GP Patty or H9 80" CAP????!!!!
Im about to ge one or the other. I'm looking at possible a DA-50 or BME 50 for power. I need help in deciding. The patty looks great but I have experience with H9's sport cap .40. Please help me out. The Cap is almost 100.00 more than patty. Why is that? Especially when the cap doesn't come with any hardware. Hmmm. I want a very aerobations airplane that will 3d. Any recommendations will be great as I'm not fixated on any one engine yet.

not aerobations i mean aerobatic! LOL

If you go with the patty, check out the plane in the hobby shop first, assuming you are buying it at a LHS. Check the fuse over real close for any shipping damage and look at the cowl for any small cracks. I have a GP and absolutely love it. With the two engine choices you have listed you will be very satisfied.

For better 3D go with the CAP. It has more wing are which will make it more stable in high alpha. The H9 CAP was optimized for for 3D by Mike McConville.

Patty gets my vote regardless of their flight characteristics. One piece wing and non-removable tail is just not acceptable for aerobats around 80" and up IMHO.

without the two piece wing there is no way!!! The GP is a great airplane.

I don't like the one piece either but I voted for the H9 CAP because the way it flies.

I have never flown a cap, but I have seen several of them fly. In my opinion, in the hands of an experienced pilot there isn't any difference. It comes down to the 2 sides issue, you like a cap or you like an extra. I personally can not stand the look of the cowl cheeks on the CAP nor the turtle deck. To each his own, thats the greatest part about this hobby. We don't fly alike and with the choices available we don't have to fly the same planes.

J. Lo with a Coke or Britney with a Pespi
Either one looks pretty darned good in the back of my truck!
There have been a boat load of threads on both the engine and the plane. And almost as many on the comparison. Now as for looks. I kind of like the J. Lo bubble butt look of the Cap, over the curvatious (Britney) look of the Extra. Why decide at all? Just get both! Fly the heck out of them, and sell the one that you like the least. :D So many girls....uh.. I mean planes, so little time. Scott |

I haven't flow the 80 inch H9 version but I have flow then other one and the PW is better.

The 80 "Cap by H9 flys nicely - and here is the but- but it does build up tailheavy -as does the PW model .
look for 14 lbs or so with any 40-50 cc engine. Caps simply do not respond the same as 300 designs - for a number of reasons - again BUT--- thatis a matter of choice, For a Cap to be very "locked on" the CG needs to be at about 25%of chord -- screw the other comments on aft CG. Move it back and you can expect and get overrotation and wandering . If your idea of good flyings is simply hovering etc-- then shift it aft --- Both are pretty kits - I think the Cap is prettier . Today we setup another one for a friend and with ALL servos forward and a ZDZ50 and Bisson muffler - AND 14 ozs of ballast up front - it flew very well and was not at all nose heavy in any type flying. lots of power - very nice model -with aft cg it was frankly not friendly for a flier who likes very solid feeling models . |
Dick, what did you do to mount the servos forward
Did you move the two elevator servos forward and use a bell crank?
I am very interested in this as I am putting together this model (H9 80" Cap) and would like to do the same thing. Just spent a bunch of time and energy to lighten up the plane and hardware. Only looking for enough forward ballast to shift C.G. for flying IMAC versus 3D. Thanks, Scott |

I disagree with the tail heavy comment. I used 2.1 inch stand offs to make the plane balance. I am using a 39cc engine!

Come on Dick. "Look for 14 lbs" You put in a 50 gasser and 14oz of nose weight and your trying to tell us the cap weighs about 14 lbs?
|
GP Patty or H9 80" CAP????!!!!
I am not telling you what yours will weigh but yeh - in the 14 lb range is doable - as for no ballast and balancing - if you like that setup -- go ahead -

