling just like mine.

Ah but just noticed that the wings join together first and then mount to fuse... totally different from mine: wings join each other and fuse with one long aluminum tube through fuse (and bolts to fuse sides).

Well, I guess I can weigh it and go from there unless I find some archival listing of this apparently discontinued version.

Thanks a lot for the help

edit: There's no mention of P-51 in superseded nor discontinued models... a mystery.

RE: recognize this P-51 ARF ?

So I weighed the mustang (wings, fins, fuse, control links, firewall, gear, wheels, OS FS 70 engine, and five servos @46gx5). My RX and RX bat are installed in a 80% finished J3 and didn't feel like taking them out. The scale I used is accurate enough: weighed a few 0.5 to 1 kg dumb bell disks on it. However I did weigh one standard servo at the grocery store. I'm so bad... but I put it in a baggy first :)

So that so far comes to 5.8 pounds. The Hangar 9 PTS is 6.5 to 7.0 lbs flying weight (not dry apparently). The different vmar P-51 was 6.0 to 6.5 lbs dry flying weight. So I guess that means that the H9 PTS and similar engine specs are usable.

It's nothing special as ARF's go but the fins and wings in particular look and feel like they are nicely constructed. Covering needs work... wrinkles [:-]

Thanks for replies

No, I never had one but a club member did. Sounds like the 70 will work fine. I remembered them being heavier.

You might check Seagull as well. (Seagull and Vmar are related and it may be a discontinued Seagull product instead.)

RE: recognize this P-51 ARF ?

I just searched Seagull, but not sure. Paint scheme changed but also horizontal stabs appear to be flat; mine are sym-airfoil.

Funny how some of these model companies have no websites.

Oh well, but it was actually a useful task to do the weighing... useful to know that it looks like it will come in a little lighter than average; will have better idea of what to expect when I fly it... and just have a feeling like I know the plane better to start with... every little helps.

Think I might need to reinforce the fuse sides at the wings though, because it looks on the thin side, so that will add some weight. Perhaps could be that your club mate did some modding to the plane?

But turns out that I've thought I should go with the 2 cycle 46 at first afterall until I get confident with it. Then maybe later a four stroke roar will suit the Mustang nicely :)

Thanks for your help

Hi again. I've been looking at this again because I've been thinking about the exact CG and control throw recommendations. I finally did determine that you were not mistaken about it being vmar. They upgraded the ARF at some point changing how the wing is mounted etc and totally changed the look, but much of the construction is very much the same still. I got the manual for the current version and it might be good enough, but I'll still write to them and ask if they have a copy of the old manual.

How the new one looks threw me off the trail initially and the website is a little unclear about there having been an earlier version of it, but I finally know for sure now.

Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction :) Great help to be able to track this down.

That info too helped solve the mystery :)

Cheers :)
