World Models 80" Extra
I was just wanting to see if any one has bought the 80" Extra and what motors are being installed and I guess any other info I might be able to use.

One more time...same guestion but I need to find someone that has this plane with a Saito 180 on it.

I use the zenoah G45. Just got back from flying. Had a blast!

WM 300 80"
I have a BME 44 on mine and it flies fantastic!

World Models 80" Extra
I was wondering if anyone has one of the new Fuji 50's in their WM Extra. I was thinking of putting a Zenoah 38cc in mine, but I've just read a review of the Great Planes Extra that they put a Fuji in, and that is 2" shorter span, so I was thinking it should be OK

I Backed Out - No Guts
My friend has one with a OS 160 and it flys very well. I bought a GP wagstaff (approx. same size) with the intention of putting my Saito 180 on it.
My friend thinks the Saito will fly it ? But I have backed out and will put a gasser on it "No Guts" Wish I could also hear from some one who has tried a Saito 180 on this size plane. It flew my deceased Hanger 9 540 very well, but was smaller in overall size, although wing span was same. |
World Models 80" Extra
I've flown one with a Brison 2.4 and later a ZDZ 50. The ZDZ definitely gave it awesome performance, and the Brison also gave very good performance. In my opinion a better buy than the GP Extra. Based on some brief experience with the Fuji 86, I'd stay away from the Fuji 50 just because we couldn't hand-start the 86.

World Models 80" Extra
Believe me if I had more ready cash it would have a gasser on it but all I have right now is the 180 that has pulled the Sig Extre and the H( 73" Snap232 but I had to add so much weight ti the Snap232 that it must have came in as heavy or heavier that the WM Extra. I am probably worried about nothing because I don't really recall needing that much more power and if the 160 pulled it ok then the 180 shouls be about the same.

Am I to assume I am the only one in the world with a 180 in a World Models 80"Extra????????????????????????????????
Thanks to the guys that took the time to amswer me. |
World Models 80" Extra
no-one is answering because you qualified your question with this statement.....
:( I need to find someone that has this plane with a Saito 180 on it. :( most guys that are flying this plane already know that this isn't going to work !.....thus....they are not using this combo....if they are not using this combo...how can they comment on how it works... |
World Models 80" Extra
Have just ordered a Fuji 50 so I will let you all know how it goes with that lump on the front.
One of the things I was worried about was would it fit in the cowl, so I fished the cowl out of the box - WOW its big! Will probably have to shorten the box that the motor mounts on though, not to mention the lead I'll have to strap to the back end! Andy E. |
World Models 80" Extra
outsider...so what you are telling me is that a Saito will not fly the plane at all. I do not intend to fly 3D just to fly the plane the way the designer had intended it to fly and if it wont fly on a 1.8 then why did World Models put 1.6 as the engine size.

World Models 80" Extra
Proteus,
I for one do not think that it won't fly with a Saito 180 up front. Saito's are damn good engines and it should fly it fine. The quoted engine size is 1.60ci 2 Stroke Glow, so the Saito 180 may be down a little bit on power but should still be fly the majority of maneuvers. The only thing you may suffer with is power to pull out of the hover Andy E. |
World Models 80" Extra
I too think the Saito 180 will fly the WM 80" Extra just fine. These days, the buzz words are "unlimited verticals". It seems that if a planes doesn't pull out of hover at 1/2 throttle, it ain't worth didley. That is just not true.
If you don't care to 3D or compete in freestyle, there is nothing wrong with this combo. About the only problem you might encounter is balancing the model properly with such a lightweight engine up front. |
GOEKELI?
I'M JUST GETTING THE SAME COMBO READY TO FINISH. WERE THERE ANY MODIFICATIONS YOU HAD TO MAKE TO THE FIREWALL? ALSO, WHAT MUFFLER DID YOU USE. I'M PLANNING ON A BISSON PITTS STYLE, BUT DON'T WANT TO MODIFY IF POSSIBLE