I've seen both fly, by different pilots. The guy flying the Patty was into IMAC, while the guy flying the Cap was into 3D. The Cap w/ the 3D pilot did well in 3D, and the Patty w/ the IMAC pilot did well in IMAC. If I have to analyze, I want to say that the Patty is inherently better for IMAC because it has no rudder coupling (the IMAC guy had no mix, and his knife edge looks straight w/o corrections). The Cap did some harrier and KE spins that I think wouldn't look as good if attempted on the Patty.
If you are worried about price, you should be able to get the Cap for $350 if you look hard enough. Same for Patty. |
GP Patty or H9 80" CAP????!!!!
Cap is excellent IMAC flyer - just do not fly CG aft about 27% MAC
We have tried many 232 Caps - for example starting with the smallest -the SIG-(called the 231EX ) -then the 72" H9 - the 80 " Midwest/ H9 size - the H9 33% and a scratch built 40% one. and a host of scratch built ones they all have the same basic character -if the wingloadings are decent - The largest are the easiest to fly tho - But----The Extra 300L layout is the most commonly flown model in IMAC - a bit boring ---- |
GP Patty or H9 80" CAP????!!!!
I am flying the H9 "80" Cap and I love it. I have the CG in the forward range and it tracks like an arrow. Roll it inverted and it is pretty much hands off. Pull a 45 degree up line and it just keeps going. I am running the following
ZDZ 40 Ignition Module/ Ignition Battery 1650 6v battery mounted on the engine box Dave Brown Spinner MenzS 21x8 5@ JR 8411 (Control Surfaces) 2@ JR 811 (Throttle/Choke) 2@ Fromeco Regulated Reliaswitch 2700mah 6v nickel metal reciever battery Hangar 9 HD Aluminum servo arms Hangar 9 Titanium Pro Links Rocket City control horns/ball links Dubro Pull/Pull Hangar 9 Light wheels Sulivan tailwheel (switched light tailwheel in place of heavy sulivan to get CG) Pilot/Instrument panel I came in at 15.4 lbs Dry I could easily get it in the high 14's with a little effort and a few $$. I could put carbon fiber spinner save approx 1.5 oz. Put carbon fiber main gear with nylon bolts approx 3.5 oz Switch to lithum batteries on ignition and reciever and save 5.5 oz Switch to Dave Brown Light tires save approx 2 oz (Have to deal with flat spots when the plane sits for a while) With all that I would weigh 14.6 and my CG is dead on. To change it all I have to do is move the reciever battery. I could see that if you were building it as a kit you could get it into the 13 lb range without much effort. A good friend this weekend took it up and flew it through the Unlimited IMAC Sequence. He is not a cap lover at all and he was amazed at how well it tracked. He is an extra lover. He flys a 39% Aero-works 330L/ DA 150 and a Compsite Arf 35% 330 with BME. So as I said in another post I have no excuses about flying the intermediate sequence. I cant wait to get the motor fully broken in. I only have approx 2 gal. through it. Im getting 6700. The ZDZ pulls it until I tell it not to. Sorry for the long post. :) |
Good news Fishgod!
That is what I was hoping to hear.
Did you mount all your servos in the standard location? Any chance you might be able to take some pictures? We are pretty close in components BME44 versus ZDZ, and I did go with all the light stuff including aluminum bolts & Screws, LiPoly batteries, and CF spinner & landing gear. I was hoping to be able to make a removable weight tray like a freind of mine did to make the C.G. change from IMAC to 3D. It works very well on his FC 2.6. I've still got to do the Pull-Pull wires, mount the ignition, tank, reciever, batteries and switches then finish cutting the cowl. Still shooting for end of June completion date. I might be able to get some pics up by the end of the week. |

If I can con my wife to bring her digital camera home from the studio I will get some pics for you.

Cool! thank you very much
BTW: I read the other thread and see you have the battery by the throttle servo. That should be great! Gives you plenty of room for moving it around.
I saw another big IMAC plane that had two areas of velcro. One near the front of the cockpit and the other near the rear. He would move his battery packs back for doing 3D. Like Dick H. said that seems to be the trick. Locks it in for IMAC and then you can move the C.G. back for the silly stuff :) I figure if it ends up tail heavy I can always run a tuned muffler. Scott |

I've seen 3 Patties so far, the 3rd being the one I am finishing now. Look yours over real good. Mine had alot of hangar rash out of the box. The covering job was pretty bad. The mono had very bad wrinkles and it was pretty much shrunk out. It took all I had with a mitt and heat gun to get it to look good. The others didn't have this problem. Beware! If it looks really wrinkled in the box pass on it.
