Just bought a WM super chipmunk, I am thinking about putting in a gms 76. Any advice from anyone? has anyone got this combo??

The 76 will fly but I recomend the os 91 4stroke. It will have excellent verticle performance.

I had a Saito .91 in mine a few years ago and it flew well also.

It will fly well with a 91 4s. I was going to put in a Saito 100 for a little more oomph, but the 91 I hear suits the plane very well.

I agree with everyone else. The Chipmunk just begs for a 4-stroke. They balance well with a 90. I have a YS-120 in mine, but I admit it would probably fly better with a 90.

OS 91 Surpass or the Saito 100.
Both are a match made in heaven.

they all sound like good motors but a bit out of my price range at the moment. The most i could afford is about 400 Aus
So maybe a magnum 91?

or are they to unreliable?

I originally had an O.S. .91 Surpass in mine, but to me, it was not enough engine. Just needed a bit more power, so I put in a Super tiger .90 two stroke.

Hope to fly it this weekend.

I have a CG Super Chipmunk with a OS 91fx - I use a 14x6 prop
which keeps the speed down but has lots of power - unlimited
vert. After flying combo this I dont think I would like any less power. Also I dont have to lean the motor out to get it to perform.

Fit in Cowl
 

The SuperTigre .61, .75 and .90 all share the same external dimensions.

Here is a picture of me and my Chipmunk. It has a SuperTigre 90 in it and eventhough the cowl is custom, you can get an idea of what it would look like.

BTW, the OS .61FX is a 1/4" shorter and the head is not as big. It would fly the airplane nicely, but not if you want to hover...

well all the help has been great but i think everyone is forgetting i am on a budget. 400 aus is not enough for an os or any major brand. so think i need to go with magnum.

Why not get a TT 91 FS? Less than Magnum, O.S., and Saito but more power. I have the TT in my WM SC. Flies great! (Even though it is kind of a hangar queen...;) )

Not sure what the $ conversion is from U.S. to Aus.

Buy what you wish, and can afford, not necessarily what others are using. I'm sure each one has pleased the owner, therefore the above recommendations. I have several O.S. 91 FS and several Magnums. I forget which is in what model. Unless I look at the log books, I really can't say what engine it is that I am flying. Have had each for over 5 yrs. with no problems. Just follow the mfrs. instructions on break-in and fuel....Cheers!!

There you go Dutch, good advice.
Here's the deal Matty: All of us when we have a choice and the $$ don't really matter, will usually buy the best we can afford, and go with the best name brand we can afford.
I wouldn't hesitate for a second to buy a Magnum or Thunder Tiger if that's what my budget allowed. I'm in this for as much fun per dollar as I can get. It's easy to get caught up into the name brand thing, sure some engines may preform longer down the road. Get the Magnum or TT, mount it inverted, and fly it 5 or 6 tanks before you put the cowl on her. This way you will completely familiarize yourself with how it likes to run, start and so forth.
Don't beat up on yourself over this issue, ANY 4 Stroke will be cleaner and cooler than a comparable two stroke (sorry, I have had both), sure the 60 two stroke will fly it, my buddy has one and it flys well (OS 60 FSR Pumped) but with a two stroke you need a Pitts muffler adding to the cost. The Magnums are a sweet deal right now so go with that, don't be ashamed and follow the break in instructions.
A couple of guys at my field have the Magnums, one in a Hog Bipe and another in a Cub (Yecch) and they fly perfectly well with no problems.

Engine Choice
 

I've never had any 4-strokes, but I have seen them at the field. I just never got the urge to spend all the money. Anyway, I have seen several Magnum .90 4-strokes along with several O.S. .90's and they all seemed to run good. If I were in the market for a 4-stroke in that size range, I would take a serious look at them. I would probably start by doing a search in the "engines" forum.

ok. I have pretty much decided on the magnum 91 2 stroke
was going to go for the 76 but the 91 is only an extra $30 and i can use it in larges planes then. But now what prop size. gee cant wait to get it in the air. Have taken a week off next week so lots of flying to be done. Thanks for all the help guys.

You might want to try getting a Super tigre 90 if you can't get the magnum 90.

I was on the same sort of budget and tried to get the Magnum but there wasn't any in Aussie 2 months ago so went for the Super Tigre.

The ST 90 is nice and small and great if your putting it in a 60 suited plane and about the same price.