World Models 80" Extra
I built the firewall as per instructions because it is more than strong enough. I am using the stock muffler witht the engine mounted horizontal which made using the stock muffler impossible unless I made a large relief in th bottom of the fire wall which I did. The muffler did not protude beyond the bottom of the cowl so I am going to have to come up with some extention or use a different muffler but money is tight right now so I will have to make do with the homemade extention.
I called Horizon and they said as long as I am not looking for outlandish 3D stuff the Saito on 30% fuel with a 16/8 the plane will fly just fine. They had the same motor on a 13.5 lb Ultra Stick and on the fuel and prop set up it would pull away from a hover. I plane on flying mine this weekend so I will let you know how it comes out. |
World Models 80" Extra
:) I have a ZDZ 50 on my WM Extra. I originally had a Brisson 2.4 on it. The 2.4 flew the plane well. It would pull out of a hover, but barley. Vertical was not unlimited, although it was way up there.
The Saito 180 has a little less power than the Brisson 2.4 . I was swinging a Bolly 18 X 8 at 7200 rpm's . WM says not to use more than a 160 2 stroke. Most people that have tried this set up have been disappointed. The average weight people are getting is about 15lbs. Mine is 15 1/2 lbs. |
World Models 80" Extra
All dressed up and ready to fly the WM 80" Extra came in at a surprising 13.5 lbz with a Saito 180 and no lead. That comes out to a 25 oz. wing loading...not bad for this type plane. I did have to put the 200mah 4 cell pack in the tank/engine box...no bog deal. With a little luck I will see how it does in the air...I am not expecting stellar performance gppd clean aerobatics.

Best of luck for the big event!

Thanks MF99...oh and it was a 2000mah pack..not a 200mah pack...my booboo

World Models 80" Extra
Just received the my Fuji50 - looks like a beauty.
This is my first Petrol engine, (I think you call it a gasser), so there are still some things I have to get before I start installation. Because of the weight issue with the engine, I am probably going to use 2 battery packs. 4 cell for the Rx, and 5 cells for the servos with an opto-isolator - might as well make any ballast useful Andy E |
World Models 80" Extra
I'm thinking of using the BME 50 in the WM Extra 80". Would most any muffler fit okay? I'm wanting to keep the weight down. What are your opinions. Is this overkill for now if I never get into 3D.

Saito180
All my doubts were wrong about having enough power to fly the WM Extra, as a matter of fact it is plenty of power. It will go vertical doing rolls for as high as I care to watch it...it is not unlimited but I knew that going in. I got comfortable real fast with this plane because it is just a damn good fun to fly plane with not one bad habit. It does the most wicked inverted flat spin you ever saw and flops into a blender just as fast and as long as you care to do it. I actually lost 3 oz. of nose weight on one of the flights and never knew it , it just tracked as if it was still on the CG. The part I hate the most is that it cost me $4.00 per flight instead of $.40 like you gasser guys but that is not really a bad price to pay for 15 minutes of fun. I did notice it started getting a wee bit touchy on the elevator which is when the weight fell off but I just chalked it up to first flight jitters. The spinner that comes with the plane is polished and looks good and even stayed on the plane so all in all it worked out real good. Oh well I just thought I would let you guys know how it went.

World Models 80" Extra
Could some of you guys fill me in on the flying characteristics of the WM Extra?? I've been flying an Edge 540 (Lanier) and love it but would like to try one of these also. Is it stable on slow flight & landings like the Edge or is it like the "Snap 232"? Had one of those - now after the Edge you couldn't give me another!!! T.I.A.
Keep'm Off The Ground!! Steve |
World Models 80" Extra
:) The WM Extra is a very stable plane and slows down nicely. It does not snap like the 232's. There are some flight differences in the Edge and the Extra. The Edge does better 3D and the Extra does better precision flying. The both can do both really well in the right hands. I have a ZDZ 50 on mine and I really like it.
